  • We’re up all night to get War Eagle a little culture

[5:25 AM, City Park, on a wet gray morning]

War Eagle: What is that thingamabob in your hand, Kuch?

Kuch: That’s a bluetooth speaker. It plays music.

War Eagle: Where I’m from, dancing is outlawed and the only music allowed is people singing Sweet Home Alabama.

Thus, it became clear to YHC that some music would be important to War Eagle’s continuing New Orleans education. So after a quick disclaimer, off we set to find a dry spot to warm up and moseyed up Roosevelt Mall to an intersection. Only the day before, I’d been humiliated around this very spot as I attempted to sprint to the finish ahead of Cowbell and Hawg at the Stomp, only to have them “jog” right by me. Cowbell was a little late today and did not reach the mosey spot until after we had already warmed up, so I will call it even.

    Warm-up – all x20 or so

    • Arm Circles
    • Hill Billies
    • Windwills
    • Parker Peter
    • Some hip stretches
    • Mosey back down Roosevelt Mall to the far side of the track for the workout

First Tune of the Day – Tubthumping by Chumbawamba

    • “I get knocked down, but I get up again” = burpee
    • Everything else = SSH

We started getting a little sloppy on the SSH, so we did some in cadence. When we finished, one lap around the outside of the track to maximize those RRR miles.

Second Tune of the Day – Get Lucky by Daft Punk

    • “We’re up all night to get Lucky” = airsquat
    • Everything else = Al Gore

Again we got a little sloppy, and there was a bit of mumblechatter about whether YHC had thought this one through all the way. Instead of acknowledging that this might actually have been a pretty terrible idea, penalty burpees were handed out. When War Eagle critiqued YHC’s form on the penalty burpees, more penalty burpees were issued. Mumblechatter died down a bit after that. Another lap around the track, and T-claps to Cowbell, Smooth, War Eagle, & YaMom & Dem who took it upon themselves to sweep the six each time. I have been the six, and I know what it feels like to have people push you. Knowing you are not out there by yourself while everyone else moves on is a big deal, so kudos guys.

Third Tune of the Day – Flower (the Sally song) by Moby

Only one thing to do here, and that’s up and down merkins holding it at the top and bottom. Another lap around the outside with some more sweeping from the fast crew.

Fourth Tune of the Day – Proud Mary

What else would you do to Proud Mary other than some Mary? So we got down on the wet ground and alternated 10 lbc’s and 10 flutter kicks IC, one after the next, till the song ended.

Out of tunes to play, we Indian ran back down the track to the exit, where we moseyed to the flag for a minute or two of planking. Next time, we will get to Thunderstruck…

As always, thanks for letting me lead. It’s a privilege. F3 has stripped me of my excuses, and forced me to accept being uncomfortable. When we started RRR 4 weeks ago, I didn’t think I could run more than 2 days in a row, I thought I needed more sleep, thought my knee needed more rest and my shin splints and my back would keep me from ever running any real distance again and so on. As we close in on the end of this challenge, I know that I have vastly exceeded what I thought I was capable of just a month ago. For that, I can only thank all of you who set a constant example of hard work, dedication and consistency. SYITG – Kuch

  • Improv at The Foundry

YHC has not been extremely active on the Q sign up sheet.  This is kind of been disappointing b/c being the Q is the only payment that F3 truly request.   After so much that has been given to YHC, he feels that he owes much more.   Of course, he has his excuses, but if he were being completely honest, there is no excuse.  If you can post, you can Q.   When today’s scheduled Q did not show, YHC seized the opportunity to lead and to pay back F3.

    W/U

COT – Lots of intentions were mentioned today for personal friends, F3 families, and thanks were given for our fortunes.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead, SYITG

    Da Parish

NMM – Plenty of PAX are members of Mardi Gras Krewes. YHC rides w/ the Krewe of the Rolling Elvi (in Muses only), as well as Krewe of Thoth (float 9a, last man, top deck). YHC loves hearing the crowds and especially his name or see a sign. If you feel comfortable, share your Krewe & Float w/ the PAX.

  • 3 Years and Counting

My thermometer on the car showed 39 F driving in the gloom, could have been worst (610 Stomp yesterday…) given little wind and no rain. Regardless, (9) PAX showed up wide eyed and willing to help celebrate a beat down marking (3) years in F3 for me! Everything revolved around the number 3 or multiples of, so off we go into the cold.

    Warm Up

    (27) — SSH

    (18) — IW

    (18) — Arm Circles

    (18) — Mountain Climbers

    (18) — Toe Touches

    Now to formally “Warm Up”:

Route 66 via Burpees at each park bench, easy enough….

Then to the open field across from the new Children’s Museum under construction

Bear Crawl Ring of Fire: All PAX form a circle and get in a plank position, in a counter clockwise order each PAX does 10 Merkins. After one rotation we near bear crawl 1/3 of the circle circumference. Repeat for one full 360 rotation.

Move on to Museum pond, after a brief recap of risks of box jumps and former incident…. exercises in cadence excluding Box jumps:

    • (18) Dips
    • (18) Right Leg step ups
    • (18) Left Leg step ups
    • Repeat 1 X

Mosey back to Track for Mary:

    (30) LBCs

    (18) Flutter Kicks

    (18) Hello Dollies

    (2) Laps around track sprint straight aways, jog curves, after curve (6) Jump Squats

Back to flag for COT. As I noted above, many thanks to F3 for the opportunity to lead and participate in this experiment. Emphasis on the 2nd F for Fellowship and the drive to get us all out here on a 39 degree morning for the good of all! Also welcomed PAX from Tallahassee F3 Chapter in town for a visit, and likewise Tclaps for the hurricane recovery efforts from F3 in the area ongoing from last season, hard to think about tropical storms on a morning like this, but we are familiar.

Take it easy and see you in the gloom and on the radio.

    Bongo

  • Amnesty’s New Sneaks

Amnesty made a special request for a dry workout. He recently purchased some new sneaks, and hoped to keep them mud free. The request was honored. After all, it’s Amnesty. His new neon green sneakers offered a beacon of light on this gloomy morning. 13 men showed up for the challenge. The usual disclaimer and off we go.

    Warm-up COP:

    SSH x 20 IC, IW x 20 IC, Plank Jacks, x 20 IC, Windmills x 10 IC, Arm Circles 10 forward 10 backward IC, Mountain climbers x 20 IC

    Next we moseyed to NOMA.

Right leg power-ups x 20 IC, Left leg power-ups x 20 IC. Then a Merkin ladder up the steps of NOMA, with 8 Merkins on the bottom step and 1 Merkin at the top. Back to the fountain for 10 box jumps, right leg step-ups x 20 IC, left leg step-ups x 20 IC. And back to the steps to repeat another Merkin ladder.

Next, partner up for Dora 1-2-3. 100 Floyd Mayweathers, 200 Squats, 300 LBC’s, while the other Pax runs around NOMA.

Then we moseyed back to the flag, stopping halfway for some Mary. Flutter kicks x 20 IC, Hello Dolly x 20 IC, Dying cockroach x 20 IC. We ended back at the flag, and succeeded in our mission. We kept Amnesty’s sneakers dry. Count-off, Name-o-rama, announcements, intentions, and a prayer. Thanks for letting me lead.

  • Paying Homage to #41

“The American Dream means giving it your all, trying your hardest, accomplishing something.  And then I’d add to that, giving something back.  No definition of a successful life can do anything but include serving others.”  -George H.W. Bush

The air was crisp and chilly on Wednesday at The Foundry, just the way we like it.  Perfect conditions for paying homage to the 41st President of the United States on this national day of mourning.  Regardless of one’s political beliefs, it was hard to not have respect for the guy and the days he spent as a leader of our country.  With that being said, we read a few of #41’s quotes before takeoff.  YHC also mentioned that he sifted through some of the Northshore’s backblasts to get some inspiration for the day.  With The Crazy Ivan race coming up in January, us Southshore guys need to make sure we can meet or exceed the physical and mental fortitude of our brothers across the lake.  Without further ado, the disclaimer was recited and off we moseyed down Roosevelt Mall.
    Warmup (with a Northshore twist):
    Good Mornings x10
Finkle Kicks x10R x10L (these were ugly, as expected)
    Arm Circle x10F x10R
    Lateral Lunge x10
    Scorpion Kicks x10L x10R (a tad lackluster)
Forward Lunge w/forearm to ground x5L x5R (good stretching here!)
SSH x41 to cap it off for pres #41
    Foundry:
This would be a circuit found in a Northshore backblast called 3-6-9 which consisted of:
3 Pullups, 6 Merkins, 9 Squats every minute on the minute (EMOM) for 10 rounds.  At first, this seemed a tad too easy but it got the juices flowing a few rounds in.  After round 5, we circled up for a tribute to G.H.W.B. with a plank/merkins circle counting up to 41, then holding a low plank for 41 seconds in silence, then another plank/merkin circle up to 41, topped off with Flutter Kicks x41IC and LBC x41IC.  Finished with rounds 6-10 with some good mumble chatter to boot.  Looking back, YHC feels certain the Southshore PAX can handle that circuit with 4-8-12 or even 5-10-15…we’ll see.
    The Track:
After a mosey for the foundry to the practice track, we circled up for some burpees in honor of George H. W. Bush, stressing good form that would make him proud.  We knocked them out in chunks, x10 x10 x10 x11 for 41 total.  YHC was hoping for a lap around the track but it was time to mosey back to base.
    COT:
The usual announcements of upcoming events and Christmas party/workout next week.  A few more words about #41 before ending with a prayer.
Good way to start the day.  Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

  • Superhero’s and Scary creatures – It must be Halloween

12 PAX met this morning in the gloom of City Park @ the Foundry.  I was expecting to see a few Pax in costume, but only saw a group of men, many in F3 shirts/gear.  We certainly were a scary looking group.     With Voodoo fest still having an impact in the Park, we were somewhat limited in where we could workout this morning.   We moseyed to the lawn in front of the new Children’s Museum for our warm-up as follows:

    SSH x 31

Imperial Walkers x 31 (in honor of my youngest son  (Tiny 2000 or Deduction) who was a storm trooper this evening.

Arm Circles – 10 forward and 10 backward

    Windmills x 20

We moseyed back to the neutral ground area near the flag at the entrance to Roosevelt Mall for the following Halloween themed/superhero/scary workout.    YHC had four pumpkins in a square about 20 paces apart.

Corner 1 – Peter Parkers (spiderman/superhero) x 31, bear crawl (spider crawl) to Corner 2

    Corner 2 – Big Boy Situps (Mummy sit-ups) x31, crab walk/crawl to Corner 3

Corner 3 – Parker Peters (spiderman/superhero) x31, bear crawl (spider crawl) to Corner 4

Corner 4 – Skeleton Jacks (modified SSH squat thrust) x31, crab walk/crawl back to Corner 1

Then run (from the Zombies) the loop of Roosevelt Mall and meet back at the cones/pumpkins.     We were able to finish two complete sets of the exercises above.   With the remaining few minutes we finished with some plank exercise, flutter kicks and some Halloween Burpees.

Announcements, Intentions, and Ball of Man.   Thank you all for the opportunity to lead.  Hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween.

  • Chromosomes & Hooters

Eight men mustured up the energy and desire to get stronger in City Park this am.  Some of the other Wed regulars must have have decided to get their beauty rest in preparation for the H8 tomorrow.  The rest of us reached down, grabbed a pair, and assembled on Roosevelt Mall in the gloom.  YHC was glad to be getting back in the groove after several weeks of no-run and/or low imact workouts.  The goals for the morning were as follows:

    1. Break a sweat and get stronger
    2. Focus of upper body and core in an effort to save some legs for the H8 24 hours later
    3. Recognize that October Down syndrome awareness month
    4. Recognize that October is breast cancer awareness month

About a minute before launch, YHC shared with the PAX some info and stats about Down syndrome, aka Trisomy 21, which Tool 2.0 was born with.  It was also mentioned that many individuals with DS strive for inclusion as well as “abilities vs. disablilities.”  So naturally our number for the day was 21 and after the disclaimer, we were off in a mosey to start our workout.

    Pre-Thang:

IW x21, AC x10F x10R, WM x10, LS Squat x21, Peter Parker x21, Pickle Pounder x10, Hip Flexor x21sec ea side

Mosey down RM, hook a right on Stadium Dr for some backpedaling (100yds?) to the Refinery….FYI the Foundry is fenced off for Voodoo Fest.

Tabata-like circuits, 21 seconds all out w/10 sec rest,  Split up in pairs, four stations:

Round 1:  Pull Ups 3x21sec, rotate, Bench Dips 3×21 sec, rotate, Body Rows 3×21 sec, rotate, Russin Twist 3×21 sec

Round 2:  Pull Ups 2x21sec, rotate, Step Ups 2×21 sec, rotate, Crunchy Frog 2×21 sec, rotate, Squats 2×21 sec

Round 3:  Same as above w/ one 21sec set at each station

Mosey over yonder for hydration and a freshly mowed field.  October is also breast cancer awareness month so we had to pay homage to the ta-tas.  There are various Burpee-for-Boobs challenges that go around social media every October so YHC figured we’d work some in.  In an effort to not drain or strain the H8 guys, we opted for a low-impact burpee variation known as the Inchworm Burpee.  Plus it’s common knowledge that anytime you’re dealing with the ta-tas, you gotta take it easy, be gentle, smooth, and avoid jumping and overly vigorous motions.  From a standing position, bend knees, squat down and place hands on the ground, “inch” up with hands similar to a bear crawl but keeping feet stationary the entire time, then crank out a Merkin, then “inch” back to standing position.   After quick demo, we proceded with Inchworm Burpees x10, then x8, x6, x4, x2.

Headed back to the flag with 90 seconds left for a Plankorama to seal the deal.

COT included H8 announcement, Q’s needed for Stomp and Foundry, and the reading of the Down Syndrome prayer to St. Robert Bellermine, the patron saint of DS.  Intentions for YHC’s neighbor who is pregnant with her second child and had a recent diagnosis of DS…may the positives outweigh any negatives.

Might have been some other stuff YHC failed to recall.

Thanks for letting me lead and allowing me to raise a little awareness for something near and dear to me.

  • Oh! It’s a Murph Day???

A few brave souls showed up at the Foundry for a Murph. A few more showed up because they didn’t look at the schedule and know it was a Murph Day. 😉

-run 1 mile back to the VF (Virtual Flag)

Countoff, namerama, announcements, shoutouts, a prayer. SYITG!

  • Fracsac’s Foundry

YHC filled the empty Q spot at the Foundry less than a day earlier.  Upon waking up to the pitter patter of rain on the roof, YHC was thinking that was a bad idea.  Then the phrase “rain or shine” came to mind, and all was better.  The rain actually held out for the most part.

Six veteran Foundry F3 men gathered near the Shovel Flag at 0530 and heard the disclaimer, followed by a mosey to the track for the warmup:
