  • Dodging balls

The pax met up last Saturday on the lakefront and quickly moseyed to Lamarque st playground. (Almost to quickly as the sun wasn’t quite all the way up yet…so a warm up ensued to let the day break a little more). The pax the divided up into two teams to play a version of dodgeball called “pinball.” Pinball is a game that originated in the 6 the grade PE class of YHC. The object of the game is to try and knock the opposing teams pin (cone) over. Some F3 modifications were made to keep the game in constant motion and the recommended HR above 160. If one is tagged out with a ball, 25 SSH, 10 merkins, and 5 burpees were performed to allow re-entry into the game. Also, a team exercise is of choice was performed if the cone is knocked over…

The precise rules of the game were somewhat hazy, as the last time YHC played this game, he was wearing tight rolled jeans, a hyper colored shirt, and the new Bo Jackson sneakers from Nike.

The cone is supposed to be in the paint? You can’t guard the cone? You have to knock the cone over, not just hit the cone? Oh well, who cares… let’s just play…

A good time was had by all. The pax then moseyed back to the lakefront for COT, name o Rama and prayer.

Special prayers for mathlete and his family, especially for his younger brother as they heal from the loss of their father.

  • Tribute to Terabyte at the Mothership

F3 lost one of its own earlier in the week. Terabyte was a caring leader that pushed himself, and inspired other pax to become better. He will be missed.

YHC stated that we will carry a flag for our fallen pax as we trudged through the AO. We will sweat, push ourselves, and feel pain. In this way, we will honor him, ’cause that’s what we do. 40 men, including 3 FNG’s, were ready to go.

Brief disclaimer, then pick up the flag and mosey to the Great lawn for the warmup

Sprint to second tree and back – 5 burpees – plank and wait for the six

Starting at first tree, Burpee Broad Jump to third tree.

YHC requested Triple Shift to help explain the next exercise. Triple Shift had previously introduced the Genuflect and YHC wanted to incorporate it in. Genuflect from third tree back to first tree.
Left knee down, right knee down, left knee up, right knee up, then lunge walk one step. Now do two genuflects followed by two lunge steps, then three……etc.

Count off, Name-O-Rama, Announcement, and ended with a prayer.

Welcome Bingo Knight, Offsides, and CareBear! Great job on the EH’ing guys! We have had big numbers at the AO’s lately, let’s keep it going!

The Celebration of Life for Terabyte, aka Sidney Modica, will be held on Monday January 14th where visitation begins at 0900 with service to follow at 1030 at:
    Victory Fellowship
    5708 Airline Hwy

If you have a flag or a ruck sack, please bring. Terabyte loved being part of F3, and we loved having him.

  • Let’s MOSEY

With no World Cup Soccer themes or any other ideas for a “LOVE FEST Beatdown” dancing in my mind, YHC figured it would be a good time to work off some of those holiday calories that invariably crop up at this time of year.  So, with a big crowd (T-Claps guys) on the day before Christmas Adam, here’s more or less how it went down:

To get the blood flowing, we did a brief round of SSH, HK, and BK to warm up.  all IC x 15.

Mosey Eastward, Circle up for some harder hitting exercises before the main course.  Smurf Jacks IC x 20, Monkey Humpers IC x 20, Shooter’s Burpos OYO x 10.

Now it was time to MOSEY again, however, this time we went westward.  It was back to the corner of Marigny and Lakeshore Dr for some RACES…(Yes, Bushwacker, you heard that correctly).  YHC divided the PAX into two random groups, and each group took turns racing around the first block of Marigny St (around the circle).  While one group was running, the other group did a continuous exercise.  Rinse and repeat x 3.  The exercises were T-Merkins, Squats, Shoulder Taps.  After some pretty intense running, it was time to MOSEY again…this time we went Eastward, all the way to the PULL UP BARS beyond the outfield fence at Harbor Field.  And that distance may have been a little farther than YHC had remembered, as the PAX thinned to a barely connected group.  Once the PAX re-assembled, it was time for some pullups.  As each man did a set of up-to 5 pull ups (apologies to Zoolander and The Hammer, both of whom can clearly can pop out around 20), the remaining PAX did and exercise.  First it was Imperial Walker Squats, then it was Mack Taraji’s, and last it was, Flutter Kicks.  After 3 rounds, and some really cold hands, we MOSEYED back to the flag for a brief set of Mary.  COT, and YHC prayed us out.  Welcome to our FNG, One Eye.  Thanks for letting me take the lead today and pushing me to greater heights!

Barely Legal, Bolt, Bubba, Bushwacker, Coconuts, Garfield, Jose Mourinho, Mathlete, Maverick, One Eye (FNG), Shooter, Toto, The Hammer, THE Manny, Tanked Up!, Zoolander

  • Perfect Conditions

Cold wet and windy morning on the Mandeville Lakefront.  Perfect conditions to sharpen some iron.

Warmup of Imperial Walkers, Seal Jacks, Toe Touches, Lunges, SSHs and Windmills, all IC and 20x except for the Windmills at 10x.

Mosey Westward to the first COP, a rotisserie of sorts with three rounds on the wet ground.  Round one:  T hand release merkins, right side hip ups, left side hip ups, scuba Steves.  Round two:  shoulder taps, right side straight leg jackknives, left side straight leg jackknives, alternating Supermans.  Round three:  slow count merkins, right side Jane Fondas, left side Jane Fondas, and vintage Supermans. All IC and 10x each exercise.

Mosey further Westward to partner up and pick up some coupons.  10 minutes of every minute on the minute, rotating between coupon 10 thrusters and 20 donkey kicks with your partner.  50x thrusters and 100x donkey kicks total.

Then each team completed 50 coupon manmakers and 100 coupon swings, one partner putting in reps while the other ran 50 yards out and back to relieve his partner.

Last dance with your partner:  back to back Al Gore for a minute, then twisting coupon exchanges 1 minute each direction.  Waterpik, what were you doing over there by yourself?

Mosey Eastward towards the shovel flag for some sprint training.  Four cones spaced about 10 yards apart.  Accelerate from cone 1 to cone 2, float (maintain speed) from cone 2 to cone 3, and then accelerate from cone 3 to cone 4.  Recovery walk back to cone 1 to repeat; five total rounds.

Final mosey back to the shovel flag.  100 shoulder taps IC to wrap up the beat down.

Countorama, nameorama, Pledge of Allegiance in honor of Veterans Day, and Butt Splice prayed us out.

Thanks for letting me lead guys.  Always a privilege and an honor.  And great seeing so many of you post for the pre-thang foreplay run.  Let’s keep working towards Krazy Ivan dominance.  Recover quickly, Jose.

  • Convergence ’18

    f3nola.com/…/uploads/2018/10/IMG_5366.mov

In celebration of the 4 year Anniversary of the starting of F3 NOLA,  a Convergence was called at the site where it all started, the Mothership.  PAX from every AO in F3 NOLA; Northshore, Westbank, Kenner, Baton Rouge, Metairie, Mid-City, and Uptown, converged on City Park for a celebration of the past 4 years of Men growing in Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith, and the growth and success that F3 NOLA has experienced during that time.

Rudy got the party started early with a small group that arrived at 6:30 with a quick 5K Run through City Park; around the Festival Grounds, the Lagoon and back around to meet up with waiting PAX back near the Peristyle.  8 Flags were planted in the ground at the corner of The Great Lawn and the PAX slowly began to gather.  The Detailed Disclaimer(“You can’t sue us”) was given by Triple Shift, and off we moseyed to the large lawn near NOMA.

The Beat-down was divided into four 15 minute segments, each with a different Q taking an opportunity to lead.  Each Q was selected to represent each of the 4 years of F3’s existence.

1st Q – Triple Shift – Led off representing the founding group that started F3 NOLA that first year

2nd Q – Turbo Tax  – represented the 2nd year growth and addition of Northshore PAX to F3 NOLA.

3rd Q – FracSac – represented the third year and the growth of the Metairie, and Lakeview/Mid City AO’s

4th Q – Medulla Oblongata – YHC, represented the recent surge and growth Uptown by the recent “HNJ Invasion”

After a quick mosey to the lawn to the side of NOMA we circled up for the a warm up.

    20 – Plank Jacks

    20 – Peter Parkers

    15 – Merkins

The Q was passed to Turbo Tax who moved the Pax over to lawn slightly closer to NOMA.  Turbo started off by asking everyone to take off their shirt and create a “Flag” by tucking it in the back of your shorts.  This generated plenty of Mumble chatter among the Pax.

    FLAG GAMES

2 Minute Flag Games – Your shirt is your Flag, Don’t let it get pulled!

1st Round – 2 Knee-to-Chest Jumps every time your flag gets pulled, reload and continue  pulling after jumps.

2nd Round (x2) – Tennis Balls and a Nerf football were added as additional “Ammo”, In addition to Jumps for flag pulls, if hit with the tennis balls – 5 Merkins, hit by the football – 5 Burpees, reload flag and keep going after exercise.

3rd Round (x2) – Same Rules as 2nd round, but no reload of flag, perform penalty exercise, Plank and wait in place till end.

4th Round – Trophy Flags – Same rules as Round 3 but Flag puller keeps and collects flags he pulls, Person with the most flags wins.

Not sure if anyone kept track of the winners but as Turbo Tax said we’re all WINNERS!

The Q was then passed to FracSac.  We remained in place and lined up along the First Tree Line.

    SUICIDES

Run to tree 1 and back 5 Burpees

KimChi lost his Applewatch in the Chaos that was Flag Games so we lined up and Bear crawled to the 4th tree while looking for the watch.  Not found, but later found by KimChi behind the area we bear crawled.  Crisis averted!

The Q was passed to YHC and we moseyed back to the Great Lawn.

    CONVERGENCE CIRCUIT

8 stations had been designated around the perimeter of the Great Lawn with a Flag positioned in the Center. Each station was marked with a sheet of paper with the exercise for each station.  The Pax was divided into groups at each station.   The Bobby Hurley station would provide the count of 20 reps,  while every other station did AMRAP of their designated exercise.   At Halt, Everyone ran to middle of lawn to CONVERGE and partner up for 5 Patty Cake Merkins, then rotate clockwise to the next station.  PAX was instructed to pick a different partner each time they returned to the middle between stations.  The stations were:

    Bobby Hurley’s

    Merkins

    Mountain Climbers

    Plank Jacks

    Low Slow Squats

    Jump Lunges

    Dips

Monkey Humpers – (by the street, of course)

    NMM

We moseyed over to Morning Call  where a awesome spread of food awaited us.   Spinach Mushroom Egg Scramble, Bacon, Pork Loin, Bananas, Croissants, Bottled Water, and Iced Coffee.  Mike as usual took great care of us with plates and napkins and great service.  Rudy presented Mike with his honorary membership and a blue F3 NOLA shirt.   Some great F2 went down as we ate and drank our fill.  Big thank you to all who made it out for this awesome beat-down in the park.  Big thank you to everyone who organized and provided the food and drinks we enjoyed.  Finally, big thanks to Woz for documenting the whole event with pictures and video.   I know, I  speak for all the Q’s when I say, it was a pleasure to lead as always, and thanks for the opportunity to lead this great PAX.

Hope to see everyone and more next year!!  SYITG!!

  • Mandeville Zoo

It Always Seems Impossible Until It’s Done.

    -Nelson Mandella

It was this sentiment that was permeating the air like vapors of a scent distinctly from times gone by, whilst I was pondering the unlimited possibilities for Saturday at the Lakefront. It had YHC reminiscing about slightly less than a year ago when a freshly minted Bushwacker spent almost the entirety of the weekend beatdowns feeling pure misery and little faith in his ability to see the thing through to completion. It was only the strength that he absorbed from his F3 brothers, as if by osmosis, that allowed him to finish, realizing that impossible really was possible! The pain and misery faded and was quickly replaced by feelings of exuberance and satisfaction.

In an attempt to reignite and recapture that feeling, as well as spread it amongst the PAX, it was high time we returned to Animal Planet. In homage to our esteemed brother Butt Splice, who by sheer coincidence happened to grace us with his presence, our tickets were purchased, our bags were packed, and we prepared to go on a safari of sorts.

    WARM-O-RAMA

21s – SSH in cadence with reps 1-5 out loud and 6-21 in silence. After a failed 1st attempt, we hit 10 burpees. After a 2nd failed attempt, 50 LBCs

    High knees/Air presses –  simultaneously, IC x20

Annie – in plank, alternate “scrubbing the floor” with right or left hand

    Abe Vigodas – x10 IC

    THANG

QIC passed the baton to Barely Legal

After a brief westward mosey PAX circled up for…

    x20 IC:

Putins, LBCs, Freddy Mercurys, mountain climbers & very slow flutter kicks ( hence for to be known as Sputter Kicks)

Back to Bushwacker with a mosey to the nearest corner (perhaps LafayetteSt)

    Welcome to ANIMAL PLANET!

For the 1st block we bear crawled and finished with 10 burpees

2nd block we crab walked followed by 20 merkins

    (returning to lakefront)

3rd block was duck walk and 5 burpees

Last block was bunny hop with 10 merkins

    More from Barely Legal

The PAX headed back towards the shovel flag, but pulled up to the sea wall slightly short of said destination.

Aiken Legs was on BL’s agenda:

    R1 20 squats, 20 box jumps, 20 lunges

    R2 5 derkins, 20 squats, 20 box jumps, 5 derkins

    MARY

To be perfectly honest, YHC was so worn out and oxygen deprived at this point that I can only summon vague recollections of Peter Parkers before the golden dawning of glorious 7:30!

COT, FNGx2, Ocho closed out our sacramental sacrifice of blood and sweat with a prayer of appreciation for all that we are blessed with.

Many thanks to Barely Legal for bringing the pain, and to all the PAX for following our lead and embracing the suck!

  • Back to the Roots

Too many moons ago I did my last Q at the Mothership.  My last Q was based on a book I had read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  This time I wanted to focus on the roots of F3 a simple straight forward no frills beat-down.

    Announcements/Intentions/Prayer/Coffeteria/Bible Study

Welcome FNG – Quiche.  I think he was EH’d by the Wiz.

This work out paid subtle tribute to some of my favorite F3 beat downs.  First to Roots –   YHC was happy to see Roots make his way from Uptown and deliver the third shovel flag of the day.  My first workout was at the Birdcage with non other than OG Roots as the Q.  It was quiet, intense, and intimidating.  In other words it was awesome.  2nd to Douille –  who taught me that low plank Peter Parkers and Plank Jacks are possible (there were doubters today).   Finally to Maverick (somewhere on the Northshore) who previously took the pax to the pier for Jack Webs.  Thanks to last months ISI challenge I could complete 10 rounds this time.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

  • Memorial Day Murph

Growing up, Memorial Day represented the first weekend of summer.  This was the first time we would pack up the car, hitch up the boat, and head to Lake Norfork on the eastern side of the Ozarks; a ritual we would repeat every weekend until Labor Day.  I loved Memorial Day and hated Labor Day.  Labor Day represented the end of summer, the beginning of school, and the end of fun.  Made sense that a holiday celebrating work would represent all those terrible things.  Also appropriate, Memorial Day represented freedom.  School was out.  It was time to be care-free and head to the lake.  I had a good understanding that Memorial Day represented freedom, but I never considered the cost associated with that freedom.  And that is unfortunate, because that is what the holiday is really about.

So for Memorial Day 2018 F3 New Orleans did our best to recall the sacrifices made.  We, like many others around the nation, completed a Murph.  A Murph is a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 merkins, 300 squats and a 1 mile run, named in honor of Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy Seal who lost his life in Afghanistan.  I have feeling the real Murph didn’t modify his pull-ups as much as I did.  Oh and he wore a weighted vest through the whole thing.

    Naked Man Moleskin

Great showing by the Uptown and World Pax, coming together at City Park.  I was impressed.  Further confirmation that 0530 is the right time to workout on the weekdays:  November Project showed up at 0600 only to find us on the equipment.  It worked out though, mainly because the F3 Pax crushed this Murph.  We were all running our final mile by the time they needed the pull-up space.  Lucky for them, there was no showdown.  Also lucky for us Da Parish and Rudy were not around.  I’m certain they would have broken into song from West Side Story.

Impressive times by all.  I believe Mahatma and Gabrielle completed it in about 36 minutes. We finished with Mary, culminating in a 21 gun salute of the American Hammer.

Great way to start the week and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.  Thanks guys.

  • Wiggins, Mississippi F3 Workout???

Every year our local homeschool community goes to enjoy a bit of the outdoors at Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins, Mississippi.  It’s a great time where families can spend time outdoors and we can let the kids run wild in the woods without worrying.  This year, it was the weekend after Mardi Gras and the weather was not too cold for campfires but it was a great time to get together to hang out.  On Friday night, we had a scheduled weenie roast where all the families would be in attendance.  A perfect time to EH some fresh blood!  Unfortunately, I arrived late and couldn’t EH anyone for the planned Saturday workout but Mathlete and Babyface filled in with honors!

The next morning, I arrived at the levee which is twice the size of our beloved Okwata levee at 6:55 am and our shovel flag was already up.  Coupons (rocks) were ready to go.  I welcomed the two (2) FNGs and gave my disclaimer which was received with the “What the H@!# did I sign up for” look.

    WARMUP

Mosey across the top of the levee about 200 yards out and then headed back.  Did the standard SSH, Imperial Walkers, Windmills, Mountain Climbers, and Arm Circles.

    THE THANG

Partner up for a Coupon Dora!  PAX 1 carries the coupon down the hill and then walks back up the hill while PAX 2 does said exercise then flapjack.

    100 burpees, 200 ww2 situps and 300 air squats

After that epic event, we circled up for a Jack Webb and finished with a bunch of Mary

    CIRCLE OF TRUST

We closed out with naming our 2 FNGs and asked the Lord to help us be better fathers and husbands….especially that weekend!

Coffeeteria at a local donut shop and good times!  Thanks for letting me lead!
