  • The Mother of All Great Lawns

YHC made the trek on Friday to Wolf Pack Mountain to visit our neighbors of Uptown, which proved to be a serious beat down from 86, but you’ll need to see the back blast to find out more about that. While in the COT, Reluctant Yankee asked if anyone could take his Q at the Mothership the following day so he could run with other members of the NOLA Blue Ridge Relay Team.  YHC is impressed with the 12 men of NOLA committed to representing our region in the BRR, so YHC volunteered to take the Mothership.  Surely RY ran at least 8 miles right?

Upon arrival at the Mothership, YHC set some cones out on the Great Lawn. When planning is short, one has to dig into the treasure chest of goodies, and this would be a real gem! We planted a couple shovel flags, said our hello’s, had some good laughs, but then the clock hit 0630, which means only one thing…..give the disclaimer….and then…mosey to the Great lawn for….

    Warmup
    SSH IC x 31
    IW IC x 20
    Abe Vigodas IC x 10
    Sun Gods IC x 20 (10 fwd, 10 bwd)

    Plank-o-Rama (A Rudy Specialty)
    Peter Parker IC x 20
    Parker Peter IC x 20
    Plank Jacks IC x 20
    Mountain Climbers IC x 20

Short mosey to the cones set up in the shape of a basketball court for…

Suicides x 1 (just regular suicide sprints)
Suicides x 1 with 5 Burpees each time you make it back to the baseline

Now that the mumble chatter has been killed, time to team up. With 21 Pax, split into 3 man teams for…

    3 man Dora 123
    100 Burpees
    200 Merkins
    300 Squats
Pax 1 begins exercise, Pax 2 and 3 do suicide sprint. Upon completion, Pax 2 relieves Pax 1, then Pax 1 and 3 do suicide sprints. Upon completion, Pax 3 relieves Pax 2, then Pax 1 and 2 do suicide sprint. Continue until all exercises are completed cumulatively. Once your team is finished, continue suicide sprint until all Pax are complete.

Mosey about 20 feet away from the cones for a tribute to RY. Certainly all were expecting a DirtyMacDeuce with a RY Q, so YHC served one up!

This beat down was proof one doesn’t need to venture far to deliver a good beat down. It just takes a little creativity. We never left the Great Lawn!
The Pax had a scare at the COT. During the DMD, Woz and Snookie walked off for some water. Turns out Snookie wasn’t feeling good and Woz was watching him to make sure he was ok. At the COT, Snookie and Woz returned, where Snookie had some signs and symptoms of a potential heat related illness. This is where Cliff Notes and Rudy jumped into action, getting him to the Hospital to get him some medical attention. The last update YHC received was that he was doing much better. We pray that all is well. Thank you to Woz, Rudy, and Cliff Notes!

The return of Quick Draw (Kotter)! Glad to see you come back, Brother!

We had an FNG today EH’d by (who else?) Triple Shift. Keep ’em comin’ Brother! Our FNG is from Sacramento, and rode like Lance Armstrong from Houston to New Orleans. Welcome One Sac!

  • Track to the Foundry

YHC arrived at the Foundry AO a few minutes early, allowing for a sincere welcome to each Pax as they arrived.  One never knows how many will post at the Foundry, some weeks it’s a few, others it’s a pack.  This day we had 11 total, which is a great number.  0530 hit, time for the disclaimer.  During the disclaimer, YHC revisited the term “Whiskey Dicking”, which is basically the act of not doing something because it’s too hard.  The disclaimer is to modify to prevent injury, while pushing yourself beyond what you thought you could do.  YHC doesn’t see Whiskey Dicking as an issue in our ranks, but it is fun to say!  Give it a try!

Mosey to the track warm up area for the warm up

Thibodaux is back in town and has been posting at numerous AO’s. We always enjoy seeing him, and look forward to his next visit. On Saturday he is headed back to Shanghai, and we wish him a safe journey.
YHC looked back to find when the term Whiskey Dicking (verb) was first used in F3 Nola.  On 27 April, 2016, Tool led the beatdown at the Birdcage, and encouraging everyone to give 100%, he tossed out the term from the lexicon defined as “Half stepping through a workout or other event.  More generally, execution of anything without sufficient zeal.”  Well said!

Great looking group at the Foundry! Thanks for posting with me today!

  • Back to the Roots

Too many moons ago I did my last Q at the Mothership.  My last Q was based on a book I had read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  This time I wanted to focus on the roots of F3 a simple straight forward no frills beat-down.

Welcome FNG – Quiche.  I think he was EH’d by the Wiz.

This work out paid subtle tribute to some of my favorite F3 beat downs.  First to Roots –   YHC was happy to see Roots make his way from Uptown and deliver the third shovel flag of the day.  My first workout was at the Birdcage with non other than OG Roots as the Q.  It was quiet, intense, and intimidating.  In other words it was awesome.  2nd to Douille –  who taught me that low plank Peter Parkers and Plank Jacks are possible (there were doubters today).   Finally to Maverick (somewhere on the Northshore) who previously took the pax to the pier for Jack Webs.  Thanks to last months ISI challenge I could complete 10 rounds this time.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

  • Qing on the Fly

YHC pulled into City Park wondering who was the Q, so he checked his phone and realized he was up.

  • A Beat Down 2 Years in the the Making

When Jingle Vader said he would be out of town and needed someone to step up to Q, YHC realized this was roughly his two year F3 Anniversary, and agreed to take the reigns from the mighty JV.  YHC first posted on June 11, 2016 where Maverick was the Q, and it was a good one!  With two years under the belt, YHC figured he could deliver a good one.  Two FNG’s posted with us today, along with 20 Regulars.  After some odd discussions about circles and such (that’s Bogey and Rudy for ya), it was time for the disclaimer…….and then….

Mosey to the Great Lawn for the Warmup

    SSH IC x 31
    IW IC x 20
Sun Gods (Arms Circles) 10 fwd, 10 back
    Mountain Climbers IC x 20
    Peter Parker IC x 20
    Parker Peter IC x 20

Someone set up some cones on the Great Lawn, wonder who that was? YHC figured we could thank him later….

Well, since cones are set up to mirror a basketball court, roughly about 35 feet between cones, may as well put them to good use. Time for some:

    Suicides

    Part 1
sprint to one quarter line, sprint back and do 5 burpees
sprint to half line, sprint back and do 5 burpees
sprint to three quarter line, sprint back and do 5 burpees
sprint full court, sprint back and do 5 burpees

    Part 2
Same suicides, only 10 merkins each time the pax sprints back

    Part 3
    Bear crawl semi suicides
Bear crawl to one quarter line, complete 10 LBC’s, bear crawl back to base line and do 10 merkins
Bear crawl to half court line, 10 LBC’s, bear crawl back to base line for 10 merkins.

    Part 4
    Lunge Walk Suicides
Lunge walk to one quarter line, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.
Lunge walk to half court line, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.
Lunge walk to three quarter line, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.
Lunge walk full court, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.

Line up in two columns for an indian run to NOMA. Apparently YHC did not do a very good job of explaining this, but we all ran, and we made it, so all is good.

    Partner up for:

    Mini Dora 123 (for time)
Pax 1 runs from first tree, or tree zero, or whatever we call it now, to the fountain for 10 dip
Pax two does exercise until relieved. The count is cumulative.
    50 Burpees
    100 Squats
    150 Merkins

    Partner Derkins
Starting at the now infamous first tree
Pax 1 planks, while Pax 2 uses Pax 1 for 10 Derkins.
    Run to next tree, flapjack
    Run to next tree, flapjack
    Run to next tree, flapjack
    Run back to starting point
    That’s 20 derkins for each

    Circle up for Mary
    LBC IC x 30
    Flutter Kicks IC x 20
    Dying Cockroach IC x 20
    Penguins IC x 20

Thanks to all of you for continuing to post in support of F3. There is no doubt my life has changed for the better over the last two years, and I remain several pounds lighter. The daily beatdowns, the Capital Ruck, the Grow Ruck, the Gnarly Nutria, the ISI monthly challenges, and a plethora of other F2 CSAUP events have filled these last two years with incredible memories, and the experiences have improved my roll as a Father, a Husband, and a Friend.

  • Stomp #146

YHC arrived at the 146th running of the 610 Stomp to find not one, but two Kotters!  Welcome back Stubhub and Milkman!  Hope you’re here to stay!

YHC isn’t creative enough to do anything other than a run on a Tuesday, so instructions were given to run out for 20 minutes and back along the Bayou St John route.  Great run with Great F2!

Upon all arriving back at the shovel flag, YHC told all to “do some ‘merkins or something” while waiting for the 6.  Once all arrived, YHC figured he’s better get it organized, so we did the following:

    Merkin IC x 15

    Flutterkicks IC x 15

    Dying Cockroach IC x 15

Penguins IC x 15 (no cheating!)

    LBC’s IC x 15

  • Another NOTC 2 Miler in the Books

Great turnout this year for the NOTC 2 Miler in City Park!  F3 stepped up once again to co-sponsor one of the Summer Series races and we lucked out with good weather and some good F2 to boot.  The F3 tent looked sharp with the signage, flags, flyers, and even a fancy tablecloth…t-claps Gabrielle for the attention to detail!  We managed to get some EH-ing in pre-race and post race, as well as good visibility in general.

The Race:  Two miles through City Park.  Several PAX put it in high gear while a few others throttled back due to the aftermath of a Murph that morning.  T-claps for those out there with the 2.0’s, including Shorty running with his “shorty” in a stroller.  Lots of F3 regulars running as well as some occasional gloomers.

The Post-Race festivities:  The F3 tent was hopping with the distribution of Mango Freeze, so graciously donated by the fine folks that make it for Jazz Fest.  Since cute 11&12 yr old girls handing it out seemed way more appetizing than us sweaty dudes, we put a few of our 2.0’s to work.  T-claps to Da Parish for providing the snazzy bottled water to hand out, complements of his insurance business.  The crowds were also treated several other tents serving beer, jambalaya, snacks, and more.  The biceps got plenty loving with lots of 12oz curls.

The PAX that stuck around till the end were treated to some entertainment from a random, naturally-nawlins character, who is a former Marine and said he might show up in the gloom with us for some PT.

Thanks to those who contributed to the sponsorship collection.  We have funds left over that will most likely go towards the upcoming F3 Family Picnic on July 21.

A good time was had by all.  Visit runnotc.org for info on the next three Summer Series races and several other events.

  • Bridge Over Stagnant Waters

Leading 20+ men on Saturday beat-down is a tall order, so Your Humble Correspondent (YHC) needed to prepare. On the afternoon before the workout, my 9-year-old son and I took I bike ride to City Park to survey any hidden corners typically overlooked during Mothership workouts. Whenever the Pax moseys from the flag to the museum of art, the little hill of a bridge just after Morning Call is a nice little challenge, especially because we don’t have hills in New Orleans. But there’s too much traffic along that road to do a workout on. On my bike, YHC spied those foot bridges over the lagoon behind Morning Call and thought it might be a good spot to try something new. (At least, YHC hasn’t worked out there before.)

YHC showed up a few minutes before the workout was to begin, and there was already a healthy crowd there. A few stragglers joined in as the PAX moseyed to the Great Lawn. Let’s get started:

    • Arm circles – 10 forward, 10 back
    • Cross-legged windmills – 10
    • Then some stretching – Runners stretch, crouching and holding it for 10, knee circles, legs open with stretch forward, soles touching and stretch forward

    Warm ups

    • Hillbillies x20
    • Merkins x20 (maybe too fast a cadence)
    • Jump squats x20
    • Floyd Mayweather x20
    • Peter Parkers x20
    • SSH x20
    • 10 burpees on your own

    To the bridges

We did a Dora 123 where one partner runs over one bridge and returns over the second with some nice steps to climb up. Taps out and the other partner does the circuit. A combined exercise of:

    • 100 plank jacks
    • 200 toe-touches (from crab-walk position)
    • 300 mountain climbers

    To NOMA

After a moment of hydration at the museum, we partnered up again at the main fountain.

One partner bunny-hopped up the stairs, while the other partner did:

    • derkins
    • irkins
    • dips

…partners switching each time between bunny-hops and the exercises at the fountain. When we were done, rinse and repeat.

    At the trees

Short mosey to the field with the line of trees in front of NOMA.

    • Lunge walk (length of two trees)
    • 10 burpees on your own
    • Duck walk (length of two trees)
    • 10 burpees on your own

Mosey back to the Great Lawn

    Time for some Mary

    • Flutter kicks x20
    • American hammer x20
    • Hello Dolly x20
    • Crunchy rolls and crunchy roll step-ups (something from my martial arts practice) – on your own
    • Freddy Mercuries (I think) x 20

Times up! Back to the flag for name-a-rama where we named two FNGs: Calliope and Mary Lou. (Mary Lou’s leaving town anyway, so a silly name won’t haunt him for long.) Announcements, a prayer, and then some camaraderie at Morning Call.

  • Teamwork

Mosey over for a quick warm up in the great lawn.

    • 15x Plank Jacks IC
    • 20x Elevator Merkins IC
    • 20x Peter Parkers IC
    • 20x SSHs IC

Partner up for some Dora 1-2-3.

    1. 100 Burpees (at the Great Lawn)
    2. 200 Mayweathers (at NOMA)
    3. 300 Squats (NOMA neutral ground)

Mosey over to the refinery and split into 2 groups.

    1. Calf Raise Circuit (timer)
    2. 3x Pull ups, 5x Merkins/Squats AMRAP

Back to the flag, where we held the COT. Coffeteria and 3rd F (Q’d by Woz) was held after…great time!

    Moleskin

    MURPH at the Foundry…get some!

  • 21 Strong

After participating in the Tchoupitoulas Bar-A-Thon the night before with approximately a dozen other F3 Beer Champions, YHC did not want to get up and post, much less Q, at the Mothership.  However, the being held accountable part of the F3 creed sat front and center of my brain, right next to the hangover part.  YHC could not let my F3 brothers down.

YHC was eager to see how many other Bar-A-Thon patrons would post, but that thought quickly went away upon seeing Cruiser in attendance from Houston, aka New Orleans West according to Hawg.

With 4 shovel flags planted, YHC quietly set out some cones in the parking lot and returned to the group of 20 other men that had assembled.  The clock struck 0630, time for a disclaimer, which YHC did give contrary to what Triple Shift says……and mosey toward the Peristyle.  Some of the sprinklers were jetting out water on the already rain soaked Great lawn, so YHC was attempting to avoid it, but Rudy talked the Q into testing it.  So, circle up on the Great Lawn, but we wouldn’t be here long…..

    Warmup
    SSH IC x 31
    Hillbilly’s IC x 20
    Abe Vigodas IC x 10
    Peter Parker IC x 20
    Mountain Climber IC x 20
    Parker Peter IC x 20

Mosey to the strategically placed cones in the parking lot. Set up to mirror a basketball court, it was time for some suicides. Start at baseline, sprint to first line, sprint back and do exercise. Sprint to Half Court, sprint back and do exercise. Sprint to third line, sprint back and do exercise. Sprint full court, sprint back and do exercise. That’s one evolution.
First Evolution – 5 Burpees OYO upon returning to baseline each time.
Second Evolution – 5 Eight Count Body Builders IC upon returning to baseline each time.
Third Evolution – 5 Copperhead Squats IC upon returning to baseline each time.
Fourth Evolution – No exercises, just sprint to each line and back retrieving the cones.

    Mosey to trees near NOMA
Line up at the first tree, and bear crawl to third tree. Lunges IC x 10
Bear crawl from third tree to fifth tree. At this point, Rudy indicated a large pool of standing water near tree six that the Pax should engage. Looking back, YHC may have lost a great opportunity. Maybe next time…..
    Circle Up for Jack Webb
    1 merkin, 2 air presses
    2 merkin, 4 air presses
    You get the idea
    10 merkins, 20 air presses
Kong walk from fifth tree back to third tree, Squats IC x 10
Duck walk from third tree back to first tree, Monkey Humpers IC x 20

Mosey to the fountain by NOMA. The regular Cross Fitters were on the steps doing Burpees, which the Pax began to critique. YHC decided to stay off the steps this day, we don’t need a West Side Story BB……
RL Step Ups IC x 20
    Freak nasties IC x 20
LL Step Ups IC x 20

Mosey to the narrow strip of grass in front of NOMA and elbow plank up in two columns.
Pax Bridge Jumps. Last man jumps over each Pax and assumes plank position in the front. Each Pax does 3. Although there were two teams, there was no competition here, YHC just wanted to equally spread the suck around. Speaking of Suck…
Mosey back near the standing water that continued to call to Rudy for “The Suck”

Three minutes of the following exercise over and over again
    7 SSH
    7 Merkins
    7 Squat Jumps
The Pax said something about it being 6, but YHC stood his ground. This day would suck that much more…..
YHC lost count, so not sure how many rounds were completed.

Mosey back to the road in front of NOMA and line up in the two columns again for a two column Indian Run back to the Flags. Upon arriving at the flags with one minute to spare, YHC called a sudden change and directed all back to the Great Lawn for 10 Burpees OYO to seal the deal!
