  • Misty Morning after Mother’s Day – from Akbar

6 strong on a rainy gloom at the Marsh this morning. It’s great to see the numbers back up again, missing regulars Russo and Hogsbreath. YHC and the PAX needed some sweating after all seemed to eat too much while celebrating our Mom’s yesterday. So we retrieved the hidden, waterlogged blocks and got to work.

Warm up: SSH, Torso Twist, Peter Parkers, Grass Grabbers, Cherry Pickers, Arm Circles (front and back), & Imperial Walkers x 10-15 IC

The rain let up for a bit so we moseyed down Livingston a couple of blocks, stopping for Hillbillies IC x 15.

    Thang

Full body workout today accompanied by some classic rock tunes. 6 exercises, 1 rep each, add a rep each round

    · Alternating block merkin
    · Decline freak nasty
    · Block Curl
    · KB Swing
    · Shoulder Thrusts
    · Block Squat
    · WW2 Situp – Block holds feet, legs straight – right elbow to left knee, switcheroo

The tunes started out with House of the Rising Sun (which is my 6-year-olds favorite song), Janis Joplin, and Boston. YHC noted that unfortunately they do not make music like this anymore. The Alternating Block Merkin brought back memories (or nightmares) of the Iron Pax we did in the field with Murder Bunnies.

Finished up at 5:52 with each PAX getting up to 11-12 rounds in, and headed back to center court for some Mary

Tempo Merkins, Leg Raises, Heals to Heaven, Hands to Heals, LCB’s and Crunchy Frogs x10 IC

YHC prayed us out with intentions for Waterpik’s friend and thankfulness for us getting together today.

Thanks for letting me lead fella’s

  • #41 – from Cowbell

YHC was due to Q and after a couple days off from being out of town, wanted to bring some heat. YHC thought back to a workout that will forever be burned in his memory and that is Rudy’s “40” workout after his favorite band U2. It’s an awful terribly wonderful workout that I remember as a big #crowdpleaser. It involved the brutal Okwata levee and U2 music.

Well, The Gipper has no levees and doesnt know much U2, so we’ll leave that to Rudy.

So, modify we must, to a parking garage and The Dave Matthews Band. How convenient that YHC’s favorite band has a song named #41?!?

    It went like this:
Mosey to the middle deck of the parking garage for-
    Warm up

    Set 6: American hammers
    Set 7: wide merkins

  • Surveying New Territory – from Mobydick

Pax. BBQ, Turbo Tax, Barely Legal, Einstein, Cow Bell, Fletch, Akbar, Grover, Mobydick, Bean, ?

The Gipper has posted all over downtown Covington for years. Today was new territory. YHC chose to forego the usual warmup circle and took the PAX on a cross town drag and carry. America was laid out by intrepid bands of surveyors that drug chains for miles to measure and note land marks while hauling their gear. The 11 man PAX devided into 3 teams with one 35 lb concrete block per team. A long heavy chain lay stretched out on New Hampshire street. The thang was for each man in order drag the chain one length end for end. It took 11 men two pulls each to get to the gates of Bogue Falaya Park. Mean while each team had to keep up with the chain while team carrying the block over head and lunge walking the 4 blocks to the park.
Leaving the chain at the gate PAX with block still over head did a tour around the new pathway along the River and stoping at the benches for Derkins Squats Step ups and more Merkins with more lunge walking in between. The return to the Gipper dragging the chain. We must have made pretty good surveyors cause the end of the chain ended up right where it started.
Not a lot of cardio but YHC found a couple of missing muscles the next day

  • Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes – from Akbar

4 HIM showed at the Marsh, picking a great morning to be up so early. Cool temperatures, no mosquitos, and a non-running workout. YHC is still having a little foot pain, so blocks were on the menu. I know, it’s surprising.

  • A Family Affair – from Akbar

Yhc and Grover arrived at the Milestone Marsh 10 minutes early this gloom to a clear night, quarter moon, and 48 degrees. As Grover slept in the car waiting for go time, QIC walked around the AO stretching from the prior week of pain. As the clock got closer to 5:15, there was still no one in site. Most of us have been close to or experienced a no show, and the thoughts were swimming through at this time. But as the AO was perused, there were messages inscribed on the court in chalk: Work hard, work harder, strive, grind. Then Grover emerged from his nap and we got to work, a father/son beatdown that went like this:

    Construction:

Mosey down to the lakefront stopping at each street.

    Karaoke 30 Werkins

    Butt Kick 25 Merkins

    Skips 20 T Merkins

    High Knees 15 Cobra Merkins

    Mosey 10 T Merkins

    Mosey 5 Diamond Merkins

    Deconstruction

Mosey back to the Marsh stopping at each block for deconstructed burpees – starting at 7 and descending to 1

    Squats, merkins, groiners, squat jumps

    Mary: IC x 10 LBC’s, leg raises, E2k left, E2k right

    YHC prayed us out.

    Till next Gloom – Akbar

    Moleskin

YHC remembered the Q on the way to Grandmas in Hattiesburg Sunday and had to pivot quickly to get something in place. Just so happens this beatdown was the next one on my list. Modification was in store after a week of block beatdowns, intense shoulder work, and pruning 8 trees on Friday – but after a big Easter meal the modification would not happen. So more chest and shoulders it was.

  • Putting the new coupons to good use – from Waterpik

Grab a cinder block, crank out 50 reps of any exercise or combination of coupon exercises and mosey around the block. Rinse and repeat until the bell sounded. If this workout sounds familiar, it should. YHC led the PAX through the exact same beatdown about 3 weeks ago.

  • Building Blocks – from Shooter

Knowing that our coupons have never been tampered with at the Gipper, YHC planned a beatdown all around the blocks. Q has been absent on Wednesday the last two weeks, so it felt like the perfect setting to return to strength focus on this mild gloom. T👏🏼 to Barely Legal and Einstein staying committed to the prethang miler and the return of Bubba to the Gip… PAX swelled to 13 before long and 0600 had arrived for us to get started.

    Warmup:
10IC Arm circles (flapjack), Cherry pickers, Torso twist, Windmills, Grass grabbers and Imperial walkers.

    Thang
PAX converged at the coupon yard to grab from our selection of mixed weights of blocks. Really didn’t matter if one thought they had escaped the dense 35 pounder as they quickly learned the blocks would soon be mixed in our parking lot around the corner. On this Gloom all parties involved would get a touch of the varying weights not by choice but possibly by default of being the last to select in some cases right BB?
    💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
First the PAX stacked all the blocks at one end of the lot them formed an assembly line to move the blocks down the line. As each PAX finished with the last block he would flip one of 2 tires placed in the lot earlier 2x and then rotate to the other end of the line to return all the blocks to the original starting block. Once complete we duplicated accept this time keeping the blocks overhead as we passed down the assembly line. R/R with the tire completing 2 rounds of each.

FLORA 123 was next on the agenda.
    PAX partnered up for 100 (Merkins/Plank holds), 200 (LBCs/6”holds), 300 (Goblet squat/ Goblet hold).
    Example:
    100
P1 10x Merkin with feet on coupon P2 hold plank with feet on coupon.
    200
P1 20x LBCs with block on chest, P2 holding block above with 6” leg hold.
    300
P1 25x Goblet squats, P2 Goblet arm chair hold.

All about the Benjamin’s up next.
Split the PAX on opposite ends of the parking lot.
G1 completed 25 Curls for the girls while G2 25 Lunge walks across.
    Flapjack
    Next
G1 Overhead press 25 and G2 25 Lunge walks with Block.
    Flapjack

Returned our coupons to their resting place and finished with setting up for the farmers market.

Count off, announcements and thoughts and prayers to our brethren Toto and Hogsbreath!!

    YHC prayed out the PAX

Privileged to lead you men and would build with you anytime..

Thanks for the post and until the next Gloom 👍🏼👊🏼✌🏼!!!!

  • March On – from Einstein

    Short disclaimer …

    Warmup:
all 15xIC; side straddle hops, toe touch, imperial walkers, drew brees, knee highs, good mornings

    Mosey:
to the front of the Taj-Mahal, circle up around the flag-pole, for the MROF (Merkin Ring Of Fire)
all pax do a merkin then sidecrawl counter-clockwise, then repeat in the clockwise direction, with a set of ten jumps squats in between

    Mosey:
to the top level of the St. Tammany Parish Courthouse parking garage, line up and at each of the parking stripes, do a burpee (twenty five in total) then follow with a core exercise.
We repeated this sequence about six times, inserting a different challenge for the stripes

    Mosey:
back to the Gipper statue as time expires,
count-o-rama, Bushwacker leads us out with a prayer.

It’s always fun running around downtown Covington, and thanks guys for letting me lead today.

  • Building Blocks – from Akbar

Pax Grover, Maverick, Bruno, BBQ, Bean, Barely Legal, Moho, Fletch, Turbo, Moby Dick, Cowbell, Maverick, Tarheel, Akbar

14 strong at the Gipper on a chilly morn in the gloom. Actually, it felt more like 24 degrees after a few days near 80. What a great morning for a block party!

    WU SSH IC x 15

Torso Twist, Self-Love, Grass Grabbers, Butt Kicks IC x 10

    Thang

7 block exercises, complete 10 reps, .2m run to Beck and Call and back

Rinse and repeat, adding 1 rep per exercise for each round

    Manmakers

    Block Curls

    Block Squat

    Bicycle Block Press

    Kettle Block Swing

    Triceps Block extensions

    WW1 Situps

My count had Turbo in the lead with 17, all in all a brutal beatdown where most finished 5-7 rounds. Might need Bean to check my math, but that’s 531 to 756 reps per man in a 35 minute time span.

    Mary IC x 12

Hello Dolly, Heels to Heaven, Hands to Heals, Flutter Kicks, Leg Raises, LBC, Crunchy Frogs for Cowbell

Count, Name-o-rama, quick shout out to the Unitards RCR win

    QIC prayed us out

Well done guys, thanks for letting me lead

    SYITG – Akbar

    Naked Man Moleskin

It was great to have Bruno back with us again, and T-Claps for him coming out every time he’s in town – even if BBQ makes him

Great to have Moho back as well after learning last week that us old guys should probably not sprint, at least until we stretch for 15 minutes.

It’s always a crapshoot when picking out blocks at the Gipper, could get a 28 or 35 pounder. But those blocks were definitely waterlogged today!

As Cowbell noted on GroupMe – it did feel good to have the blocks out after all that running in Feb.

  • Minute Mania – from Shooter

Great showing at the Marsh following the month of RunCajunRun. Q planned a beatdown with minimum running this Gloom as I know many are wanting to rest the tread on their sneakers coming off an incredible month as mentioned by RY in his email.. YHC brought a companion (30 lbs Ruck plate) to the beatdown to inspire the PAX..

    Warmup
10IC Windmills, 15IC SSH, 20 IC Grass grabbers and 25IC Butt kicks.

    Thang
Wanting to bring back the premise of how the Marsh was formed YHC with phone in hand for the timer kept the PAX busy with multiple timed reps of exercises.

All exercises would be max reps for a minute. Split into 2 groups of 4 with pull-ups and swing tucks. F/J
Upon finishing PAX met on the sidewalk by the playground for Carolina dry docks and Sister Mary K/Catherine’s..
We then ran down to school and back.
Assembled at the court for the company of the ruck plate. Each PAX alternated running suicides with the plate for a min until each member completed a round. The rest of the men completed called exercise. Exercises included Mountain climbers, Peter Parker’s, Parker Peters, Shoulder taps, jump squats, Bobby Hurleys, Lunges and squats. Next up we took to our six for 3 rounds of chest press 5, 8 and 10 looking for the right number to complete in a min as the PAX completed LBCs passing along the plate.. Next up curls for the girls which proved inefficient in form with 10 and only getting through half of the PAX before the timer sang so we completed regardless. Then we were able to complete 10 shoulder presses while the PAX did overhead claps. We did SSH on a 2nd round of shoulder presses. With 8 mins remaining we completed a lap around the block returning for time for 20IC Crunchy frogs 🐸, because 360 on Saturday wasn’t enough. And ended with 20IC Flutter kicks…

Appreciate the great showing on a Monday, especially Backdraft making the decision to join instead of hitting that snooze 😴…

Let’s make sure we give Russo a similar showing at Grannies on Tuesday!!

    Until the next Gloom 👍🏼👊🏼✌🏼!!!
