  • Inaugural Lakefront Rugby Sevens – from Brexit

12 HIMs graciously posted for my Virgin-Q in full knowledge that it would likely be an absolute shambles. I had to do something British-themed for my first ever Q so, with it being the day of the London Sevens which is an annual rugby sevens tournament, I decided to do a Rugby Sevens inspired workout. You may not know it, but the US is part of the World Rugby Sevens and they’re sometimes pretty good at it (although sitting at 9th in the standings right now). Sevens is a much more simplified version of rugby, which is probably why the US is better at it than normal rugby, played with seven players instead of the full 15. Thought that by focusing on sevens it could be a good intro to the game.

    Warmup:
Side straddle hops, arm circles, grass grabbers, toe touches, imperial walkers, peter parkers, merkins (only messed up the cadence once)

Got into pairs and moseyed to the shaft passing the rugby ball between each other. The Rugby ball can only go backwards so each player had to sprint ahead to pass the ball backwards to his teammate. You could not move if you didn’t have the ball. Any dropped passes meant 5 burpees which is the number of points you get for a touchdown in rugby, aka, a try.

7 burpees on our own at the gazebo after regrouping. Continued the passing drill to the shaft with the addition that the person without the ball had to do a single burpee while the person with the ball moved ahead of him. It appeared that I had over-estimated the hand-eye coordination of the group (to be fair, some of the pairs were geared up more than others…only so many rugby balls in circulation here so some were forced to use toy footballs that got completely taken with the wind with each pass…) and so was running a little behind schedule but we made up for this for a quicker than expected Sevens (staying on theme) – derkins and sister Mary Catherines. Bear crawl one way, run back.

Moseyed to the rugby pitch, no passing this time.

Get into teams and then did a passing along the line drill. A dropped pass was 7 burpees for the team (this was changed to 5 burpees for the team that YHC joined in with). The other team did merkins/squat jumps in the meantime (merkins on way up, squat jumps on way back).

YHC gave his best attempt at explaining the rules of touch rugby in about 3 minutes and then game-on – 15 min (7 min halves).

Skins v Shirts with Shirts kicking us off. Good formation to start with but it seemed like some of the players got confused with the fact that you are actually allowed to run forwards, you only have to pass it backwards…not too much territory made in the opening play. The Skins got the first try after a good line break (apologies, can’t remember which HIM scored first as I left it a week before I wrote this), but the Shirts re-grouped and came back strong to score two tries in quick succession. After a high-risk move to intercept the ball by the Skins didn’t pay off (if you don’t catch an interception and fumble it, it means a possession turnover), the Shirts were in a commanding position. In the closing minutes of the game, the Skins had their backs against the wall in defense but held firm to win a turnover deep in their own territory. From this position, Zoolander scored a highly controversial try to level the game in the final seconds. The try was awarded against a fierce appeal from the Shirts about a forward pass…this decision was in no way affected by the fact that the impartial ref had jumped into the game a few minutes beforehand and had started playing on the side of the Skins.
Throughout the game, there was some obvious flouting of the offside rule and a little bit of confusion on the number of touches before a turnover, which wasn’t helped by a very forgetful ref, however we had some great runners of the ball on both sides and, all in all, was very impressed with the ability of the HIMs to pick up the concept of the game very quickly. Obviously a testament to the Q. It was great way to get some good cardio in while having some fun. Next time we’ll be introducing scrums…

After a few reminders about time running out, we moseyed back, no passing the ball. No time for any core.

Announcements – Spartan Beast, T-shirt ordering and Bogue Chitto trail run on June 15.

COT – Russo closed us out with a special prayer for Grundy and his soon-to-be new addition to his family.

  • Til the Medicine Takes – from Akbar

Mid day text from Whacker alerted YHC that rain was in the forecast. Even when there is an 80% chance of rain, there is an 80% chance that it won’t rain. Last minute change to the Marsh was necessary. We finished the original workout in 30 minutes, which is the average time it takes a medicine to start working. Good thing YHC has done this before, we filled the time quite nicely – with only 1 moment of thought blockage.

  • Nashville Nasty – from Akbar

17 showed up today to a warm 61 degrees, the first real sweat in the past few months (except for Russo). Tiga showed up from a recent beatdown in Austin where he was named, jumping right into the fold like he’d been here a year. A surprise comeback from Captain Sparkles was a pleasant surprise.

4 came jogging up from the pre-thang and we were ready to go.

    Warm up:

SSH, Arm Circles, Self Love, Imperial Walkers, Grass Grabbers, High Knees

Grab blocks from the truck and rifle carry to the fire hydrant for 8 ct Rocky Balboas x10 IC, and jawbreakers (alternating Merkins on the block) x 10 OYO.

Run stairs at Rips, 10 calf raises at the top, return to the blocks.

Raffle Carry to Noah’s Ark for the Nashville Nasty

YHC was on a business trip and decided to attend a beatdown in 20° weather with snow on the ground in Nashville. It was cold, but warmed up quickly due to the ascending reps beatdown. It was love at first sight.

    The Nashville Nasty

6 exercises, 10 reps each, run Noah’s Ark = 1 round. Increase 1 rep each round.

Lots of Mumblechatter which lessened the pain.

Grundy was out of the gate first as usual, and we all endured the pain for around 30 minutes. YHC’s unofficial count for most was up to 7-8 rounds, equaling over 500 reps.

Head back to the flag with a Rifle carry to the fire hydrant, for 2 exercises x10 IC. Maybe Mountain Climbers and Rosalitas, but not quite sure.

Put up blocks and circle up for Mary x10 IC

Hello Dolly, Rosalita, Dying Cockroaches, Penguins, Heals to Heaven, Nolan Ryan’s, Jane Fonda’s, 8 count Merkin mountain climbers.

Count, Name, and Waterpik prayed us out.

Coffeeteria at Book and the Bean was well attended, with Steve joining us after his run. Grundy brought cookies for all.

  • Grant’s Tomb – from Akbar

45ish and wet as all get out, a slight modification was needed for this gloom. YHC can handle wet or cold, but not both. So instead of sloshing at the Shaft, we headed to Noah’s Ark for Grant’s Tomb. Ulysses S. Grant’s mug adorns our $50 bill, so we moseyed around doing 50 reps with moseys in between – 25 reps on one side, 25 reps on the other.

Warm Up: SSH, Grass Grabbers, Toe Touches, Mummy Kicks, Self-Love, Arm Circles, High Knees, Butt Kicks x 15IC

    Thang

Noah’s Ark – 25 reps at the wall, mosey/run @ 50 yards, 25 reps on the other side.

George Thorogood’s, Bear Crawl/run, Tuck Jumps
    Freak Nasty, run, Superman
Renegade Row, Crab Walk/run, Donkey Kicks
    Stone Mountain, run, Merkins
Step Ups, High Knees/run, Shoulder Claps
    Dirkins, Karaoke, Good Mornings
    Irkin, Karaoke, Apollo Ohno

Rips – 25 reps on the sidewalk, run across the street and up the stairs, 15 calf raises at the top, descend stairs and run back to the sidewalk for another 25 reps

    Flutter Kick, Mountain Climbers
    Leg Raises, J Lo’s
    Crunchy Frogs, Jane Fonda’s

At this point, Jose10k mentioned that YHC would never remember all of this, which is partially correct. Especially when the mumblechatter moved to math and quadrilateral mumbo jumbo.

We may have finished with Parker Peters and something else and moseyed back to the flag for 15 Merkins IC.

Count, Name, and Shooter prayed us out.

  • December Flickerball on the Northshore – from TruCoat

The third installment of Flicker ball on the North Shore’s lakefront pitch was a battle to the end. After a short warmup of core exercises and a push-up medley that included gorillas and spidermans, the group divided into two teams of 8 based on age. Once again the Juniors versus the Seniors went back and forth on a long field, showcasing soccer skills tuned over time, and surely depleting Pontchartrain of the local O2 source. The score ping ponged as the Seniors captured an early lead, the Juniors made a mid-game run that the Seniors rallied to close. Zoolander’s fancy footwork drew taunts by the Seniors and Bushwacker’s vigorous defense may have worn down the Seniors. With the game tied, a two-minute warning was announced that shot adrenaline in the likes of Cowbell, Baby Yoda and Bird whose coordinated pressure resulted in successive goals and the first-ever victory by the Juniors. Some 2-point scoring highlights included Barely Legal’s Messi like magical kick, SOGO’s dominating left-footed end-to-end run, and Bird’s curving shot from unfathomable distance. The pitch welcomed back to the area Burgundy from Houston and Popeye from Huntsville, and the group welcomed first-timers and Dukes of Hazzard’s relatives Fieri (8th grade) and Craggle (4th grade).

  • It’s A (Merkin) Trap! – from Akbar

9 men showed up to get better this dark gloom for the annual Merkin Trap. It was so dark YHC was worried about seeing the Wiki if needed. But this has been done before, and besides making some cadence mistakes, went well with no Wiki needed.

The thang went like this. Most exercises were done in cadence x12, x8, x5 – with one exercise followed by some form of Merkin. Total of 50 reps IC or 25 OYO. We moseyed around from the Flag to the Playground stopping along the way for:
