  • Sweatin’….

I have been to many F3 workouts over the past 21 months, all of which have been great in their own way. But this time I was hoping to do something a little different. At a sales meeting earlier this year, my company had an 80’s themed party that my division elected to dress in 80’s workout era clothing. After a short parooze on Amazon, I came across a Richard Simmons costume, complete with a balding headpiece. I just could not pass it up, especially for under $15! The costume was a hit at the work party, even though Richard dropped a rather husky girl while attempting a dip on the dancefloor. In all fairness to Richard, the dip was unexpected, the healthy young lady was caught up in the moment, and who could blame her.  Still glassy eyed, my immediate thought the next morning was, “I need to Q a workout as Richard Simmons!” so I looked at the Q schedule, and saw I was up at WPM for September 6th. I strategically planned the walk up to the PAX right as the clock struck 5:30AM, announced my disclaimer as impersonating a professional trainer, but really not one, and we moseyed in front of Tulane University for a warm up to the classic sound of the Macarena. All exercises were done in cadence, which fell right into the beat of the music.

    SSHx20

    Imperial Walkers x 20

    Arm Circles x 10

    Backwards AC x 10

After a jaunt to the little mountain Richard determined there was too much traffic there, so an audible was called, and the PAX proceeded to the big mountain where we formed 3 lines for an Indian Run, but not just any old Indian Run. This time we ran prisoner style while flashing our best jazz hands. We stopped on the 5th floor to partner up for some DORA 123.  Exercises were done with various Queen songs in the background (Bicycle Race of course). While partner one was exercising, partner 2 was running up the stairs to the 7th floor, then back down the ramp, and tagging into the exercise picking up where partner one left off this continued until all exercises were complete.

    Merkins x 100

    Bobby Hurley’s x 200

    Freddie Mercury’s x 300,  1=1

Once complete the PAX made its way down to the benches for a quick round of the following all in cadence:

    Dips x 20

    Incline Merkins x 20

The PAX then gathered in front of touchdown Jesus for a round of Mary all while listening to one of Richard’s favorite songs, ”Believe” by Cher. All exercises were done in cadence:

    Penguins x 20

    LBCs x 20

American Hammer (Douille style) x 20

Angie’s List pointed out that there was still a little time left on the clock, so the PAX knocked out 10 Herpes on their own.

We then circled up around the flag, counted off, had nameorama, intentions, announcements and a closing prayer.  It is always an honor to lead this group of men! I hope everyone who attended the workout enjoyed the little change of pace, as you never know when Richard will pop up again!

  • It’s All About The Legs

6 Pax showed up on a cool Tuesday morning. Disclaimer was given and repeated several times so we didn’t have a repeat of what happened on Friday (See BB)

    Intentions Yankee’s Family, Hollygrove

    Thanks for letting me lead!

  • Impromptu

The rule of thumb is “Plan for the expected. Prepare for the unexpected!” Seems the unexpected has besieged us more than our traditional morning strolls in the park. Today was one more of those days. Q was unconfirmed and a no show, so YHS, picked up the shovel and dug ourselves into a hole.

Quick mosey into a warm up, SSH (do we know anything else), Imperial Walker Squats (it had been a while), Arm Circles Seamen Style, 10 Burpees OYO as King Kong counted arm circle in an offensive matter. Quick survey of those registered for Iron Pax Challenge, all but Nip Tuck have registered. So for Nip Tuck 10 more Burpees OYO. Back to the track and mosey.

At the Row Bars we broke into 5 groups of 5. The count was 10 Peter Parkers with an Merican in between each knee to elbow, 2 was 1. Meanwhile a group did squats, lunges, rows, and russian twist.

We continued to mosey, on ways for a ring of fire. Did Mericans in sets of 10, setting it around the circle in both directions from YHS.

Back to the track with alternating Sprint and Mosey between the running men to the fountain. As YHS was gimping along, requested the fastest of the pride come sweep up the six. Around the fountain we gathered for some One leg and Opposite Leg step ups, Dips, and Declined Mericans x10 w/ Shoulder Taps 2 is 1 x10.

Back to the to Sprint and Mosey to the Mary Green as before. Hello Dolly, Rosalita, Box Cutters, J-Lo / Pickle Pounder, and Doctor W (Jingle Vader your presence was needed).

We attempted an Indian Run to the pull up bars. In the process we ran down two group of ladies running. It is never our intention but I have been told we can be like fat people on a SouthWest flight. Where the fat bodies sit in a row, lift the middle arm rest up and dare you to sit next to them. When we are doing 2 lines of IR we need remember to share the track. In this instance we did a poor job of sharing. The first duo completely freaked out almost began to cower swallowed by the passing pax , the second group of 4 or 5 also freaked but joined in liked the idea of an Indian run.

Wanted another pearl but we were running out of time so proceeded to the flag and COT.

The work out blew! Not original! Not Exciting! But we got it done. We were prepared because we planned pushed ourselves previously in the gloom. As you prepare for your next Q, next Sad Clown meeting, next lunch, I challenge you to ask yourself what could go wrong and make your plan for what you will do. The situation will make you a HIM!

  • Holy Grove….on three!!

Wolfpack Mountan…First Wolfpack Q in a while. YHC intended to make it memorable with the goal of 5 “mountains” (in NOLA-below-sea-level parlance). If the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain.

    WARMUP

Standard disclaimer this morning plus a reminder to sweep the six for this running workout. The Pax then moseyed onto Tulane campus, through Gibson Quad to Johnson quad for a warmup. 20 SSH IC, followed by 20 Grass grabbers IC, followed by stretching on each leg. After we finish the warmup, we mosey to the base of the 1st mountain.

    THE THANG

The first mountain may have been an F3 virgin ascent. The PAX circled the Mary and Sam Isreal Science building to an imposing exterior staircase of 4 levels and 8 flights. PAX counted off into 4 groups for spacing and start with 5 burpees OYO. Then the first group begins the ascent while the other 3 groups start 10 merks, 15 Low-Slow Squats and 20 Carolina Drydocks. Each group ascends in turn while the early groups complete the other exercises.

Reassemble for the mosey to the 2nd mountain, dubbed “Sugar Loaf” in the 4/20/18 beatdown. Some of the PAX were on a double-plus mosey up Mcalister, and while sucking wind, YHC noted Holy Grove pacing Catfish and Gspot at the front. Filed for further reference. Sweep the six and reassemble for an Indian Run up Sugar Loaf. Back down the stairs and YHC held the first 10 arrivers for some lagniappe, while the rest of the PAX headed down Calhoun to Mountain #3 – the Loyola Rec Garage [Little Wolfpack?]. The 10 did 10 burpees OYO, then set off again on a hot pace to catch the PAX. Holy Grove breezing by -noted. Two Lines and Indian Run up Little Wolfpack, then down the stairs and off to Big Wolfpack – Mountain #4. T-claps to the PAX that led some Mary while we swept the Six. Reassemble for our third Indian Run. As we gained altitude and lost oxygen, the lines of the PAX thinned out, until we reached the top, gulping air. A twenty count, then down the stairs.

    4 minutes left.

YHC decided to go for the 5th mountain, which we’ll call “Edelweiss” for now. At the stairs on the back of the Loyola music building, YHC offered a modification if any PAX wanted to head back to the flag. It did not appear any PAX followed that option and instead charged up the last mountain, and a quick descent.

YHC again noted some of the PAX (looking at you, Holy Grove!) headed to the flag as if the devil himself were behind them. 4 miles in 45 minutes 17 seconds, plus warm-up, some lagniappe and Elevation!

    COUNTOFF, NAMERAMA, COT

Back at the flag, PAX circled for a breathless countoff and name-0-rama. After the announcements and before the prayer, the PAX noted Holy Grove, weaving about in a daze of football glory, with one fist in the air, mumble-shouting something that sounded like “F3/ClevelandRocks/I have no Pants?!! [not sure] ON THREE!!!” Apparently Holy Grove doesn’t speak “modify.” TClaps and thanks to quick thinking by Triple Shift and Drs Walleye and Tinkles to help our brother to the ground before injury could be added to injury. Much splashed merlot followed, and then a visit by EMS and a trip to the ER. Tclaps again to Walleye, Tinkles, Sea Man, Jadaveon, Catfish, Frac Sac and several others who got water and ice and stayed with Holy Grove. Thoughts and prayers – gents.

Which brings YHC to this point. It is good we push ourselves and each other, embracing the challenge. But we also must be mindful of one another and pay attention. Sweeping the Six is important. Making sure all the PAX are hacking is important. We are blessed with many medical professionals in our PAX. Maybe an F2 with some CPR training would be a good thing. We can’t make each other stronger if we are not here.

  • 7 of Diamonds

Kickin’ it old school on a Tuesday morning at Tsunami

A quick disclaimer about not being a personal trainer and we were off to the circle of power for a brief warmup:

    Sidestraddle Hops x 20, Self Love x 10, Peter Parkers x 20

Then a run to the newly softened grass at the Tulane quad for a true 7 of diamonds:

At each corner of the quad:

    7 burpees

    14 Murkins

    21 Tin Snips

    28 Squats

    21 Tin Snips

    14 Murkins

    7 Burpees

Somehow we were done with plenty of time for Mary:

15 LBCs, 15 Penguins, 15 Dying Cockroaches, 15 Hello Dollys

A run back to the benches by the circle of power for Right leg step ups x 15, Dips x 20, Left leg steps x 15.

    Count off and prayer.

  • [City] Park it like it’s hot

[City] Park it like it’s hot

When I woke up on Saturday morning, I was feeling a little sore from Okwata & Wolfpack Mountain on Thursday & Friday. But once I got out to City Park & stretched a bit, my watch hit 6:30am, and it was time to roll. We mosey’d over to the peristyle for the warmup.

    Warm Up:

    • Self Love – 15 in cadence
    • Freddy Mercury’s – 20 in cadence
    • Side Straddle Hops – 25 in cadence
    • Plank Jacks – 25 in cadence
    • Arm circles – 10 forward, 10 backward

    The Thang:

After the warmup, we ran to Marconi & back to the peristyle. Once back at the peristyle we did:

    • 20 partner push ups
    • 25 partner leg throws (ab exercise)

Then we ran to Marconi & back again, and when we got back to the peristyle we did:

    • 10 inchworm burpees
    • 25 box cutters

After the box cutters were done, we ran to the fountain. At the fountain, we did:

    • Fountain box jumps: each PAX got the choice of doing either 10 box jumps onto the top ledge of the fountain or 20 box jumps onto the bottom ledge of the fountain

After the Box jumps, we partnered up and did:

    • Partner 1 – 100 Rocky Balboas on the museum steps
    • Partner 2 – dips on the fountain
    • Then we switched

After this we mosey’d to the side of NOMA and did:

    • Partner 1 – 60 mountain climbers (2 is 1; where each leg pump counted as 1)
    • Partner 2 – People’s chair against the wall
    • Then we switched

After this, we mosey’d to the track & did some mary:

    • LBC’s – 20
    • Flutter kicks – 20 cadence count
    • Dying cockroaches – 20 cadence count
    • Levels (6 inches, 12 inches, 18 inches) – 20 seconds each level

After the mary, we hit a lap around the track & then mosey’d back to the flag for the count-off, name-o-rama, announcements, intentions & prayer. Thanks for posting, fellas; I enjoyed grinding through the beatdown with y’all!

  • Attack the Mountain

It was a humid June morning when I arrived at the flag on Friday. After some stretching & some talking, the clock hit 5:30am, and it was time to commence the beatdown. We did a brief jog down the street and then we circled up once we got back to Loyola

    Warm Up:

    • Side straddle hops – 15 in cadence
    • Mountain Climbers – 15 in cadence
    • Grass Grabbers – 15 in cadence
    • Imperial squat walkers – 15 in cadence
    • Arm circles – 10 forward, 10 backward

    The Thang:

After the warmup, we headed to the mountain & partnered up. Then we proceeded to do the following: Partner 1 runs to the wall & back, while Partner 2 planks & waits. When partner 1 returns, Partner 2 then runs to the wall & back, while Partner 1 planks & waits. Once Partner 2 returns, then both partners run up to the wall together & wait for the rest of the PAX to do the same. Once all the PAX arrived at the wall, I would then call out an exercise for the PAX to do on their own. Once completed, we would repeat the same sequence again & again until we reached the top of the mountain. The exercises that each partner did while waiting for the other partner to complete the run to the wall & back are:

    • Center hand plank
    • Side hand plank on right side
    • Side hand plank on left side
    • Feet 6 inches off the ground
    • Feet 12 inches off the ground
    • Feet 18 inches off the ground
    • Break (no exercise on this round while waiting for the partner to finish the back & forth run)
    • Stationary squat (tree hugger) without using the wall
    • Stationary squat with your back against the wall

The exercises that the PAX did together when we collectively reached each wall are:

    • Seal Jacks – 20
    • Slow Squats – 20
    • Floyd Mayweathers – 40
    • Burpees – 10
    • Partner Push Ups – 15
    • Rocky Balboas – 40
    • Windmills – 15
    • Plank Jacks – 20 (2 is 1)
    • Jump Overs (one partner planks, while the other partner jumps over him) – 10

Once we made it to the top of the mountain, we touched the last wall with our partners & then went down the steps to the bottom of the mountain. Once at the bottom, we mosey’d back to the flag for the count-off & name-o-rama. We had an FNG with us this day, and after some deliberation it was determined that he would be named Isobar. After Isobar’s name was solidified, we did the intentions & then closed with the prayer. Thanks for letting me lead, fellas; I enjoyed attacking the mountain with y’all!

  • Not F’ing Around

Seven PAX showed up to arguably the “toughest workout in town”.

After a brief disclaimer we mosyed to the Tulane ring of power for the warm up: SSH x20, IW x20, arm circles forward x10, backwards x10, Chinooks clockwise x10, counterclockwise x10, Seal Jacks x20 & Hillbillies x20

Mosyed to the benches by Tulane’s lawn (currently brown & steamy) for running power leg ups on the bench – right leg down the bench and left leg back.

Then moseyed around the brown lawn to the green & extremely wet lawn for a round of 7s: knee slapping jump squats on one end with crossfit merkins at the other. For added fun, we did five burpees everytime we crossed the middle for a total of 60.

Back to the benches for a little more leg work: RLSU x20, RL Bulgarian Split Lunge x10, Bruce Lee’s x10, Dips x20, LLSU x20, LLBSL x10, Decline Shoulder Taps x10 & Decline Merkins x10

Lastly back to the ring of power for a jam packed two minutes of mary but not before 20 monkey humpers. Mary: Flutter kicks x20, box cutters x20, tin snips x20 & hello dolly x20

Back to the bricks (sans flag): count-off, name-o-rama, announcements (read Yank’s email) & a prayer.

    Good times on a Tuesday…
