  • Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

Six brave patriots gathered at Valley Forge (a gloomy Audubon Park) and braced themselves for the impending clash with the Redcoats (Beat Down) . First came the Declaration of Independence (Disclaimer) and we were off across the Delaware (through the Bag Drop and over to the Bandstand). The Battle of Bunker Hill (Warm Up) played out as follows:

    • SSH x 25
    • IW x twenty-something
    • Seal Jacks x twenty-something
    • Bulgarian Ball Busters x 20

Somewhat fatigued, yet eager to prove themselves the Continental Army (PAX) then faced the Battle of Saratoga (Oak Alley):

    • 11’s (from bollards to last lamp post)
      • Manmakers
      • LBT’s

In hindsight this should’ve been 13’s, one for each Colony. Nevertheless, on to Lexington and Concord (grass by the picnic table pavilion)!

    • Lexington (Tammy Wynette to 60)
    • Concord (Mary)
      • WWI Sit-Ups x 20
      • ABC’s
      • Reverse Crunches x 20
      • Catalina Wine Mixer x 10

Back to the flag for the Treaty of Paris (COT).

Thanks for the opportunity to George Washington (Q), and no taxation without representation (SYITG)!

  • Big Papi’s 45-Minute NOLA Tour

YHC was expecting rainy and flooded conditions but was pleasantly surprised to find the gloom just a little damp but otherwise pleasant.  Better surprise was having a Pax of 14 strong despite the rain, including Big Papi from Charlotte.  With our honored guest present, YHC felt obliged to give a little tour of our fair city, starting with a brisk mosey over to:

Audubon Park Golf Course (monkey bars):

    Split into four stations:

    • Burpees x7 (timer)
    • Russian twists
    • Pull ups
    • Mountain climber

Rinse and repeat.  Unfortunately, we lost Seaman in the middle of this because YHC neglected to provide him directions to our next stop.

A quieter (but far less jolly) Pax proceeded with an Indian Run over to the Fly to see:

    Mississippi River:

Ring of fire:  circle up, bear crawl to the right, halt, 10 merks wave-style, bear crawl to the left, halt, 10 diamond merks wave-style, bear crawl to the right, halt, 10 wide merks wave-style

Shake it out then mosey over the levee to:

    Audubon Zoo:

Here we did “8s” (variation on 11s), starting with 1 jump lunge at the bottom of the levee and 7 burpees at the top.  Note to self: this combo is brutal — stop doing this.

Indian run to the end of the Fly and line up head-to-toe in elbow plank position for moguls.  Each Pax member jumped over the legs of the remaining Pax, who were doing plank walks while waiting their turn.  We did this twice and then resumed our Indian run to:

    The Labyrinth (or thereabouts):

Obviously no trip to New Orleans is complete without visiting the cherished labyrinth.  Unfortunately, it was occupied and we had to circle up nearby for some quick Mary:

    • LBC x30
    • Real Freddie Mercs x20

Mosey back to the flag and re-join Seaman, who was in good spirits despite being abandoned by the Pax.

COT: count, name-o-rama, shout outs, and prayer.

  • Around the Fly – Post Jazz Fest Week 1 Edition

After attending Jazz Fest all day Saturday, and doing night shows Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights, this morning was rough.  As was the discovery at around 5pm yesterday that I was Qing this morning.  Nonetheless, duty calls.  I tried to keep us dry since it poured for several hours yesterday.

    THE THANG

First we ran to the parking lot front of the Zoo for…

    Warm Up

    20 x SSH
    20 x Imperial Walkers
    20 x Merkins
15 x Arm Circles in each direction
… then we moseyed up to the platform thing (what is this thing called) about midway around the Fly…

And did a Jack Webb, followed by a few more arm circles
… then we moseyed to the Labyrinth…

And did a potluck Mary, ending w/10 more Merkins
…then we moseyed back to the flag…

And finished w/a ring of fire and COT.

See y’all at the Fairgrounds Thursday.

  • Same as Wednesday except it’s backwards

  • The least amount of burpee’s while still doing burpee!

It was a beautiful spring morning.  The weather was perfect (unlike last Monday).  The PAX started to trickle in at around 5:20 with the usual couple of late stragglers speeding into the parking lot!  A couple of new guys were EH’d by Roots (who decided not to show up) and Landing Strip.  To keep with the theme of “Bringing the skinny back to the skinny”, I had planned a pretty tough, run heavy workout around the park.  I was a bit nervous for the new guys whether they would be able to keep up but decided to stick with the plan.

We started with a mosey around parking lot to Oak Alley.

    Circle up
1 BURPEE (I think this is a record!)
    SSH x25
    IMPERIAL WALKER x25
    PETER PARKER x25
    PARKER PETER x25
Alternate high knees/butt kicks to the end of Oak Alley then jog to the row bars

    Split up into 4 groups
    LEFT HIP DIPS
    RIGHT HIP DIPS
    ROWS
    MERKINS (count 25)

    Every other running man
JOG x 2/SPRINT x 1 to the spot across from the bridge

Inspired by Bartman’s “More Jack Webbs”  workout and also inspired by the one comment to his backblast from: I believe someone from The Metairie, we did 11 JACK WEBBS!  And now we all know why you stop at 10!

Next was every other running man
JOG x1/SPRINT x1/PRISONER RUN X1 to the fountain

    RIGHT LEG STEP UP x15
    INCLINE MERKIN x15
    LEFT LEG STEP UP x15
    DIPS x15

    Every other running man
INDIAN RUN to the 17th hole for some quick MARY

    RUSSIAN TWIST X15
    LBC X15
    FREDDIE MERCURY X15
    V UP’S X15
    DYING COCKROACH X15

INDIAN RUN TO THE PULL UP BARS while waiting for the PAX we did:

    PLANK
RIGHT ARM UP IN THE AIR
LEFT ARM UP IN THE AIR
    MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

JOG x1/SPRINT X1 to the flag

Plank and wait for the 6.

Finished with the count.  (Elwire and G spot had to dip out early)

Namorama.  Welcome two new FNG’s, SHANK and LEMON HEAD, or if you prefer LEMON HEAD MFer!  Prayed a prayer of thankfulness for God giving us the strength to wake up every morning and carry the weight that He designed us to carry.  Thankful for the opportunity to lead!  Until next time…Amen!

  • Classic Skinny

Inspired by Roots’ recent proclamation that he was “bringing running back to the Skinny,” YHC decided to treat the Pax to some speed work around the park loop.  We started with a short warmup jog to oak alley, where we alternated between high knees and butt kicks at each lamppost and eventually made our way to the jogging path.  There, we did fartleks using the stickmen painted on the ground as markers.  For the first stretch, we jogged for two men and sprinted one, repeating until we reached the monkey bars.

At the monkey bars, split into 4 groups:

    • Burpees x10 (timer)
    • Pull ups
    • Plank jacks
    • Russian Twists

Rinse, repeat, then resume fartlek, but this time jog 2 / sprint 2 until arriving at the usual Mary spot near the 17th hole tee box.   We got in plank position and did Jack Webbs starting with 1 merkin /2 air presses and increased in increments of 1 merkin / 2 air presses until reaching 10 merkins / 20 air presses.  After completing this, there was some confusing mumblechatter about “more.”   It made a lot more sense after YHC finally got around to reading Friday’s backblast and learned that #JackWebb is apparently trending among Skinny Uptowners.

Continue around the loop (jog 2 / sprint 2) until reaching the benches at the fountain.  At the benches:

    • Bulgarian split lunge (R) x15
    • Bulgarian split lunge (L) x15
    • Dips x20
    • Decline Peter Parker x20

    (all in cadence)

Resume 2/2 fartlek and arrive at clearing near Prytania for Plankorama, which went something like this: plank, merkin x10 (in cadence), side plank right, arm under x10 (in cadence), elbow plank, side plank left, arm under x10 (in cadence), plank, elbow plank.

We wrapped up with an Indian Run to the flag and then concluded with the count, name-o-rama, announcements (GrowRuck – June 10) , and prayer.  During the COT, RY was frantically adding folks to the Q list so make sure you check for your names.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

    -Mulligan

  • Too Tired for The Skinny

YHC drove all the way uptown this morning, excited to welcome an FNG to the fold with a classic Yankee workout.  Alas, as the time drew near, El Wire announced that Yankee was unable to attend – some lame excuse about being “too tired”.  A Saturday Tough Mudder, a Sunday 8k, but unable to follow it up with a Monday Q?  I guess that’s what The Skinny is all about.

El Wire boldly stepped forward to lead us.  Mosey to Oak Alley for warm up

COP 1: SSH x20, MC x20, IW x20, PJ x20, and a few others thrown in.  TClaps to the PAX stepping up to call out the next rounds of exercises.

COP 2: Partner up for Suicides.  PAX 1 does the 4-lightpost suicide.  PAX 2 alternates between exercises.  Flapjack

    • Round 1: 20 Flutter Kicks, 10 Muricans
    • Round 2: 20 Shoulder Taps, 10 Squats

COP 3: Indian Run to the Row Bars

NOTE: YHC is familiar with the Indian Run as a bit of a mosey pace, allowing the PAX in the rear to actually reach the front when sprinting.  Apparently at The Skinny, it’s more of an Indian Sprint: a pace that seems geared to prevent the PAX in the rear from EVER reaching the front.

    4 groups.

    • Group 1: Burpees x10 (Timer)
    • Group 2: Lunges
    • Group 3: Squats
    • Group 4: Rows

    Repeat

COP 4: Mosey to the Bandstand for a Ring of Fire.  Plank Up.  Start the ‘Murican wave with 1.  Then 2.  Then 3, 4 and 5.  Then slide to the center for high five, slide back to starting point.  Side bear crawl clockwise till return to starting point.  Then slide back to the middle for one last high five.  YHCs shoulders crying for mercy.

COP 5: PAX Mary.  Around the group, everyone calls an exercise each IC x10.  12 exercises, the specifics escape YHC.  Flutters, LBCs, BB, Box Cutters, etc….

COP 6: 3 minutes left, so Nip/Tuck leads a sprint to the benches for a round of Dips, Step Ups, Incline Muricans and Decline Muricans.

Mosey back to the VSF for Countoff (finished with 10, lost 1 to hopefully minor back pull and 1 to time constraint), Name-o-rama, and prayers.  2 FNGs named: Hasselhoff and Madoff.

YHC thanks the Uptowners for allowing me to join the fun.  Thanks El Wire for the short-notice Q!

  • Welcome Back Gloom

Perhaps Q Karma folows the Pax but I found it painfully ironic that on the Monday following a return of (or is expiration of) daylight savings time that I had the Q.  Mondays are my favorite day to fartsack but duty called.  The mid-workout sunrises that had been greeting us recently were certainly not going to be seen and the gloom was back in full force.  The original plan for the post was a run around the park and fly but upon seeing the faces of my assembled Pax I realized I wasn’t the only one dragging today and I audibled to a park lap only.

    Warm-up:

Mosey to the band stand for a high and dry warm up.

    • SSH x 30
    • IW Squats x 20
    • Monkey Humpers x 20

Mosey to the track and then single file for Indian Run to row bars.  Form three groups and rotate.

    • Rows
    • Burpees x 10 for the count
    • Lunges

Indian Run to a clearing for some shoulder work/ ring of fire.  Bring the circle in, bring it back out, 180 to the right, 10 Merkins, 180 to the left, bring the circle in.

Indian Run to benches at the head of the park:

    • Left leg power ups x 20
    • Dips x 20
    • Right leg power ups x 20
    • Decline Merkins x 5 => Shoulder taps x 10 => Decline Merkins x 5

Indian Run POW style to the Mary green for some Mary:

    • LBC x 20
    • Putins x 20
    • Real Freddy Mercury x 20

Indian Run to the pull up bars and divide into 4 groups and rotate:

    • Jump Squats x 10 as the count (I found myself doing a Hurley, nod to March Madness perhaps)
    • Al Gore
    • Merkins
    • Pull-ups

Jog-Sprint alternating run back to the patch-of-dirt-where-a-flag-will-be-planted-when-Roots-posts.  4 minutes to spare so we knocked out some dying cockroach and plank work for good measure.

Count off to 13, nameorama, and announcements.  Tough Mudder week!  Ball of Man with thanks for the opportunity to push ourselves.

  • Who Fartlek’d??

Pre Thang: After having shoulders and arms blown up at WPM and The Mothership, YHC decided to focus on the legs this fine morning. The plan was almost thwarted when the M needed a ride to the airport at 04:30 this morning—since the actual departure was 04:55ish… Thanks to RY for responding to my last minute text and getting things started before I rolled in hot a few minutes late.

The Thang: Mosey toward the club house then over to the bollards at oak alley. Lunge to the first light, High Knees to the next–alternating until we reached the track. Time to put some running back into the skinny w/ Fartleks. That’s Swedish for speed play, not Sea Man’s morning call…

So, OYO, we jogged toward St. Charles to the first light and sprinted to the next–continuing the cycle until we reached the bridge midway through the park. As the pax arrived we did squats until the six was there. More fartleks to the fountain, where we did the squat and wait for the pax.

Next we partnered up at the fountain. One partner ran the square between the track and the avenue while the other did the designated exercise at the benches(Left Leg Step Up, LBC, Right Leg Step Up), then flip flopped until all exercises were complete at which point we did the squat and wait.

More fartleks followed as we made our way to the old golf club house green for some Mary: V-Ups, Russian Twist, Dolly, Freddie, Flutter Kicks x 15 IC.

Indian run back to the virtual flag and circle up for Low Slow Squats x 15 and a brief plank-o-rama.

COT w/ Shout out by YHC

T-Claps to the pax for keeping it together for a great run workout!(Approx. 2.5 miles)

    Good Times!
    Roots

  • Buckle Bunny is here

OK so Rev It had the Q but I was pretty sure he had no idea that Douille put him on the list so I put a Weinke together just in case.

Posted at the Virtual Flag – with 12 men and a FNG.

Beautiful morning. A truly GLOOMY GLOOM.

We started with a quick mosey to the first light pole on the track.
At the first light pole we did:
    SSH x 20, Imp Walkers x 20, Smurf jacks x 20, Imp Walker squats x 20
**I modified here because of the sheer number of ducks in the area.

We mosey’d over to the row bars. In order to honor Rev Its no burpees on Monday rule – we didn’t do any burpees. Eventhough Seaman tried to whine that the All American Body Builders were burpees!
4 groups: Shoulder Taps, Rows, Monkey Humpers – for the ladies walking in the park, and ALL AMERICAN BODY BUILDERS not burpees. The body builders help the count. (10)

Then we indian run’d to the light across from the bridge.
At the bridge we visited our buddy JACK WEBB to ten.

Then we sprinted to the benches. At the benches: Step Ups, Bulgarian Splits, and Dips x 20

Then we Hallelujah run’d to the golf course for a quick burst of Mary.
Peter Parkers, Russian Twists, LBCs, Dying Roaches, and LBTs.

Then long mosey’d to monkey bars. At the monkey bars we waited for the 6 in plank and then we did 5-10 pull ups 2 at a time.

    Sprint to the FLAG.

COT: Prayed to be better today then we were yesterday. Welcome to Buckle Bunny! Seaman came through with a half mean, half funny name for our new guy Tyler from B’ham.
