  • 12 Days of Fitmas – from Bolt

The mosquitoes turned out along with 20 PAX total for my VQ. Feeding on energy from the group we started with a short mosey around the clubhouse parking lot to circle up at the pavilion for an attempt to warm up enough for lactic acid to be released. I think I’m the only one who experienced that after SSH, Lounge Singers on each side (Angie’s List’s new favorite), Grass Grabbers in the middle, Peter Parkers, Parker Peters, Hillbilly Squats, Arm Circles froward/back, Moroccan Nightclubs, Seal Claps, finishing with Self Love.

The workout began with really bad singing of the 12 Days of Fitmas, taking us through 12 different exercises with guest singing appearances from Kermit the Frog and/or Cookie Monster depending on who you ask.
    Day 1: Mosey
    Day 2: Merkins
    Day3: Shoulder Taps
    Day 4: Lunges
    Day 5: Burpees
    Day 6: Squats
    Day 7: Diamond merkins
    Day 8: Big Boy sit-ups
    Day 9: Plank Jacks
    Day 10: Superman
    Day 11: SSH
    Day 12: Mtn. Climbers

With 11 minutes left, we put our fate in the “deca-die” of pain, rolling for random exercises (OYO) including 15 tuck jacks (twice), 15 jump lunges, 20 tricep dips, 20 burpees, 30 mountain climbers, 15 Vladimir Douillies, 20 merkins. Mosey to flag for 20 dying cockroaches, CoT, name-o-rama: welcoming in FNG, Escrow, and finishing with announcements/intentions and prayer. F2 coffeeteria followed, immediately preceded by hosing the dog crap off my shoe which I apparently carried the entire workout.

  • Lest we forget

It was my honor to lead a great group of men this morning as we recognize, remember, and celebrate our Veterans. Whether in times of war or peace, those who have stepped up to serve our country deserve the recognition and praise of all those who call this wonderful country our home. My sincere gratitude and lots of prayers go to all the Veterans of the past, present, and future.

    Disclaimer and Mosey to Warmup:

    In Cadence: SSH X 20, Windmill X 10, Grassgrabbers X 10
    Peter Parkers X 15, Mountain Climbers X 15
Forward Arm Circles X 10, Reverse Arm Circles X 10
*Sufficiently lathered in the humid air…we moseyed to the train tracks and levee.

    The Thang:

11’s consisting of 8 Count Body Builders at the bottom of the levee with Jump Squats at the top.
Start with 10 X 8 Count BBs then to the top for 1 X Jump Squat, then
9 and 2, 8 and 3, etc. All the way down to 1 and 10.
*On your own: Little Baby Crunch and Little Baby Twist til the 6 finished up.

Another mosey led us to the statue in front of the zoo for some partner work. Each group was responsible for 300 total reps completed via 5 rounds of: 20 WWII Sit Ups, 20 Merkins, 20 Bonnie Blairs. While one partner repped it out, the other partner ran a short loop in front of the Zoo. Partners switch out and pick up the count.

To close we circled up on the field in front of the zoo for some Mary:

In Cadence: 20 X American Hammer, 10 X Penguin, 10 X Box Cutter, 20 X Dying Cockroach, and On your own X 20 WWII Sit Ups.

Back to the flag for some light plank work, then Count-o-rama, Name-o-rama, announcements and intentions.

Seaman will be Qing a Sunnyside on Thanksgiving Day @ 8:00am, Drew Brees Playground.

Prayers were offered up for spoken intentions, silent intentions, and all of our Veterans.

Gentlemen, thank you. As always, stepping up to the Flag at 5:30 finds me one way and stepping away from it at 6:15 finds me a little better.

Back to flag, for COT: count-off, Name-O-Rama, welcoming of FNG Miller Gunn “Grinder” and prayers and thoughts, including intention and solid words of empathy from Sandbar for the parents of the 545 separated children split up at the border. Politics aside, each of us can easily imagine the horror of losing track of a child for only a few minutes at a department store, playground, etc. See the report from this morning’s news: https://www.npr.org/2020/10/21/926031426/parents-of-545-children-separated-at-u-s-mexico-border-still-cant-be-found or https://fox5sandiego.com/news/national-news/parents-of-545-children-separated-at-border-cant-be-found/

  • Trail Run #2

Tclaps to Amnesty for getting this trail run idea started back during the beginning of Covid. Here we go for round #2!

Stayed up late trying to plan a workout in a space with a lot of unknowns. Then, naturally, my youngest woke up at 2:30. The fear of oversleeping kept me mostly awake until 4:30 when I popped out of bed. I thought I would get out there early to scope things out again to make sure we didn’t get too lost. I arrived at about 10 after five, strapped on my headlamp, and mosey my way over to forest. I wasn’t even a few steps in when I saw a possum crawling towards me, a turtle to my right, and what looked like multiple sets of eyes starring back at me! I decided it was probably best to just trust my instincts wait for my brothers to join me on this adventure!

Fifteen brave souls showed up for the adventure. There was lots of stretching going on pre-workout and not much talking, except when Ya Mom n Dem tried to give away his hat lamp! It was only a minor crisis when High Rise decided to wake up some peacefully sleeping ants. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Sandbar had gotten his passport just in time to attend the work out. Also, good to see Screwtop out for the second day in a row! 5:30 struck and with the normal disclaimer we were off. Started off in the open field to get things warmed up.

    SSH x 20

    Imperial Walker x 20

    Mountain Climbers x 20

    Left leg hip stretch

    Right leg hip stretch

    Peter Parker x 20

Moseyed into the forest with an army of 14 behind me to the big open area by the swing. Split up into five groups of three. The count was 10 pull ups on the tree branch while one of the other PAX did dips on the fallen tree and the other did full body ab extensions on the swing. The other four groups were:

    Low slow squats

    Decline merkins

    Flutter kicks

    Decline merkins

After everyone got their turn on pull ups we went into the thick of the forest! The tree branches were low so we decided to bear crawl through the narrow pass. When the trail opened back up we mosey through the forest and found our way to the gravel path. Headed down the path to the big open field. I had noticed when planning the work out that in this open field they had what looked like two big cement circles that resembled a figure 8. With the HATE8 on the horizon I thought it was a good opportunity to get some work in. Exercise was for 10 minutes:

Bear crawl The stretch of grass between the two circles, run around to the top of the circle, five Burpee‘s, run down to the bottom of the circle, bear crawl across the grass, run to the top of the other circle, five burpees, run to the bottom of the circle. Rinse and repeat for 10 minutes while listening to Van Halen‘s greatest hits!

Next, we moseyed to a separate gate back to the forest. This led us to the hill which is apparently the highest point in New Orleans. I thought Monkey Hill in Audubon Zoo was the highest point in New Orleans but I guess it’s for debate! At the top of the hill we squeezed in on the concrete pad and did some Mary:

    Pickle pounders x 20

    Freddy Mercury x 20

    Dying Cockroach x 20

    Reverse Crunch x 15

Moseyed down the hill and headed to what I thought was the way out. We weaved back-and-forth through a very narrow trail head and ended up all the way in the back of the forest! We eventually found water and knew that we could follow the water back to the bridge that would get us out of the forest. There were several wrong turns and a couple of dead ends but we made it out and back with all 15 PAX! The unexpected detour caused us to be three minutes late. We got together in the open field for COT. Count off, Namorama, and a prayer for the upcoming hurricane with the sounds of what we think was ol’ Puke Dick in the background! This was a fun one. Thankful for the opportunity to lead!

  • Thank you F3

Cool temps greeted the PAX under the still starlit gloom at The Birdcage. 13 HIM took on a beatdown that someone referred to as “Old School”, and somebody else said was “Intense”. Interestingly I often find that Qing a beatdown actually adds some immunity to the difficulty. I don’t know if it’s the invigoration of leading, or the challenge of remembering the beatdown, or even just the F3 exercise naming conventions, etc. Whatever it is…I like it. Here’s what we were up to this morning…

Disclaimer and Mosey followed by Warmup consisting of…

Right Leg Step Up X 20, Left Leg Step Up X 20, Dips X 20 OYO, Right Leg Power Up X 20, Left Leg Power Up X 20, Dips X 20 OYO

Fastish Mosey to the Flag for Count/Name-O-Rama, Socially Distanced COT, and a Prayer asking for us to be the best version of ourselves as we go about our day.

Thank you to @Peaches for EHing me 2.5 years ago, thank you to @Sandbar for the naming, thanks to the Uptown PAX, thank you to F3NOLA, and thank you to F3 Nation. I enjoy the camaraderie, the variation everyday, both the mumblechatter and the quiet, and the daily reminders that we are not alone as men trying to do good in this world by bettering ourselves and those around us. Whenever you read this chances are an opportunity will be nearby…an opportunity to leave today better than you found it…seize it.

  • Bringing the Thunder

13 PAX braved the feels like temp of 93 degrees and the threat of storms this morning at the Birdcage. We were lucky to avoid the torrential downpours that immediately followed our COT, and I thoroughly kicked my own ass during this beatdown. Hats off to my fellow F3 brothers who pushed me to the brink today.

The Warmup…Short Mosey to an Open Field (not the best idea surrounded by lightning, but what the heck), SSH X 20, Windmill X 10, Imperial Walkers X 20, Grassgrabbers X 10, Imperial Walkers X 20, Mountain Climbers X 20, Peter Parkers X 20.

Short socially distanced mosey to the Zoo parking lot where we began a routine of Some Merkins, Core, Legs, Run around the parking lot…Repeat

    1. Merkins X 11 IC, LBC X 20 IC, Squats X 20 OYO, Run a lap
    2. Merkins X 12 IC, Dying Cockroach X 20 IC, Bonnie Blair X 20 OYO, Run a lap

    4. Merkins X 14 IC, Flutterkicks X 20 IC, Side Lunge (10 each side) X 20 OYO, Run.

The original plan was to repeat this with some variation on rep count, but the ominous skies provoked a Mosey back near the shelter. It was there, in honor of the conditions that we summoned Captain Thor.

    • The Captain Thor: Exercise OYO, but start as a group at the beginning of each round.
    • 1 Big Boy Sit Up, 4 American Hammer (2 is 1), 5 Merkins,
    • 2 BBSU, 8 AH, 5 Merkins

    • 7, 28, 5
    • 8, 32, 5

With a little over 5 minutes left I called on some old fashioned burpees.

    • As many Burpees as you can in 30 seconds, followed by 1 minute of rest X 2
    • As many Burpees as you can in 20 seconds, followed by 1 minute of rest X 2

Back to the flag, 30 seconds of plank until time. Count o Rama, Name o Rama, Soc Dist BOM and COT.

Thanks again for providing me the opportunity to lead. I swear every Q I’ve had I end up doing more than I bargained for, and more than I thought myself capable of. I guess that’s the thing about Leading…you dig into yourself in a way that you didn’t think possible. So, it should stand to reason that stepping up to lead in our community (no matter how small) will afford us the same opportunity…finding out just how much you have inside of you, and realizing there’s a lot more than meets the eye. As we all reflect, discuss, and reflect some more about the current circumstances I just urge us to keep prepping ourselves by becoming the best version of ourselves everyday. The chance to rise to the occasion will present itself, and when it does…How will it find you?

Thanks and see you in the gloom.

  • Dodging Cristobal

Weather was holding off so six Pax departed after a quick disclaimer promptly at 0530.

Found a dry patch at the edge of the park for warmup SSH; Imperial Walkers; Grass Grabbers and Arm Circles (For & Aft).

Mosey to the zoo around flooded parking lot for a modified “short loop” DORA 1-2-3: Merks, Plank Jacks, Squats. Over to the fence for a few rounds of dips, step ups (L&R), decline merks. To another dry square in the parking lot for merkin ring-o-fire, a little MARY, and Al Gore ring-o-fire.

Back to the circle with a few minutes to spare, closing out in the mud with some pickle pounding, and planking. Thanks for pushing as always.
