  • Reindeer Games – from Russo

Temperature was down to 37 this morning at the Gipper, which was not quite low enough for a winter wonderland (or sleeves for YHC), but cold enough for some reindeer games.

As a kid, if you asked me what the best part of Christmas was, the easy answer was presents. From Legend of Zelda II: Adventures of Link to a Commodore 64 and its floppy disks, from Castle Grayskull to Optimus Prime, nothing beat the joy of ripping open wrapping paper, fumbling to tear apart boxes, and hoping you wouldn’t have to deal with the nightmare of shrink wrap. I got really, really good at feigning joy when clothes or books were the end result.

As I got older, the best part of Christmas (besides the whole Jesus in a manger thing) moved from gifts to sleeping late because there was no school for two whole weeks, then to holiday parties, and then again to where it currently resides: eating. And more eating. And then eating some more.

But because the gifts are a staple of the holidays, YHC was in a giving mood today, serving as the MC for a few rounds of Dirty Santa!

Warmup (All IC, either 12x or 21x to honor today’s date as a palindrome – 12-22-21)
    – Seal jacks (not plank jacks)
    – SSH
    – Cherry pickers
    – Grass grabbers
    – Imperial walkers

    Thang
Your basic Dirty Santa / White Elephant. The rules are simple:
    (1) Each HIM picks a number.
    (2) Number 1 picks a random gift/exercise from Santa’s bag (in this case, Santa was slumming it with a quart sized Ziploc) and performs said exercise while the other HIM perform the standard (e.g. merkins).
    (3) Number 2 has a choice: Number 1’s chosen exercise, the standard, or a new “gift”. If he chooses either of the first two options, the one who had their “gift” stolen can steal or select another mystery “gift”.
    (4) Around and around we go, until all HIM have a chance to select.

    The “gifts”:
    -10 merkins
    -20 jump squats
    -30 squats
    -8 Hand release merkins
    -20 hello dollies
    -20 leg lifts
    -30 monkey humpers
    -25 plank jacks
    -4 krakken burpees
    -8 SMCs
    -15 murder bunnies
    -20 bear crawls
    -10 diamond merkins
    -50 high knees
    -24 Apollo ohnos
    -15 scissor kicks
    -12 star jumps
    -20 freak nastys
    -1 burpee
    -2 calf raises
    -20 hip slappers
    -12 hallelujah squats
    -2 gas pumps
    -33 cherry pickers
    -6 donkey kicks

Between rounds, Pax also moseyed around the courthouse and square to provide for some strategizing.

A mosey back to home base, COT, name-o-rama, announcements and prayer closed us out.

T claps to Fletch for also playing Santa and gifting us with his famous hot sauce.

I don’t often have a chance to make the Gipper because of weekly commitments, so I appreciate you all joining me and letting me lead you all.

One final note: I had an opportunity to watch The Chosen’s Christmas program, and the theme was “People must know”. People must know about the wonder of the Nativity, and who Jesus is, and how blessed we are with a Savior.

My goal in the new year is to use that theme of “People must know”, not only regarding the gospel, but also about the benefits of F3. We all know them, and have been EH’ed at some point, and if you’re reading this, it stuck with you. I challenge us to continue the EHs, step out of our comfort zones, and spread the word.

  • Fall Back – from Steve

Talk about a dark warmorama. About the only definable figure I could make out was, well nobody, really, since Shooter wasn’t there. Of course I knew Jose was present from the early morning grumbling, but the rest of the crew were shrouded in mystery. Given such circumstances, YHC delivered a clear disclaimer in case there were any FNGs (turned out there were two), and we got things rolling.

Started off with the usual – good mornings, windmills, torso twists, arm circles, IW’s, Hillbillies, SSHs, High Knees – mostly at 10x IC, but a 15 and a 30 crept in there. I like to say those instances are “to keep the pax on their toes,” but of course the pax is smarter than that – they know it’s just early morning brain fog.

We hadn’t moseyed to the playground in a while, so that was on the menu today, stopping at each intersection for a set of 10x deconstructed burpees. Zoolander’s No-Booze-November had hit a snag the night before (a snag by the name of Woodford Reserve), and so my originally planned set of x20 burpees seemed cruel as he had, not but 5 minutes before this point, requested “no burpees, please.” So we deconstructed instead, which would mean 10x squats, 10x groiners, 10x merkins, and 10x jump squats. Knocked those out at the three intersections and then hit a fourth one when we reached the playground.

Then it was time for one of my lakefront standards, a partner routine where P1 wall sits and performs overhead air presses while P2 hits three stations: 10 t-merkins, 10 jump squats, 10 big boys. Three rounds of that and it was on to neighboring grass patch for a few games.

That’s right, games. Let it not be said (Toto) that I do not include any fun in my beatdowns! First up was a game called When Animals Attack, which features one pax (it) bear crawling to tag any of the other guys, who are all crab walking. Any one who is tagged then performs 5 burpees and immediately joins in as a bear, to help tag the rest of the crew. I had initially envisioned a rabid, growling Tanked Up tearing through that patch of grass, but alas, when the sun finally rose this morning and it was clear who was standing before me, there was no Tank to be found. Grundy was the next best choice, so he became the first bear. Now, whoever invented this game clearly did not know the Northshore region’s distaste for crab walking because when the game finally began, the crabs all just sat in place waiting to be tagged. Some even moved closer to the bear! It seemed unanimous – the guys would rather do their 5 burpees and half-heartedly attempt to tag others than crab walk five steps. The next round was hardly better than the first, with Zoolander and his stomach of steel as the bear, and so we moved on to another game: Duck Jousting.

To say duck jousting was more successful might be a stretch, but it was certainly more entertaining. In this game, it’s every man for himself. You get in a low duck walk position with your arms across your chest, and hobble over to the nearest pax to try and topple him without the use of your hands. Once you’ve been knocked over, you start high kneeing until the game ends.

Though this was totally a Mathlete type of game, a surprise attack by Zoolander knocked him out early on. It came down to Jose, Swole, and Zoo. Swole attempted a Switzerland type of strategy, where he simply sat (or squatted) off to the side and awaited the victor between Jose and Zoo. But this proved faulty when Zoo took him down by surprise. By this point, our two gladiators had entirely abandoned the rule of duck walking (well, let’s be fair, Zoolander was never actually duck walking from the start). Even with an assist from Bird, Zoo was unable to take down Jose, but one final assault sent both men to the ground in a tie.

Time to head back, so we formed two lines and Bataan Death Marched back to the flag. Once back, we did some single leg squats to the sea wall while Turbo graciously picked up the six. Quick Mary and time for COT. Welcome FNG’s Slater and Woody, and t-claps for hanging in there. Hope to see you guys back out soon. (And a personal thanks to our FNG’s for forcing me to write a backblast after months of negligence.) Hammer prayed us out and off to Book and the Bean for coffeteria. Appreciate the opportunity to lead you men, SYITG.

  • The Young and the Restless: IPC week 1.2 – from Akbar

15 braved the Lakefront on a beautiful day for a beatdown, 1 in a stroller. No, it was not Bushwacker. The 2nd day of IPC week 1 was upon us, and the plan was to have 2 Q’s. Jose 10k took the 2nd Q with a plan for football, but with only 3 PAX not doing IPC, it was a bust. So – Jose10k and Barely Legal did it again. T Claps guys.

After an elongated explanation and several questions, the playlist started and we got to work. Speedy and Tank were out of the gate hot with Hammer not far behind. Great work again guys, everyone finished. Here are the results from the score sheet – missing a few times.

    Speedy 26.24

    Tank 27.16

    Hammer 29.56

    Zoolander 30.0

    Steve 32.30

    Chainsaw 32.28

    Akbar 36.15

    Jose 10k 37:33

    Slider 38.15

Bushwacker arrived at 0700 after his shift and Moby came strolling up in his convertible just in time for COT.

And yes, Speedy beat Tanked UP! Impressive, a 17 year old and a 62 year old take the top 2 times. Tank may not be that restless – he went to cut a yard right after COT.

YHC had trouble lifting the phone for a picture after this beatdown, great work by all.

Jose10k prayed us out with thoughts and prayers, remembering 911.

Coffeeteria at Book and the Bean.

  • IronPax week 1 – from Akbar

8 strong this morning for Week 1. YHC proctored and DJ’d while 7 went to work. Cowbell dropped by after his run for some F2. Finishing times were:

    BBQ 43 (modified)
    Jose 10k 43 (modified)
    Einstein 44.15
Barely Legal, Moby Dick and Maverick were close to finishing but had to bolt early.

YHC prayed us out with thoughts of safety and thanks for all those coming in to help in IDA recovery from out of state.

Lakefront is 2nd IPAX of the week with separate Q for those already completed.

  • 21-15-9 – from Akbar

YHC had 2 beatdowns in mind and was on the fence about which workout to do all the way to the parking lot. Would it be 21-15-9 or a block grinder? Figuring we’ll have plenty of block work the next month, 21-15-9 it is (with a little block work too).

    WU – 20 x SSH, Grass Grabbers, IW IC; Self-Love x 10 IC

Thang 1: 21-15-9 reps each set. First 2 exercises are always Merkins and Squats

Set 1 21 Merkins, 15 Squats, 9 Australian mountain climbers (BTTW position). Mosey to benches at justice center.

Set 2 Freak Nasty, mosey to next concrete stairs

Set 3 Sister MC. Bear crawl to top of stairs

Set 4 Monkey Humpers, run downstairs, back up, lunge walk downstairs, lunge walk up, bear crawl downstairs

Set 5 Calf Raises, mosey to benches or somewhere for triceps

    Set 6 Freak Nasties

    Thang 2: 21-15-9 block work

Set 7 21 block rows, 15 curls, 3 dirkins – rinse and repeat for 3 total sets

Set 8 21 Tricep raises, 15 Chest Presses, 9 Goblet Squats – rinse and repeat for 3 sets

Recover, back to flag for Mary

    LBC, Hello Dolly, E2k right/left x20; Leg raises x 10

    Workout called, count-o-rama, name-o-rama

Announcements: Kickball at St Pauls with FIA Thursday. YHC 2 year anniversary Saturday

Great work today guys, thanks for letting me lead – Akbar

    NMM

21-15-9 is a standard count for crossfit, and there are many variations. I believe the standard is to do 21/15/9 reps of each exercise AMRAP for time. Russo would know that each of those numbers are divisible by 3, so you could vary by 3 sets of 7 and so on. Too confusing for a guy who can’t even add ISI numbers without a calculator. Great to see Yellow Snow out again for his 1st Gipper beatdown.

  • 1 year anniversary – from Jose10k

Warm-up: ssh, grass grabbers, arm circles, windmills all reps of 15 in honor of my daughter turning 15 on Tuesday. The thang: moseyed to the courthouse for some dora. 100 merkins, 200 squats, 300 lbcs partner work. While one partner was performing each exercise, the second partner climbed the walkway rails hand over hand. Once finished, moseyed back to the parking garage entrance, then sprint up the inclines up to the top. Once at the top, Moby busted out the chain. We gathered in a line and each man pulled the chain across the parking garage. Last 5 minutes, busted out some mary. Leg raises, crunchy frogs, etc.. COT and Shooter prayed us out. BBQ busted out some birthday brownies along with some party poppers. Thanks to his wife for the tasty treats.
Thanks for letting me lead, thanks for celebrating 1 year at the A1C, and thanks for the support for creating the AO. Y’all push me to be better.

  • Bunch of Dora’s – from Akbar

16 PAX arrived at the Lakefront Saturday to get better. Today’s agenda would be simple, a Steve workout if you will. Dora 123 * 3. Great to be back with my brothers after a 10 day vacation.

Most were finished with 2 minutes left, but not all. QIC called recover and we circled up to honor The Manny with 25 Little Manny Crunches.

    Count, Name-o-Rama. Welcome Swole Patrol!

NMM – T Claps to The Manny for making the trip from Picayune, great to see you brother. Manny will try and make 2 workouts a month going forward. And to Grundy for the EH of Swole Patrol, who walked up late with no fear and jumped right in. Going head-to-head in Bear Crawls with Swole was quite impressive, he gave it all he had. Chainsaw and Pickaxe teamed up with YHC for the lightning round, with impressive modifications and counts. Also great to see Bypass again for his 3rd beatdown of the week. We worked a lot more shoulders than I thought, mine are still burning at this writing. Hammer named Swole, reminiscing back to his working days on the West Bank – where he saw a stout dude in a truck with Swole Patrol emblazoned on the front. Good work men.

  • Time to be a Big Boy – from Waterpik

Crowds have been smaller than usual this summer at the various beatdowns around town with many regulars out of
    Town with family vacations.

Circle up around the shovel flags to warmup, with SSHs, ACs, squats, imperial walkers.

Mosey westward almost to the gazebo and the pax got down to business.

First up were 11s with derkins on the sea wall and burpees at the street. YHC instructed the pax to bear crawl to the walking path, then jog to the street to do the burpees. On the way back the pax back pedaled.

Only about halfway to the closing bell, YHC made sure everyone was a Big Boy. Partner up and do 3 sets of 20 Big Boy sit ups while partner holds feet down. Switch.

Circle back up for a set of Al Gores. Sprinkle in some Peter parkers, and one footed and two feet hops. 15 minutes to spare.

Last on the list for this downpainment was a set of 5s. Same as previous with Derkins and burpees as the exercises.

With less than 5 minutes to spare, the pax moseyed back to the flags.

Cot and thanks to Manny for praying us out.

    Thanks for letting me lead

  • Rock me like a…post tropical cyclone? – from Russo

Pax of 11 braved the 14 mph gusts and one major squall lasting 3.4 minutes at Granny’s this morning. YHC arrived early to do a little chalk drawing of the day’s activities and Hammer was already ready to get going.

Warm up (all IC, 10-15x each)
    – seal jacks
    – imperial walkers
    – cherry pickers
    – high knees
    – windmills
    – arm circles

    Thing before the Thang
Never one to shy away from a good mosey (ahem), YHC led a slow mosey around the warehouse and back through Granny’s columns (where Hammer had flashbacks to 1986 in the Lakeside mall arcade lining his quarters up to challenge any and all comers to Centipede).

In tribute to Shooter and his reluctance to get calf implants, Pax did calf raises up and down the pilot house (3 for each step).

    Thang
Ladder: (A) 10 exercises, descending rep count from 10 to 1
    (B) 10 rounds
    (C) 10 different starting exercises, so theoretically 55 reps for each movement, 550 total (MATH!!!)
    (D) Rotate clockwise positioning so each person calls out the next rep count and exercise

    – merkins
    – scissor kicks
    – jump squats
    – crab cakes
    – plank jacks (2 is 1)
    – big boy sit-ups
    – sister Mary Catherine’s
    – monkey humpers
    – shoulder tap merkins
    – crunchy frogs

    Post-Thang Thing
Continuing with the theme of 5 (at marked market position 55 as noted by Chewy), YHC fondly remembers when Arby’s would fill up a growing boy with their “5 for $5” so pax did 5 reps of 5 exercises
    – freak nastys
    – circle ups
    – groiners
    – leg raises
    – suicide squats

A plank for a minute or so of remaining time closed us out.

COT, count, name o Rama, and prayer wrapped things up.

    A few reminders:
    (1) FIA/F3 mixer this Thursday!
    (2) Jose is shooting for 15 at the A1C on Friday!
    (3) Gnarly Nutria is scheduled for 7/21
    (4) Planning trip to help out our brother Goose down in God’s other country (Thibodeaux) on 7/24

BONUS set list from this morning:

Over the Hills and Far Away – Led Zepplin
    The Zoo – Scorpions
    Broken – Seether
    Money Talks – AC/DC
    Psycho Killer – Talking Heads
Policy of Truth – Depeche Mode
    Wheels – Foo Fighters
    Little Things – Bush
Dead Man’s Party – Oingo Boingo

As always, thank you all for joining me, letting me lead, and helping with that task throughout, but mostly for continuing to entertain me as we make sweat angels. SYITG
