    Murph Prep

Fifteen men gathered around 3 shovel flags, disclaimer, and let’s mosey to the track.  Two laps and hit the outdoor gym.  As we grow and build up to a full  Murph, we modified.  After the two laps, begin the pull-ups, merkins and squats.  Four sets of 5 pull-ups, 10 merkins and 15 squats is 1 round.  Run one lap after each round.  After the fifth round, run two laps to get the 2 miles.

TClaps to the few who completed it.  TClaps to the pax who worked hard to grow and improve.

Back at the Shovel Flags, countoff , namerama, announcements, shoutouts and a prayer.

  • Black Friday Murph

The disclaimer was short and there was no warm-up.

    The Thang

    A Murph.

    • 1 mile run on the track around Pontiff
    • 100 Pull-ups
    • 200 Merkins
    • 300 Squats
    • 1 mile run on the track around Pontiff

We partitioned the exercises in reps of 5-10-15.  I think we all modified the pull-ups in some form or fashion: jump pull ups, legs on the slide or step, not going all the way up, negatives, etc.

Tool, still recovering, rode his bike to the AO and then did the exercises sans runs.  T-claps to Tool for keeping at it while injured.  Glad to hear he was able to run the Turkey Day race with no issues.

Everyone pushed hard and finished strong.  The first mile was just a little over an 8:00 pace.  Below are our unofficial times:

    • Hawg – 43:16
    • JV – 43:41
    • War Eagle – 44:31
    • Rev Sox – 44:36

The Murph is tough, especially the pull-ups.  Kudos to the men that came out to do it today.  That’s how we get better.

    -Hawg

  • Foundry Murph…Modified

DISCLAIMER and let’s mosey….due to a couple pax on limited duty (including YHC), we modified the Murph and limited the running. It also helped the pax work on pullups.
Mosey to Baby Foundry, OYO (On Your Own) four sets of 5 pullups, 10 merkins, 15 squats, then run around the museum and back for five more rounds.
Times up, let’s mosey back to the SF. Countoff, namerama, announcements, shoutouts and War Eagle took the prayer.
    IRON WAS SHARPENED!

  • Oh! It’s a Murph Day???

A few brave souls showed up at the Foundry for a Murph. A few more showed up because they didn’t look at the schedule and know it was a Murph Day. 😉
Explained a Murph, Disclaimer and let’s mosey:
-run 1 mile to the Foundry
    -100 pull-ups
    -200 merkins
    -300 squats
(recommended it be broken down into 20 sets of 5 pull-ups, 10 merkins, 15 squats)
Some completed the exercises in time, the rest worked hard on improving and getting stronger.
-run 1 mile back to the VF (Virtual Flag)

Countoff, namerama, announcements, shoutouts, a prayer. SYITG!

  • Courage for a Murph

Three brave souls displayed intestinal fortitude by showing up to take on another Murph.
Dictionary.com’s definition of Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.
My definition: when faced with difficulty, danger, pain, etc… is overcoming that fear, which is Courage.
Disclaimer, let’s mosey… for a Murph; 1 mile run to the Foundry, 5 pullups, 10 merkins, 15 squats x 20 sets. Some completed this and some are working on it and getting stronger. 1 mile back to the flag.
Countoff, namerama, announcements, shoutouts, and a prayer. SYITG

  • Up Towner #2 – Murph 7/20

The name says it all – Speaking for my self, still feeling a little sore from the GN I was not looking forward to pushing through a Murph.  That said some workouts you simply have to get started – focusing on something or someone else and simply give it all you got!

Pax of 4 initiated our 1st mile around the park – keeping together with 2 Utes having us around an 8:10 pace.  Now at the “place” the fun begins – 100 pull ups, 200 push ups and 300 squats.

All of us decided to break it up: 5 – 10 -15 pushing each other through the effort (offering spots on pull ups to ensure quality form).  Note to Abacus – “duck” – I think it actually happened twice where being oxygen deprived or maybe fogged up glasses from effort he walked into one of the lower crossbars – but none the less pushed through.

In the midst of all this effort – Amnesty had jumped in the fray and joined the misery!

Now complete of our # all that was left – 1 more mile!  Amnesty suggested we take advantage of the track rather than the loop around the park, all agreed and went to work.

Job well done guys…..Murph complete!- Count Off, Name, Intentions and Prayer of thanksgiving.

Each time I do this workout I can’t help but think of some of my brother Marines as well as others who’ve served in ALL branches honorably – giving that ultimate sacrifice.  This is what drives my motivation to push through the small amount of discomfort, yes pain at times but then again I give thanks to God for my health and the fact that I get to go home at night safely to a loving family……while those I push through for are hopefully in place I can only aspire to reach!  God Bless!

  • Memorial Day Murph

Growing up, Memorial Day represented the first weekend of summer.  This was the first time we would pack up the car, hitch up the boat, and head to Lake Norfork on the eastern side of the Ozarks; a ritual we would repeat every weekend until Labor Day.  I loved Memorial Day and hated Labor Day.  Labor Day represented the end of summer, the beginning of school, and the end of fun.  Made sense that a holiday celebrating work would represent all those terrible things.  Also appropriate, Memorial Day represented freedom.  School was out.  It was time to be care-free and head to the lake.  I had a good understanding that Memorial Day represented freedom, but I never considered the cost associated with that freedom.  And that is unfortunate, because that is what the holiday is really about.

So for Memorial Day 2018 F3 New Orleans did our best to recall the sacrifices made.  We, like many others around the nation, completed a Murph.  A Murph is a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 merkins, 300 squats and a 1 mile run, named in honor of Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy Seal who lost his life in Afghanistan.  I have feeling the real Murph didn’t modify his pull-ups as much as I did.  Oh and he wore a weighted vest through the whole thing.

    Naked Man Moleskin

Great showing by the Uptown and World Pax, coming together at City Park.  I was impressed.  Further confirmation that 0530 is the right time to workout on the weekdays:  November Project showed up at 0600 only to find us on the equipment.  It worked out though, mainly because the F3 Pax crushed this Murph.  We were all running our final mile by the time they needed the pull-up space.  Lucky for them, there was no showdown.  Also lucky for us Da Parish and Rudy were not around.  I’m certain they would have broken into song from West Side Story.

Impressive times by all.  I believe Mahatma and Gabrielle completed it in about 36 minutes. We finished with Mary, culminating in a 21 gun salute of the American Hammer.

Great way to start the week and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.  Thanks guys.

Today’s workout was inspired by the Cross Fit workout known as the Murph.  It was inverted and extremely modified.  YHC has a long way to go, but maybe one day we will do an actual or at least a slick Murph at one of the NOLA AOs.  If you have time, you may want to check out the Wikipedia page of Lt. Michael Murphy.  It is a humbling read.  There is also a book and a movie about the Operation where he lost his life.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_P._Murphy

    • T-claps to RY for pushing YHC on the 1 mile run, to Rev for selecting Gibraltar, and to Amnesty for sharing the load of Gibraltar.
