Gnarly Nutria IV The Uptown Funk

YHC began Wednesday morning like any other Wednesday morning with a quality 45 minute beatdown at Popeyes (this Wednesday led by the always dangerous Darkwing Duck). YHC’s thoughts quickly turned to the Gnarly Nutria as a nutria was spotted by Hokie Pokey running in the grass near the Pax. YHC took this as a strong omen for an upcoming victory for the World. The native nutria had come out from its hole to bless the World on the morning of the Gnarly Nutria.

YHC’s confidence continued to grow as he arrived at the Gnarly Nutria to see members of the World surrounding him as the World came out in force. Surely the World would continue their winning streak and extend their dominance over the Uptowners on their home turf. Reluctant Yankee shouted out the rules and scoring system and led the racers to the starting line.

A record 91 men lined up for the 4th running of the Gnarly Nutria. 51 for the World. 28 for the Uptowners. 12 for the Northshore. After an odd 2 minute countdown, the runners were off in the humidity and the heat for 5.4 miles of sweaty, stupid joy.

As YHC rounded the first turn of the Gnarly Nutria with Tua and Heisenberg by his side, he his extreme confidence in a victory began to fade and he knew the world might be in trouble in spite of their superior numbers. A mass of Uptowners burst forward past him with a speed the World would be unable to match.

Then the funk hit. YHC doesn’t want to know what the Uptowners are doing in their fabled Audubon park but the stink of the park was strong last night and surely slowed down the time of the World and the NorthShore who aren’t accustomed to the Uptown Funk.

Flatline can hold his head high and claim the title “Fastest Man in F3NOLA” for the next 12 months. Flatline finished the Gnarly Nutria IV in a blistering fast 33 minutes. ESPN8 came in second with 35 minutes. In-Time came in third with a time of 38 minutes. Mulligan finished fourth with 39 minutes and Isobar rounded out the top 5 with 39 minutes and 40 seconds.

4 of the top 5 were Uptowners with In-Time the top finisher for the NorthShore and Shuffles coming in 7th with the top place for the World. Thanks to their domination in speed, the Uptowners overcame the World’s superior numbers.

The Uptowners won Gnarly Nutria IV with 326 points.

The World came in second with 260 points

Northshore came in third with a respectable 127 points coming from only 12 runners.

Tripleshift wins the award for most significant run of the night as he rucksaked the race in honor of Terabyte who went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ earlier this year.

Bogey wins the award for most beautiful face of the night. Thanks for keeping score and being the pretty face waiting for us at the finish line.

    The After Party

The Pax of 91 – 5 gathered together for post-race Name-O-Rama and the announcements of the winner and top finishers. The Pax began with a moment of silence and prayer thanking God for Terabyte and the role he played in F3NOLA.

Followed by a far too long Counterama, followed by a far too long Name-O-Rama, the Pax named 9 FNGs. I am guessing that is a new F3NOLA FNG record. Welcome to Mallrats, Bangs, Johnny Football, Polaroid, Mumbles, Body Shots, Incandescent, Apollo, and Hot Pants.

The Pax gathered together for the infamous sweaty ball-o-man as YHC closed the Pax out in prayer thanking God for the evening and asking Him to use F3 to impact the lives of more men in NOLA. F3 means so much to all of us and may we not hog and hide the friendship, accountability, and growth we have received in F3. Continue to find those men at your work, neighborhood, and in your families who are isolated and struggling. The average American man has less than one friend. YHC has 91. You have 91. Pass this friendship on to others.

  • Ren & Stimpy

As it is Tuesday, the book of Revit says Burpees are acceptable, however, still unpleasant, so we began with 10 OYO. Mosey uptown to the parks edge looping back to Tulane and Gibson Quad for a warm-up circle.

Circle 1: SSH x 20, Arm Circles Forward & Reverse, Peter Parkers*x10 (Pace Car / Alamo Style), Russian Twist x 20

*So last Friday at the Mountain, Pace Car from San Antonio was doing his Peter Parkers differently than we do. Our version is more bow legged mountain climber. Pace Car did that but with a Merican in between each rise of the leg!

Moseyed on to the Navy building where we broke up into 2 groups Alpha and Omega. Omega did pull ups while Alpha journeyed into the Navy Building to get the log! T-Claps to #SeaBiscuit for the assist. Returned to the pull up bars, gave the log to Omega group to carry it over to LBC quad. Alpha stayed behind to do a max set then joined Omega at the quad.

Circle 2: BLIMPS increments of 10. While one group BLIMP’d the other took the log around the quad.

Following BLIMPS we were tight on time but attempted 1-2-3. 50 Big Boy situps with the log while the other group ran to the opposite side of the quad then 100 chest presses. Wanted to do shoulder presses but out of time.

Returned the log to the COT.

*It’s give NOLA day and YOUTHNOLA Run was there raising the bar. We all do a lot in our goal to make a difference. Some mentor with Son of a Saint, YOUTHNOLA, and CAFE HOPE, please consider!

  • “F3 Has Changed My Life”

In a feat only New Orleans can accomplish, the PAX arrived to a cool yet muggy morning at 5:30 today. The sun might even have been peeking through the clouds as we set off into the humid air for a run. With the H8 last week, the new sprint workout, and the general level of intensity at the workouts lately, YHC thought a simple run this morning – no burpees, no sprints, no Mary – would be a nice change of pace. And so, that is what we did.

One of the nice things about a run is that it gives you time to talk. I personally got to run with several different PAX and catch up on all the latest. Among those I was able to run with was Steinbrenner from F3 Memphis, who is in town for a convention. We traded some war stories, learned we were both former high school wrestlers with a tendency to eat an entire large bag of chips in one sitting, and talked about the myriad ways F3 had affected our lives. Somewhere along the way, he looked me in the face and said “F3 has changed my life”.

Later I went to lunch with a friend, and we were joined by another PAX member from this morning, Briefs. Briefs is new within the last month or so, but you wouldn’t know it from the workouts. As we were walking out of the restaurant and chatting about the run this morning, he looked me in the eye and said “F3 has changed my life.”

They say good things come in threes, and it is F THREE, so I will say this much: F3 has changed my life. I think the myriad ways in which this statement is accurate are well known to all of us, and to suggest it’s only a physical change would be silly.

So thanks to all of you for that, as well as the opportunity to lead this morning.

  • Partner Up the WPM

28 PAX gathered on this beautiful, calm, cool Friday morning. Still very dark at 5:25 a.m…. but YHC noticed he wasn’t the only one using passports frequently these days… Your Mom’n Dem and Half Nelson traveled ALL THE WAY from Lakeview to Uptown just for this beat down. Seconds later, YHC noted 2 more Lakeview Pax, Screw Top and Jesus Juice, were also here for their WPM debut. T-Claps to all the out-of-towners including Dr. Quinn from St. Louis. Welcome!!! YHC gave his standard disclaimer and off we went!!!

    Warm-ups

Short mosey to Loyola campus and did the following in cadence:

    Grass Grabbers x 10

    Windmills x 10

    Imperial Walkers x 20

    Self Love x 10

    SSHs x 20

    Mountain Climbers x 20

    The WPM

Moseyed to the base of the WPM. YHC told the PAX to sweep the Six by running up and down the ramps instead of planking.

1.) Ran up the first ramp so that the PAX were at the base of the 2nd ramp. Partner up. First exercise – burpees jump over. One PAX was doing the burpee jump over the other PAX, who was in the low plank position. Each PAX did 5 burpees jump over then Flap Jack. Then ran up the ramp and repeat the same burpees jump over. Ran back down the ramp, rinse and repeat. Then ran back up the ramp and did the final set of burpees jump over. In total, each PAX did 4 rounds (total 20 burpees jump over each).

2.) Side hopped on the flat level from one end to the other and switched direction in the middle. Now at the base of the 3rd ramp. Picked a different partner. 2nd exercise – synchronized air squats. Started off at the base with 20 air squats, ran up the ramp then did 15 squats, ran back down with 10 squats. Ran back up the ramp and finished with 5 squats.

3.) Karaoke on the flat level from one end to the other and switched direction in the middle. Now the PAX were at the base of the 4th ramp. Picked another different partner. 3rd exercise – patty cake merkins. Started off at the base with 20 patty cake merkins, ran up the ramp then did 15 merkins, ran back down with 10 more. Ran back up the ramp and finished with 5 merkins.

4.) Prisoner ran on the flat level from one end to the other to get to the next ramp. Now at the base of the 5th ramp. Picked a new partner. 4th exercise – decline merkins. One PAX (while in a squat position) was holding other PAX’s legs, who was doing 5 derkins. Flap Jack. Then ran up the ramp and repeat the same reps. Ran back down the ramp, rinse and repeat. Then ran back up the ramp and did the final set of derkins. In total, each PAX did 4 rounds (total 20 derkins each while the holder was in a squat position).

5.) Prisoner ran on the flat level from one end to the other to get to the next ramp. Now at the base of the 6th ramp. Picked another partner. 5th exercise – synchronized big boy sit-ups. Started off at the base with 20 sit-ups, ran up the ramp then did 15 more, ran back down with 10 reps. Ran back up the ramp and did 5 sit-ups. Then ran back down the ramp and waited for the SIX.

6.) Now at the base of the 6th ramp again. Picked a different partner for one last time. Wheel barrel up the ramp. Flap Jack at the PAX discretion. Each PAX finished the beat down with 30 LBCs at the top of the WPM.

Ran down the stairs back to flag and finished at about 6:17 a.m. Couple minutes late but no mumble chatter. Yes because Rudy wasn’t there.

    COT

Count-O-Rama 28PAX, Name-O-Rama, announcements, intentions. YHC invited the PAX to stop by Deswine Intervention tent at Hogs for the Cause. Thank You all again for the opportunity to lead. Always a pleasure and honor to workout with the PAX. SYITG

  • Two Minutes of Hate!

On a beautiful, crisp Friday Morning, 20+ PAX gathered for a Wolfpack Mountain beatdown.  So with a quick disclaimer off we….wait Amnesia reminded that we do have two AO’s Uptown.  So with a loud rally cry, two strong PAX (Amnesia and Bad Moon) embarked on a moonlight ganter through the nether regions of Uptown also known as Angry Wave or maybe we should rename Angry Ripple???  I digress.  Let’s Mosey!

    To Touchdown Jesus for Warm-Up:

    • Hillbillies IC X20
    • Wide-Leg Mountain Climbers IC X15 (a new exercise for F3 that YHC pilfered from OTF, Kong watch those eyes…KONG EYES DOWN!)
    • Self-Love IC X20

Let’s continue warmup – PAX Line Up in straight line for:

    • High Knees till Q yells halt
    • Butt Kicks till Q yells halt
    • Kim Jung Un’s aka Supreme Leaders till Q yells halt  (a little mis-coordination on this one by YHC)
    • Open Gates till Q yells halt

Mosey to Res Quad for 4 Corners PIMPS:

    • Pickle Pounders X 5 (2 is 1) then bear crawl to
    • Imperial Walkers X10 (2 is 1) then monkey humber walk to
    • Merkins X15 then crab crawl to
    • PlankJacks X20 then sugar bear crawl (those crawls weren’t sweet!) to
    • Starfish Crunch X25 (2 is 1)

Mosey to Mountain for Static Climb Beatdown run forward up ramp and then backward up next ramp to each flat:

    • 1st Flat 2 minute Squat Hold
    • 2nd Flat 2 minute Plank Hold
    • 3rd Flat 2 minute People’s Chair
    • 4th Flat 2 minute V-Up Hold
    • 5th Flat 2 minute for PAX choice, Al Gore’s or Leg Raises?  PAX quickly chose leg raises.  Apparently those quads were smoked (I’m looking at you Mr. Awesome). Leg Raises it is!

For all above static holds, if you break form at any point, do burpees until 2 minutes is up.

Indian Run down to bottom and mosey back to flag…

Count-Off, Name-o-rama, Announcements, Intentions and Prayer.

Don’t forget PAX, Beatdown and F2 event this upcoming Thursday, March 28th.  Meet at intersection of Jeff Davis/Lafitte Greenway at 6:30 for half hour beatdown then we’ll walk over to Wrong Iron for some F2.

As always thanks for letting me lead!

  • Monday Mayhem – the 11th hour of 49

My plan is to never give in to a number so although on my last day this side of 50 I won’t blame age on forgetting I had the Q…..must have been the foggy brain left over from the LSU tailgating this weekend.  That said I’m glad that I checked the Q list driving in this morning which at least gave a few minutes to come up with something that resembled a beat down.

After a quick disclaimer, 22 men strong we left the gated bullpen and head towards open fields near the rock pile.

    Warm Up – in Cadence

    SSH – 26

    Side Lunges  – 10

    Peter Parkers – 20

Mnt Climbers 10 slow and 10 fast

    Wind Mills x 10

Peter Parkers Oh wait Parker Peters x 20

Go grab a rock……head to the hill, I’ll come up with something.  Switched to the Shelter….the aroma was way to inviting not to add it to our workout challenge!

3 rounds of Tabata 30 sec on with 20 secs rest ONE minute reset between rounds.  At some point during this fun our FNG – now known as Seabiscuit had to much of the rock/smell combination and took a breather –

    Rnd 1

Mnt Climbers (I think we already did these during warm up…..here you go that age thing creeping in)

    Overhead triceps press

    Squat with OH Press

    Curls

    Lunges

    Rnd 2

    Box Jumps

    OH Triceps

    Squat with OH Press

    BO Rows

    Lunges

    Rnd 3

Switch Leg step up (with extension)

    OH Triceps

    Squat with OH Press

    Curls

    Lunges

NOW on to EMOS – a little extra breather will Q fiddled with timer APP

    10 minutes of “Work”

    25 BO Rows

5 Man Makers – Burpees with rock jump at the end

    Lateral Raises x 15

    OH Press x 20

Wall  Squat Sit – 10 reps with a 2 second pause in the sitting position

Rinse and Repeat – Exception – adding reps

    30 BO Rows

    10 Man Makers

    20 Lateral Raises

    25 OH Press

    Wall Squat Sit – Same

Head back to the pile to return rocks – NOTE to those that were running back with Pebbles in hand; challenge yourself and grab a ROCK next time out.

PAX assumed a plank position while waiting for all to return; Q while yelling out some encouragement (as would expect) got some chatter for not “fully” participating?!

Upon all rocks being returned – there was little time for Mary:

1:30 of plank – rotating contact points

Head back to flag…..my only regret of the morning; not attempting to accept the challenge Cowbell threw out in his sprint; thanks for the push as that will drive me for a while!

    COT

FNG – Q was being pressed at the end to tie his F3 name brief break during the Tabata but his commitment to step back in and finish with the PAX definitely earned respect that is reflecting of the name bestowed (I can’t take credit for it but Q in this case gets the final word).  Welcome Seabiscuit!

F3 2.0 partner workout – Oct 28th 7:30 Brees sandbox – more to come I’m sure via other F3 announcements.

Special intentions – especially for those in Florida – Thumper is part of a group coordinating some relief effort – please reach out to him with donations as well as the potential to be part of the physical on hand support.

God Bless Brothers – we are held accountable to lead!
