  • I once was lost, but now am Found(ry)

I once was lost, but now am Found(ry). This statement technically makes no sense, but I liked the way it sounded so I decided to use it as the name for the Backblast. With that being said, here’s how things went down:

    WarmUp:

    • Jog to Noma, then we did:
    • Side straddle hops – 15 in cadence
    • Mountain climbers – 15 in cadence
    • Concrete Grabbers – 15 in cadence
    • Windmills – 15 in cadence
    • Self love

    The Thang:

    • Jog to Peristyle, then we did:
    • Merkins – 30 in cadence
    • LBC’s – 30 in cadence
    • Low slow squats – 30 in cadence
    • Calf raises – 30 in cadence
    • Dips – 30 in cadence
    • Jog back to flag, then we did:
    • Rocky Balboas – 30 in cadence
    • Plankjacks – 30 in cadence
    • Floyd Mayweathers – 30 in cadence
    • Burpees – 10 on your own

After that, we did some static stretching, count-off, name-o-rama, announcements & intentions. Thanks for the opportunity to lead, fellas. I always enjoy it!

  • The Morning After

15 pax showed up in the gloom, possibly still a bit hung over from a few too many brewskies watching the SB or maybe from the ongoing boycott party with the Who Dat’s one call away from making a run into the big game, again!  Regardless with the disclaimer made it’s time to work….

We headed out the gate for a quick mosey around the track switching to a Bernie Sanders trot midway around with a bit of bewilderment until it was understood all were supposed to participate.  Then out the gate to the field circling up for a warm up.

    All in cadence x 12 or 20 or 10:

    Squats

SS Hops  x 10 then after seeing the pax was a bit lethargic, QIC decided to entice focus with a Fracsac special, finish as a group on a silent count or punish work to follow – thanks in part to a “silent whisper of Marlin” the pax got into cadence focus and all stopped on 17

    Grass grabbers

Peter Parker ( Hokie reminded QIC and FNG was in our midst and Rudy let everyone know he likes to pretend he really is climbing a wall)

    Scorpion kicks

    Arm Circles

    Grab a rock!

After moseying over to the tree line instructions were given for our 1st task at hand:

    The 7

Start with 1 front raise (mid waist raise your rock over your head) Then lower rock holding out front run to the center of the field.

Each time PAX gets to this center point perform 5 squat presses

Now run with Rock over head to the other side – complete 6 man makers – run back to the center with rock overhead at the center 5 squat presses then run back to the beginning side with rock out front.

Continue this back and forth effort with numbers flip flopping  exercises and 5 squat presses in the middle until 1 becomes 6 and 6 becomes 1.

Now for the early finishers line up behind the starting point – SSH in cadence until 6 was in.

Grab your rock and mosey to the parking lot – get a partner.

Line up for some chess press to tricep over head press – 200 to 200

PAX does chess press while PAX 2 walks post to post performs over head tricep presses – upon return flip flop until 200 of each are completed.

Now for the early finishers line up behind the starting point – SSH in cadence until 6 was in.

Return to you rock – for some Mary

    American Hammer x 12

Gas Pumps with Rock in an upward press position x 12

    Bus Drivers x 12

    Front rock lifts x 10

    Time to return our rocks

Mosey back to the flag – Rudy reminded me he want his full 45 minutes so with 2 minutes left we completed a ring of fire with a 10 merkin count off.

    Count off and COT

Our FNG was welcomed and given is F3 name – Vagabond.

Let us all aspire to inspire before we expire…..  We are all accountable; It’s an honor to lead

  • 1 Year Anniversary

My how time flies. I have been getting up to workout at 5:30 3-4 times a week for 1 whole year. It was a major lifestyle change and I could not be more appreciative for my boy YaMomAnEm getting me out here and off my lazy butt. 16 men joined me at The Foundry for what I hoped would be a fun filled and full body beatdown. Disclaimer was given and off we moseyed to the track.

    Warm Up:

    • SSH x 20 IC
    • Windmills x 10 IC
    • Self love x 15 IC
    • Track grabbers x 15 IC
    • Arm circles x 10 each fwd/rev IC

    Thang #1:

The previous night I, along with multiple members of F3, attended the Lakeview Civic Improvement Association meeting regarding all the crime that has been going on in the city. In honor of this we split into 2 lines and did a Prisoner Indian Run over to the cement cylinders outside of the Children’s Museum. Here is where we spread out to perform Butkus. 1 minute of step ups then a 30 second rest break. 2 rounds for each leg for a total of 4 rounds.

    Thang #2:

Mosey over to The Foundry where we split up into 6 groups of 3 (there was 1 group of 2). 6 stations consisted of:

    • Burpees (the counter)
    • Jump the snake
    • Lunges
    • Mountain climbers
    • Dips
    • Monkey bars

First round completed with 15 burpees. 1 minute rest break. Second round completed with 10 burpees. I opted to use the monkey bars as they were originally intended and each member of their group would swing across the bars back and forth until time was called. My apologies to everyone 6 ft and taller.

    Thang #3:

Mosey back to the warm up spot at the track and sweep the 6. Just enough time to squeeze in The Gross. 12 reps of 12 exercises. Some IC. Some not. Follow the Q’s instructions (looking at you Rudy).

    • Low slow Squats
    • Jumps (don’t let heels touch ground)
    • R side lunges
    • L side lunges
    • Floyd Mayweathers
    • Carolina Dry Docks
    • Diamond merkins
    • Nolia Clap (overhead hand claps)
    • Flutter kicks
    • Hello Dollies
    • Box Cutters
    • Freddy Mercury’s

Mosey back to the flag. May have been 1 minute over but we’ll survive. Count off, name-o-rama, announcements, intentions, and sweaty ball of man.

My thanks again to all the men of F3 for continuing to push me both physically with each beatdown and mentally when trying to construct the beatdowns as Q. It’s been an honor and a pleasure and I can’t wait for the next year.

  • Heisenburg’s Uncertainty = Catfish (Mothership 2020-01-11)

Lovely windy morning on the Mothership with 9 PAX.

Started on the Great Lawn with some windmills, grass grabbers, arm circles, and side straddle hop. On to our faces for Parker Peters, Plank Jacks, and Peter Parkers. Then on to some 8-count bodybuilders to finish the warmup.

Moseyed over to the treeline for 11s with burpees and catalinas. Faster PAX did LBCs and overhead claps while waiting for the six.

Took a quick mosey over to Cafe du Monde and then back to the peristyle. Did a merkin ring of fire (3 rounds), then 10 burpees OYO, then a squat ring of fire (hold al gore b/w squats, 3 rounds), then 10 burpees OYO, then a flutter kick ring of fire (hold legs up b/w kicks, 3 rounds), then 10 burpees.

After this, got some donkey kicks in, then moved to the benches for right leg step-ups, dips, left-leg step ups, incline merkins, then calf raises by the columns.

Another mosey to marconi and back to the peristyle. Finsished up with some 8-counts, then back to flag for COT.

  • Everyone Loves Jailhouse Rock, a Tribute to the King.

Everyone Loves Jailhouse Rock, a Tribute to the King.

In Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935, in a two-room shotgun house in East Tupelo, then a separate municipality that some called the “roughest town in north Mississippi,” Elvis Aaron Presley was born. Times were hard in the U.S., especially in the South, when Elvis Presley entered this world. To be born poor then was not unusual. What was unusual about Elvis at his birth is that he was a twin. His twin brother, Jesse Garon, did not survive, making Elvis what is called today a “twin-less twin.”

    W/U

    • SSH x 35
    • HB x 35
    • IW x 35
    • AC x 18, Reverse x 17

    The Thang

    Don’t Be Cruel

    • Burp & Merk to 10 Merkins

    All Shook Up

    • Sit on your “throne” like Elvis and in COT style state your Hospital Name, F3 Name, & Favorite Elvis Song.   Hold until the end of the COT. (Jailhouse Rock is the clear favorite among F3 PAX. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that it was the first song mentioned).

We Can’t’ Go on Together with Suspicious Minds

    • Lunge Indian Run from track to road, then Indian Run to NOMA

Find your twin Jesse Garon Presley for Dora 1-2-3

    • 100 Merkins
    • 200 Squats
    • 300 LBCs

Indian Run back to the Flag.

Counterama, Namerama, COT.  Happy Birthday Elvis!

Thank you for the opportunity to Lead, Thank you very much,

    Da Parish

  • 2019 Rock City Review

Conditions:  A cool 50 degrees and clear.  Dark.

For our last 2019 Rock City we looked back on the year that was.

    Warm-up

We hit the most popular RC warm-up exercises of 2019 according to those that write backblasts:

    • SSH x 19 – Still the popular starter.  We did 19 for the year 2019.
    • Hillbillies x 20 – A surprising replacement of the customary IWs.  Hillbillies seem wildly popular at RC.  We did 20 because I forgot to stop at 19
    • Grass Grabbers x 19 – I’m sure the popularity is based on the name.  The clap at the end feels silly, but it doesn’t keep us from doing them.
    •  Windmills (aka Abe Vigodas) x 10 – Lots of Qs find these to be a warm-up staple, but you will have to do them prior to 5:30 anytime Spartacus is on the schedule.

    A Sea of Crimson

Our first Rock City Workout of 2019 happened on July 7th.  That just happened to be the day of the College Football National Championship.  War Eagle must have been feeling good that morning as he delivered a brutal beatdown, on par with the beating his Crimson Tide took later that night.

We paired up for a quasi-dora with the following exercises:

    • 250 curls
    • 200 squats
    • 150 rows
    • 100 shoulder presses
    • 50 burpees

While pax #1 did the exercise, pax #2 ran 40 yards and back.

    Iron Pax

This morning we paid tribute to the Iron Pax workouts of 2019 by reenacting Week Zero.  This time we did one round instead of six and we did the reps together.

    • 24 squats
    • 24 merkins
    • 24 Lunges in cadence
    • 400 meter run

    Sgt. Bovia Tribute

We saved my favorite Rock City Workout of the year for last.  It was the tribute Boo-Boo Qd for Marine Sgt. Joey Bovia.  Sgt. Bovia was killed in Afghanistan on August 31, 2010.  The Tribute consisted of 31 reps of 8 different exercises.  This morning, we did as many as we could in the allotted time.

    • 31 merkins
    • 31 Big Boy Sit-ups
    • 31 Squats
    • 31 Push Presses

Time ran out before the 31 burpees.  We brought our rocks back to the pile and moseyed to the flag for the COT.

    NMM

    • Smallest numbers at Rock City all year.
    • The 5 guys that posted were there to work though.  We made it through a lot more than I thought we would.  I honestly expected that I would have to cut the Iron Pax or Bovia workout, but that was not the case.
    • Looking back on the National Championship themed workout that started the year, who would have thought that LSU would be playing those same Clemson Tigers for the Natty after the 2019 season. And who could have forecast the Alabama program falling off the face of the earth like they did.  I don’t even think they made a bowl game this year.  Seems like the end of an era.
  • J

praise the Lord it wasn’t raining!!!

Was gonna skip this one due to the cold front but then briefs reminded me the night before that I was q ing. Yikes

warm up: ssh, self love, windmills, mosey to the track with high knees, butt kicks, karaoke.

we used half the track as an out and back. This way everyone could run at their own pace yet still do the exercises “together”. When the first member made 100m, they did ten Merkins, everyone else would stop where they were and also do ten Merkins, this happened at 200m also, at which point we turned around and ran back. I scepter whenever the first person gets back to the 100m mark, we all do 10 Merkins together. Run back to starting point, plank and wait for the 6. The fast runners would catch the slow runners on the way back. Once the 6 arrives, Merkins in cadence.
the next round followed the same format except with squats. Round three was burpees.
next we took a jog around the track to catch our breath and did it in reverse order. This time only doing 5 of each exercise at each stop. Finished off with some rock climbers, hillbilly’s, imperial walkers, stretches and a mosey back to the flag.

There was a record prayer request/answered prayer session. So many praises and still so many needs. Guidance for our children/youth, Fathers/in laws with cardiac issues and upcoming cath, basketball head injury, the coach recovering from major surgery, prostate cancer recovery, The spine tumor that ended up benign benign, challenges in business, Bongo’s dad, special intentions. We better get to praying!

glad y’all all came out and let me be a part of your morning! Please let screwtop know I signed him up for New Years morning (2020, 2021, and 2022)

Sweaty, breathless men balled up and closed out.

  • No really – Stop me if you’ve done this before

YHC’s 4th year anniversary in F3, so what to do? Why – how about the same thing that he did for 3rd year, 2nd year and 1st year? The Q that writes itself…

YHC was joined on a gloomy, chilly Monday morning at Rock City by 13 PAX. Several had been there for previous celebrations. And one made his first ever appearance at the 4th celebration of his Fart Sacking of my first workout. Welcome, Amnesty! Conversely, thank you Bogey – not only did you drag me into this, you’ve actually been at the anniversary each year (as far as I recall, anyways…)

    The Thing

Same thing again. Quick warmup before grabbing rocks and heading to the trees.

    Captain Dan

With your rock, 2x Lunge, 1x Squat. Repeat, increasing reps each time. Get to the fence at the end of the field. YHC was up to 14x Lunge steps. Scantron and his legs seemed to make it in about 6x Lunge steps.

Take a seat in the People’s Chair while we patiently wait for Triple Shift to arrive. Then we patiently continue sitting waiting for Triple Shift to realize that he is also supposed to take a seat.

    Jack Webb

1x Merkin (hand on rock), 2x Shoulder Presses (with Rock). Start increasing. Up to 8x/16x. PAX humored YHC by following his slower-than-you cadence. But everyone powered through…

Circle of Abs and Pull Ups

Circle up for some ab work. While one group of 3-4 ran off to the playground to get 10 Pull Ups in, the rest of the group did some ab work. Box cutters, Flutters, Dollys and Penguins while everyone got their pull ups. Marlin gave a 20 count in his head. The rest of us waited in silence.

Start heading towards home by Lieutenent Danning back to where we started.

    Bloom Where You’re Planted

Lets run through some reps without putting the rock down. Shoulder Press, Curl, Row. x12, x10, x8, x6, x4, x2. YHC did need to take a break.

Back to the Flag, still had time for 10 Burpees OYO. PAX – we are getting faster. Previous years, we’ve not had time for EXTRA work at the end.

Thanks for a great 4 years!

  • 5 Card Studs

    Conditions:  Dry, 48 degrees

    Warm-up:  Jog to the Rock Pile; SSH x 20; Peter Parkers x 20; Low Slow Squats x 20; Parker Peters x 20; Windmills x 10; Dying Cockroaches x 20; Arm Circles x 20; 8-count Body Builders x 12

    The Thang:

Grab a Rock and Circle Up for a progression of Shoulder Presses, Curls, Rows, and Squats.  10 reps the first round, straight into 8 reps the 2nd round, then 6, 4, and 2.  No breaks to put down the rock.

Take your rocks to the track for some Poker.

Prior to the workout, the Bogé helped me strategically place a bench roughly 30 yards from the end line.  We divided up into 4 teams of 3.  One man bear crawled to the bench, retrieved a playing card from the deck and jogged back to his team, this continued until each team had a hand of 5 cards.  While one team member was bear crawling to get the next card, the other two team members performed 20 perfect merkins and planked.

5 Card Stud-ish – Each team was allowed to discard one card and draw again.  That way everyone got to bear crawl twice.  Each team could fold or play.  The penalty for folding was 10 burpees.  The penalty for playing and losing was 15 burpees.  Tua, Hand Grenada, and Scantron won the first hand with three of a kind (Jokers wild).  They shuffled the deck while the rest of us did burpees.

5 Card Draw – Hand is dealt with bear crawls again.  This time rock chest presses in lieu of merkins.  As many as you can until the bear returns.  Each team was allowed to discard as many cards as they like, with a penalty of 5 eight count body builders for each discard.  Each team member ran to the bench, discarded, paid the penalty, drew to a full hand and ran back.  Same penalties for folding and losing.  Rudy, Tanner, and the Undertaker won with a straight.

Grab the rocks and head back to the rock pile and on to the flag for COT.

    NMM

    • Not sure that Marlin checked the weather.  He looked underdressed for temps in the 40s.  Looked like he had no more than 3 layers on.
    • Scantron made up for Marlin’s lack of clothing.
    • Kenna Brah was appropriately shamed for being late, but Marlin not so much.
    • I was 100% positive that Hand Grenada, Tua, and Scantron were going to stack the deck after their first victory.  I was ashamed of myself after seeing how bad their second hand was.
    • I blame my mistrust of Hand Grenada on my raising.  Being from Arkansas, you develop a superiority complex and automatically think you’ve been cheated if someone from Mississippi beats you.  The fact that we are 49th in every meaningful ranking is ingrained in us from an early age and celebrated at every opportunity.  Hopefully time spent with Hand Grenada will chip away at this deep rooted prejudice.
    • If you enjoyed the Round of Poker, go to the Mothership on Saturday.  It’s likely Rudy will steal my idea.
