  • You can’t Squeeze the Charmin – from Mahatma

It’s Sunday New Year’s Day pax scattered here, there and everywhere except no Q for RC on Monday….done and there is a plan. Pulling up hot at the last minute (damn 1st fail of my 2023 resolution) YHC jumps out to join the crowd of pax waiting for direction. Quick disclaimer and focus point “reflect to impact reflex”

Mosey to the parking lot outside the field Warm Up:
    Scantron Stretch rinse and repeat
    Side lung
    SSH
    Scorpion kicks
    Shoulder taps

Mosey to bleachers near back of the playground.
    5 rounds with good form
    10 Carolina Drydocks

    30 V-Ups
Ascend the bleachers to the top and back down. Rinse and repeat

Once complete run the maze continuously until all pax complete and the 6 joins the group and does 3 laps.

Mosey to the mini levee – line up shoulder to shoulder – Indian merkin ladder with hand slap between pax

Line up Indian run to the gym
    2 rounds of handrail squats

Climb the stairs and find some wall – sit a spell – YHC attempted to provide instructions as to form where you feel the burn in your thighs. Running man to air press back to running back to air press.

Line up Indian run back to the flag.

COT – focus on the need for leadership Q commitment. Bolt step up and recruited several new pax to fill open slots on Friday for VQs. He held them after and told tales about El Diablo haunting them unless 100 Burpees are some entwined into the Uptowner beatdowns. To this I say what ever it takes to file the slot. Take time this early new year to reflect on those areas of your life you want to change so to avoid the dreaded reflex of years past!

  • A VQ Begins a New Year – from Pool Boy

    Conditions: Wet and 58 degrees
5:27 am. With the football field and track completely flooded, I call an audible and change workout.

    Abe Vigoda
Arm circles – with clubbin included
    Imperial Walkers
    Side Straddle Hops

Sprint to gym: 75 squats and back to parking lot. Sprint to gym: 50 merkins and back to parking lot. Sprint to gym: 25 calf raises and back to parking lot.
With rock over head, indian walk to the gym and back to end of parking lot.
Mosey over to soaked baseball field. Individual rock toss/throw from one side of the field and back.
Mosey back to the rocks for Coolorama:
Abe Vigoda, imperial walkers, side straddle hops, Big Boy Sit ups, Peter Parkers.
Mayhem with the anticipation of his first Q Friday jumped in with:

Prayers for those in need and for a faith filled 2023.

  • Frac Had A Heart Attack! – from Charmin

YHC has been meaning to Q and to lead for a little while now so when I saw the Q sheet was empty for today I decided to grab it. I also had some songs in mind so I was itching to Q.

Warm o Rama with some of the regulars.

    SSH x 20
    IW x 20
    Hillbillies x 20
    Grass Grabbers x 15
    Peter Parkers x 10
    Parker Peters x 10

    Songs:

    The monkey and the rabbit

2 Monkey Humpers when you hear Monkey
2 Bunny Hops when you hear Rabbit
1 Good Morning when you hear Lion
    Seal Claps otherwise

    Contact by Phish
1 Burpee when you hear the Road (24 Total Burpees)
10 Burpees when you hear “it’s been towed”
    Morracan Night Clubs otherwise

    Dora
    67 Burpees
    200 Squats
    300 LBC’s
Timer is one person running to 50 yards and back

    Wave of Merkins
Circle up, get into plank position, first person does one merkin, then the next person to the right does a merkin, stay in plank position the entire time otherwise. Should look like a wave flowing around the circle, until you get back to the first person who then performs 2 merkins, repeat all the way up to 6 Merkins thanks to Mahatma’s encouragement.

Frac ended up having a “heart attack” at the end with ~5 minutes left. The pax, while realizing the situation was pretend, knew what to do. Kenner Brah understood the assignment a little too well but other than that I think we are mostly prepared incase someone has a heart attack.

We debriefed the situation in the COT.

  • One left alone makes a right! – from Mayhem

In 2 days we have the Eve before Christmas. Today is the Eve before the Big Freeze. It was tough getting out of bed, knowing what transpired the night before and what the Arctic Blast will bring the day following. Not wanting to let fellow PAX down I made the trek to AO Pontiff. Finding no one in sight and being a newbie (4th week, won’t forget the day I was an FNG, but I digress) I made the executive decision to run the regulate route in reverse in case PAX showed up along the way. None in sight. Stayed true to the routine.
    4.7 miles.
    Back at 6:15.
    Solo.
    No announcements. No intentions.
My first (default? fake?) Q? MAYBE more Qs to come in 2023?
Good luck with the weather fellow PAX.

    Title credit goes to @Hawgcycle!

(Hope I posted correct? Again… Newbie!)

  • 12 Days of Fitmas – from Bolt

9:00 pm Thursday night seeing an empty Q sheet, I decided to grab the Q as site Q but not via the sheet, figuring at that hour all the good pax were fast asleep and it was time for a Fitmas beatdown. Arriving about two minutes before Mahatma and announcing it would b Fitmas to which Mahatma grumbled something about, “if the site Q would…”
…my mind drifted away and YHC then asked for a show of hands for Fitmas with/out rocks and two of nine votes were FOR rocks—rocks it is! Off to the rock pile for warmup.
SSH (20), Abe SLOWgodas, IW, Nancy Kerrigan/Tanya Harding arm circles (forward/back, alternating single foot) chinooks, MNC (all 15x), self love (10); Toy soldiers, Hairy Rockettes (15x). Carry rocks to hill by dog park and perform reps equal to the day number followed by the previous days:
Day 1: Mosey across the hill with Rick back and forth as days are added
    Day 2: Diamond merkins
    Day3: Blockees
Day 4: Reverse Lunges (2:1, no coupon)
    Day 5: Squat Thrusters, coupon
    Day 6: Box Cutters
    Day 7: Tricep coupon presses
    Day 8: Plank Jacks
    Day 9: Overhead coupon presses
    Day 10: Big Boy sit-ups
    Day 11: Lying Block presses
    Day 12: Mtn. Climbers

My watch recorded a max heart rate of 179; I hope the other pax had similar results. Upon completion I was wet, muddy, oxygen deprived and honored for the chance to lead.

  • Special Ops – from Hawgcycle

Conditions: Partly Cloudy. 72 degrees. Humidity 92%. Wind 5 mph from the South

Pax: Boo, Buxton, Fast Tax, YHC, Hokie Don’t Call Me Pokie, Mayhem, Pool Party, PVC, Triple Shift

Arrived a few minutes early to find PVC warming up. I filled him in on the Special Ops Mission he would need to lead.

After giving the disclaimer I told Fast Tax and Triple to go with PVC. Given the look on Triple’s face, I’m pretty sure he believed he was getting the Black Tahoe. From his perspective it makes sense. I’m sure he feels he has been dangerously close for a while now. The Special Ops group headed right towards the Rock Pile. Boo, Buxton, Hoke, Mayhem, Pool Boy and YHC headed in the opposite direction.

Quick Mosey to the light pole on the south end of the park. Pretty sure I’ve never done a warm-up here. Hopefully Fast Tax will be glad to hear that I was mixing things up.

    Warm Up:

YHC used the warm-up to let some of our newer members practice leading in Cadence:
    • Pool Boy – SSH x 26
    • Mayhem – Imperial Walkers x 15
    • Buxton – Grass Grabbers x 15
    • Pool Boy – Peter Parkers x 20
    • Mayhem – Tempo Merkins x 20
    • Buxton – Low Slow Squats x 20

    The Thang

Continued around the path headed east and then North to the first baseball field. Divided up into two groups of three. Pax 1 did pull-ups on the bleachers, Pax 2 did merkins, Pax 3 was the timer with 5 burpees. Rinse and Repeat.

Back to the path, headed north where we joined up with our 3 Special Ops friends. That took longer than expected. Maybe they ran into resistance. Did they have words with Rudy’s Caterer? She’s never accosted us before, but it’s possible that Triple Shift said something to set her off.

Triple Shift: Hey what are you doing?
Rudy’s Caterer: I’m walking. I walk here every day. 78 laps.
Triple Shift: Your form is all wrong. Look at your hips. They’re all out of alignment.
Rudy’s Caterer: I do this every day. I’m fine
Triple Shift: You won’t be. Keep doing this and you might not ever walk again.
    Rudy’s Caterer: Hmmm….then I should do this now @$#%&#@!
At this point she jumps Triple, brings him to the ground and starts jumping repeatedly on his face as PVC and Fast Tax stand by in amusement.

…Or maybe our Special Ops are just slow. At any rate they joined on the levee for Clock
    Merkins
    • 6 o’clock (feet toward the top of levee, head toward the bottom) x 10
    • 9 o’clock x 10
    • 12 o’clock x 7
    • 2 o’clock x 6
    • 4:30 x 6

Continue our mosey around the track to the Hill. We had nine presents left to us by our Special Ops. I gave PVC very little instruction, but he did a good job (other than being slow as molasses). I was glad to see the variety of rocks and especially glad to that they brought Gibraltar.

11s – Start with 10 bench presses on the north side, carry the rock up and over to the south side and do a man-maker. Then 9 bench presses and 2 man-makers…..yadda, yadda, yadda…we did this for 10 minutes. YHC got to 5 bench presses and 6 man-makers.

At this point we had to hustle. YHC challenged the pax to get back to the rock pile before him. Boo succeeded. Drop of the rocks and Horses to the Stable back to the flag.

    NMM

    • Great job by Pool Boy, Mayhem, and Buxton during the warm-up. They all led like champs. Looking forward to some fresh Qs.
    • The Bleacher pull-ups were fraught with danger.
    • I concur with Hoke’s sentiments regarding the clock merkins.
    • It’s not really 11s unless it involves burpees or man-makers. It’s also not 11s if you don’t finish. That’s on me.
    • Don’t worry, Triple is as handsome as ever. His dust up with Rudy’s caterer left him none the worse.
    • Guys pushed hard at the end. So good seeing guys with their hands on their knees or in surrender cobra when we finish.

  • 12×12 – Animals on Parade – from Rudy

Typical December am at Rock City: foggy, warm, mosquitos. Good stuff. 7 PAX in the gloom expected Hawg to lead them, but alas they got Rudy instead. Mahatma could be heard audibly groaning, muttering “I shoulda gone to swolefest.” Disclaimer given, off to the rock pile. Lots of new-ish faces at Pontiff perhaps had no idea that they should expect better. Great to see Pool Boy bringing in the new faces – Buxton and Mayhem!

Warmup with SSH (Fast Tax insisted on doing them in opposite cadence. I think that was his protest against a Rudy-Q). Some Grass Grabbers, Abe Vigodas, Peter Parkers, Parker Peters. Grab a rock and head to the football field.

The Thing: YHC dug way back in the Backblast archives looking for inspiration. Found a Hawg Q from 2015 that served as the basis – animal walks and exercises. Modified to reflect the date (12/12) led to this:

Line up the rocks at about the 25 yard line. We’ve got 12 sets. Each set is an animal movement from the goal line to the rocks, then a set of 12 exercises, then return to the goal line.

Round 1: Bear Crawl with Thrusters
Round 2: Crab Walk with BBSU
Round 3: Duck Walk with Burpees (with a jump-over the rock)
Round 4: Inchworms with 8 Count Brick Builder
Round 5: Frog Jump with an unnamed combo – bench press, but the rock starts over your head
Round 6: Ape Walk with Lunge and Twist

Then we repeat, but with the animal walk reversed: Crawl Bear, Walk Crab, Walk Duck, Worm Inch (i guess?), Jump Frog and Walk Ape.

Ran out of time, so we didn’t get the last set of Lunge & Twists. Gotta get the rocks back to their home and return to the flag.

    Random Musings:
    * Mahatma and Fast Tax set the pace. By a healthy margin. I hope they got a lot out of the planking. Next time – they have to go 35 yards instead of 25 yards.
    * Great to see the new guys pushing through. Buxton in particular – never failed to actually sprint back to the goal line. All of us can learn by that example
    * War Eagle complained about the mosquitos. I mean, they were bad. But seriously?
    * But Kudos to War Eagle as well – finding a way to modify and push to accomodate an injured wrist. Way to keep moving!

  • Roaming around The playground – from PVC

On a cool crisp yet foggy full moon lit 65 degree morning 8 PAX converged for a Bootcamp in the gloom

Warmorama: squats, Abe vigoda, grass grabbbers, imperial walkers, hill billies, arm circles, Peter Parker’s

Mosey to gym wall for balls to wall, calf raises, donkey kicks (2 sets)

Mosey to pavilion for dips, BBS, step ups (2 sets)

Mosey to hill for bear crawl up n over, flutter kicks, lunge up n over, bear crawl up n over, flutter kicks

Mosey to rock pile shoulder press, bench press, squats (2 sets)

Mosey to football field for Coolorama:
squats, Abe vigoda, grass grabbbers, imperial walkers, hill billies

    COT
FNG Buxton was named after I recognized his name from our childhood neighborhood where we grew up

  • Wherefore Art Thou, Macgyver? – from Rudy

5:29:30 – 9 PAX in the gloom start to realize that our designated Q – who so so boldly announced his Q intentions to the world (or at least to slack) – was going to no-show. YHC looked around and saw Mahatma getting ready to claim the Q. As YHC has experienced the Mahatma Q, I spoke up and grabbed it just in the nick of time. I think I heard Mayhem whispering “Whew…”

BTW – Welcome back to the fold, Babyface! Great to see you in the gloom!!

With the disclaimer given, the PAX were off to the rock pile. Quick warmup with some SSH, IW and such. Gives YHC a few moments to formulate a plan – lets grab a rock and head to the football field.

Midway to the football field, YHC called an audible and stopped by the playground. 5 stations of Pull Ups, Merkins, Squat Thrusts, Burpees and LBCs. 2 rounds through, while TripleShift showed up just in the nick of time (i.e., 15 mins late).

Next up – off to the field. Start with a Dirty MacDeuce. We were short 1 rock, so whoever was rock-less for an exercise would just do burpees while everyone else exercised.

Round 1: Shoulder Press (mahatma drew the short straw). Then lunges and LBTs. 1 Lap.
Round 2: Curls (Triple got it), Slow Squats (Hand Gernada was burpeeing), Flutter Kicks. 1 more Lap

Mahatma had now had enough and demanded that a REAL Q step up. So Mahatma took over. All Day Baby! Everyone lift rocks overhead. We’re 1 short, though??? No big deal – 1 PAX to the middle for 5 burpees, then pass off a rock. Can the PAX keep the rocks overhead while we get through all 50 burpees? All PAX but 1 (“Rudy”) made it.

Line up for a Merkin Lineup. shoulder-to-shoulder, Lotsa merkins, side crawling, hand slapping fun.

    Creative stuff, Mahatma!

Return the rocks, some last Mary and back on our horses to get to the flag.

COT, Announcements and Prayers. Thanks to all for giving us the chance to lead!
