  • Leave no Man Behind – from Heisenberg

Leave no man behind, but leave no man where you find him

Warm up in the Peristyle – Imperial Walkers, Grass Grabbers, Abe Vigoda, Peter Parkers, Parker Peters, Arm Circles, 8 Count Body Builders.
Leave No Man Behind – We separated into three groups. Group one carried the 80lb sand medicine ball (“Aponi”), 60lb sandbag (“Sandy”), and a 40lb sandbag (I didn’t catch the name) towards the Foundry. In contrast, the other two groups moseyed a certain distance, then performed three burpees and swept back to meet the group with the coupons. This was repeated as each group took turns carrying coupons or running/Burpees/sweeping the six until we arrived at the Foundry.

Foundry – keeping our groups, we had stations of merkins, pull-ups, lunges, and the timer of running to the walking path and performing three burpees. Those looking for additional work performed the timer with sandbags. We completed three rounds.

Tool Wall – using the one group carries and two groups sweep we moved to the tool wall for some calf work.

Great Lawn –Again, alternating groups with coupons, we moved from the Tool Wall to the Great Lawn for some mary and then back to the flag with a bit of time for some burpees.

COT – Welcome down range Carpool (Northshore, now Woodlands Tx) and Chick (San Antonio, now Chicago), and FNG Clouseau, and welcome back Kotter to Kimchi.

    Notes
Aponi (as suggested by ChatGPT) – “Aponi,” which means “butterfly” and is associated with healing and transformation in several Native American cultures. The name is often given to girls with the hope that they will grow up to become healers or medicine women.

TClaps to Mahatma for performing lunges with Aponi and KimChi for his triumphant return.

  • Burn that Turkey – from Fracsac

Saturday after Thanksgiving at the Mothership brought a 60 degree Misty feel to the AO. The attendance was light with 4 pax: Carpool Downrange from Houston, Spaulding, Cheetos and YHC, but that didn’t stop us from turning up the heat to burn off that Thanksgiving meal!

Warmup at the flag with regular stuff. Mosey to the peristyle with a stop at the truck to grab some toys:
    60 lb sandbag and rope

    Stations:

Burpees x 10 with sandbag (timer)

    Etc., etc

Two rounds of taking turns rolling the exercise die. Jump squats, derkins, American Hammer, Skaters, and burpees all came up.

  • Q Source – Grover’s Graduation – from Akbar

It was a rainy, gloomy morn with what looked like 5-6 PAX for the beatdown. But out of the
gloom came more Pax to help celebrate Grovers graduation. After Pixie Stix woke up from his nap, the count was 16 HIM. Great to have Hawgcycle and Carpool join us as well.

QIC was ready with the biggest Wiki ever, laminated for the rain, and reading glasses to boot. We went through the first half of the Q-Source, including Foundations, Q1, and Q2 – with beatdowns in between readings.

YHC will summarize and post the full content at the very end of the backblast if you want to read through it.

The Q Source is F3’s Leadership Philosophy and leadership manual, which supports the mission to invigorate male leadership in our communities.

Get Right, Live Right, Lead Right, and Live Right. ISI on the back right of the shovel and a F3 and Super Grover sticker on the front. A copy of the Q Source was given to him also on the way to Coffeeteria. Great fellowship and conversation as usual at the Book and the Bean with surprise arrivals of Amnesia and Slots.

Many thanks to Zoolander who had the shovel flag idea; for Shooter helping me put it together; and for the M who painted the flag.

Count, Name and Shooter prayed us out.

    Thanks for letting me lead!
    Til next gloom, Akbar

    —————————————————————————————————-
    FULL CONTENT

    FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES
Disruption: Disturbance of the Status Quo. A leader is a person who can influence people to do things that they would not have done otherwise. Leaders influence movement to advantage which causes disruption

Language: The Lexicon of Virtuous Leadership. Leadership is evolutionary, not revolutionary. Effective groups have a unique language

Group: A voluntary combination of two or more people. Man is by nature a Group-forming animal. 3 group types that must be led to advantage are Community, Organization, and Team. Dynamic teams are the heart of healthy communities and effective organizations

In the Leadership Development Process (LDP), great leaders develop new leaders. There are 4 steps: schooling, apprenticeship, opportunity, and failure

Preparedness: Get ready for the expected while being ready for the unexpected. The process of preparedness is deliberate and sequential. 4 quadrants: Get right, live right, lead right, and leave right

Q1: GET RIGHT is the Pursuit of Proper Alignment. There are 3 components – Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. FITNESS is a man’s right relationship with himself through physical fitness. Fitness is inward seeking. A man must get right before he can do anything else. To be able to help others, a man must first help himself.

DRP – Daily Red Pill – the daily commitment to accelerate Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. A man needs help to get right – to turn from amateur to pro.
To do that, we must master 3 things

King – Daily discipline of training the physical body. Fitness begins with the body and is maintained for reasons outside of ourselves. Fitness is best accelerated by running with faster men.

Queen – Daily discipline over what is put into the Body. Man does not stay fit through exercise alone. Weight control requires accountability. You cannot out King your Queen

Jester – The temptation of the flesh that hinders acceleration. Every man has his own personal Jester. The jester is a master liar – the jester and Virtue can coexist. Preparedness keeps the Jester at bay

FELLOWSHIP – a man’s healthy relationship with the people in his Concentrica, or closest circle. Fellowship is the outward seeking act of relational rhythm – and takes as much discipline and attention as it does to maintain physical fitness – if not more.

M – The transformational relationship between a man and his wife. The M is the most important relationship. Accelerating the M requires both skill and love

Shorties – the Sacrificial relationship between a man and his kids. A man gives everything he has for his kids. The IMPACT that a man has on his kids cannot be underestimated

Shield Lock – the horizontal relationship between men. Men Hunt best in a pack because we need someone to watch our six. Men recognize the advantage of mutual defense and lock shields together into a defensive wall to repel the invader. The shield lock must come together periodically to be effective.

Whetstone – The vertical relationship between Men. It’s man’s natural desire to pass on what we have learned to a younger man. A man must be sharpened like a knife blade. The HIM acts as the Stone to the younger man’s Blade – providing the hard surface against which he becomes sharper. The Whetstone is necessary for both the blade and the stone to get right.

Mammon – The sustaining relationship between a man and His work. Work is a virtue – Mammon is a relationship, not a pursuit. Mammon is a man’s least important relationship.

FAITH is a man’s right relationship with his Creator. A man cannot live, lead, or leave right unless this spiritual relationship is accelerating along with Fitness and Fellowship. This is done in 3 ways:

Prayer – The daily discipline of talking with the creator to build faith. A virtuous leader must have Faith. Prayer provides answers and is the antidote to worry.

Study – Faith is a practice that requires study to accelerate. The acceleration of Faith requires a belief system. Study puts a leaders belief system to the test. If you stop studying, you decelerate.

Meeting – Public manifestation of Faith. Faith is best accelerated in the company of others. To be competent in your Faith requires Skill, which results from practice. To leave a legacy, a man must be competent in the practice of his belief system – turning head knowledge into heart knowledge

Q2 LIVE RIGHT – THE DEDICATION TO PURPOSEFULNESS. To live right, a man must have an ultimate purpose in mind, which requires self-sacrifice & helps a man to stay right

Impact – Forcible contact to strong effect. Some movement – action taken in furtherance of Purpose – is required by at least 1 person. The proximity we create results in changes in the lives of the people that we meet. Sad Clown’s need help to Get Right, this can only be done in context of a relationship

Influence – igniting a strong desire for movement. Persuasion is the initiation of first movement, using influence to convince a man to want to move. Movement must be voluntary and is influenced through word and deed.

Missionality – Service in the High Impact Zone. The course of action taken to achieve an articulated purpose, which is made up of the tasks we undertake to bring our purpose to fruition. The comfort zone is a cultural myth that encourages men to be in-Effective. A HIM’s mission marks the boundaries of his high impact zone – his place of highest productivity, where he is the most effective. And preparedness helps resist straying from his mission

Positive Habit Transfer – ingraining advantageous tendencies in others. 3 types of habits – negative, neutral, positive. A Positive habit is advantageous to the individual or others. We should help others minimize neutral habits and discontinue negative habits.

Accountability – submission to a standard through enforcement and consequence. The HIM seeks accountability because his life is not his own. Accountability shines the light of Hope into a man’s blind spots. An effective shield lock provides mutual accountability.

Correction – zealously advocating for shared virtue. The HIM preaches what he practices. Correction requires courage and love.

Targeting – initiating Missionality in others. Missionality is an essential virtue. Targeting moves a man beyond himself. A man’s life is a single thing comprised of many components that must all work together in rhythm.

  • My Qs are Impetuous

    Conditions:  70 and light rain

Our curiosity had us gather near some type of Rock ‘n Roll Series race starting at the Peristyle.  Triple Shift said it started at 6:30. I think he was trying to get a free t-shirt and some post race pastries.  YHC gave a well thought out disclaimer and we headed toward NOMA

    The Thang

In the aforementioned disclaimer, YHC had warned the pax that we would attempt to get in some miles and that if a pax member was not interested in running miles they could peel off and join the Muscleship.  Apparently the Mothership pax came ready to run.

    Warm-up:  Hillbillies x 20; Low slow squats x 20; Merkins (IC) x 10; BTW

Foundry: The Democratic Convention – Pax 1 with a Bernies Sanders; Pax 2 holds Al Gore.  Flapjack when Pax 1 falls off the monkey bars.  Did roughly 3 rounds

Football Field:  Ten rounds of Tyson – Sprint 50 yards, do 10 reps of exercise, Sprint 50 yards, do 10 reps of exercise, Sprint 50 yards, do 10 reps of exercise, Sprint 50 yards.

    • Round 8 – Bonnie Blairs
    • Round 9 – Carolina Dry Docks
    • Round 10 – 8 Count Body Builders

    Hustle back to flag

    NMM

    • A lot of talk about the blistering 9:30 minute mosey pace we started with. My reputation for speed precedes me.
    • BTW was NSFW
    • All agreed that the greatness of the football field we used for 10 Rounds of Tyson was well worth the long run to get there (and back).
    • Ten Rounds of Tyson was introduced at the F3 NOLA launch by Chung-Li.  We did 5 rounds that day I think.  To my knowledge this was the first time that the full 10 rounds were completed in NOLA
    • I was afraid that some pax might quit on me if I called out burpees for Round 10.  The Body Builders were well received.
  • Turbo Charged

Many thanks to Turbo Tax for rallying the PAX to post this morning for a soggy beatdown at Grandmas House. YHC was grateful and honored to see some old friends and meet some new ones.  Anyway – to the beatdown – the good Lord brought the rain, but spared us the Thunder…. thankfully, AC/DC was there to fill the gap…

    Warmarama

SSHs through Thunderstruck, with a Burpee each time we hear “thunder!”

    To the Thang:

Mosey to Steve’s Bus Stop (missed seeing Mr. Hollywood. Hope LaLa land is treating you well)

    10 Freak Nasties

Thanks to Bushwacker for reminding us how blessed we are.  Grateful for the opportunity to lead.  Great seeing folks this morning.

    Happy Thanksgiving

  • Stop me if you’ve heard this before

Today marks year 3 of YHC’s F3 addiction.  Thanks to the brotherhood which has welcomed me, challenged me, improved me.  Its been a great ride, and one I look forward to for many more years.  I hope that in some small way, I’ve helped other F3 members in the same way that everyone around the Flag has helped me.

So – what better way to celebrate 3 years than by replaying the workout that first got me hooked on this.  Back before Hawg became a stoner, he was a thrust into the role of Emergency Q, as the Q for the morning of November 23rd, 2015 failed to show.  No, it was not “Shorty”.  It was a true and faithful brother of a slightly different height.

    Looking for Amnesty

In hindsight, I have no idea how I survived that workout.  As Mambi referred to his first workout – I would echo that description for mine: “From Couch to F3”.  But it hooked me, and set me on a path.

So here we are – November 19th, 2018.  Anniversary #3.  What did I do for the anniversary?  Uh, the same thing I did on November 23rd, 2015.  Same as I did on November 21st, 2016.  Same as I did on November 20th, 2017…  I’ve never been called “creative”.

Mosey to the Rock Pile!  Oh wait, an old-school Cowbell Special: 10 Burpees OYO before we get started

    Warm Up

SSH x5.  Then grab a rock.  Some muttering about how the warmup was as hard as Notre Dame’s schedule.  I will remember that comment, Rev-Sox.  But we’ve got to get busy.

    The Thang

The thang that hooked me.  The Lieutenant Dan.  Yes, Bogey – WITH A ROCK.  At the end of the tree line, start Lunging and Squatting until you get to the fence.  x2.  x4.  x6.  Must. Keep. Going.  That’s a loooong way to that fence.  When you get there, no rest for the weary!  Grab a People’s Chair on the fence while we wait on the 6.  Mix in some curls while waiting for Triple Shift to finish hauling the largest rock ever seen.

Once everyone gathered at the fence, it was time to give the legs a breather.  What better way to rest the legs than with The Jack Webb.  Yes, Amnesty – WITH A ROCK.  Merkins (one arm on the rock), Rock Presses.  1x/2x.  2x/4x.  Up to 8x/16x.  Hand Grenada 20 count, please!

Circle up for some Mary.  One group of 4 PAX scoot over to the playground.  Everone get in a solid 10 Pull Ups, with spotting if needed.  Then hurry back.  Rest of the PAX are doing Mary.

    • Dying Cockroaches while PAX group 1 followed King Kong’s slow mosey return, hanging us out to dry.  31.  32.  33.  34……
    • Hello Dolly for PAX group 2, who seemed to understand that they should try and move a bit faster.
    • Leg Raises for PAX group 3
    • Flutter Kicks for PAX group 4

Time to start moseying back.  And by Moseying back, I meant The Lieutenant Dan.  Yup, go the other way down the field.  Same as the first time.  Only Al Gore at the end.  Thanks, Kuch, for explaining the Al Gore to Momma and Dem.  “You see, you’re hugging a tree.  A tree hugger.  Get it?  Get it?”  As we again waited on Triple Shift, the PAX were given the choice of modifying the Al Gore: do it with your rock, or do it like Rudy (sans Rock).  Bogey tried with a rock for about 10 seconds, then decided he’d rather be like Rudy.  Good choice!

Next up – another Hawg special from my second week: the Bloom Where You Are Planted.  Grab your rock.  The goal is to NOT PUT IT DOWN.

    • Shoulder Press, Curl, Row, Squat, Bench Press x12
    • Repeat x10
    • Repeat x8

Time to return.  But Mambi wanted more – so one more Shoulder Press x6, just for you.  Now return the rocks and head back to the flag.

Back at the Flag, PAX did 10 more OYO burpees, just because Rev-Sox thought we needed a bit more from the workout.

Count Off, Name-o-Rama, Announcements, Intentions and circle up for the sweaty Circle of Trust.  Thank you all for what you’ve given me.  And thanks for the opportunity to lead again.

  • El Cinco de Dolor y Miseria

Well, as they say… that happened.  The FBI physical fitness test pre-thang Q’d by Grundy started promptly at 0545 as promised, but it would require a prodding Bushwacker to keep this thing on schedule.  You see, until this morning, none of us (least of all Grundy) realized just how patriotic our lakefront residents were.  After knocking out as many sit-ups as possible in a minute, we slow-moseyed down the street looking for Grundy’s starting line… “a bench lined up with an American flag.”  Turns out there are a lot of American flags, and a bunch of benches out there.  A bit of confused back and forth and finally, worried about respecting the time, Wacker just took off on the 300 meter sprint.  The rest of the PAX quickly followed.

T-claps to Grundy who got us out there, and to those men who got up early to complete the PFT: 1 minute of sit-ups, 300 m sprint, max out on merkins, 1.5 miles in less that 12:50.  YHC would call out each man individually, but the fog of being thoroughly beaten has settled in, and it’s a miracle I even remembered the 20 PAX who posted today.   Not sure who passed and who failed, but all men did admirably and with all the turnover going on at the Bureau these days, it’s a good thing they’ve got some young men like Grundy coming in.

So yeah – 20 PAX this morning!  All the EH’ing and warm weather is paying off.  FNG’s are rolling in each week and that’s got the rest of us posting more regularly and upping our game.  Speaking of upping our game – YHC had sincerely thought last night about doing… well, not an easy beatdown, but maybe a more mild one?  But nah…

Alright, enough rambling, here’s what went down:

Warmorama: Toe Touches, Imperial Walkers, Seal Jacks, SSH, Butt Kicks, High Knees, Mountain Climbers, Plank Jacks.  All 20x IC.

    The Thang:

Mosey west for a COP: 20x IC side to side plank hops, plank jacks, partner up for jump overs (20 OYO), in-out jump squats, and everyone’s favorite, monkey humpers.

Ei said it best when he noted, “Well, now that we’ve embarrassed ourselves there…” onto the next location!  Mosey to the loading dock for what I knew would be a real crowd pleaser: burpees down the street!  More mumbling from Bushwacker (you really can’t be fasting that much with all today’s chatter), trying to tell me that I can’t eat an elephant one spoonful at a time, or some such nonsense.

Because there were so many men this morning, YHC decided we’d partner up and P1 would hold plank while P2 burpee’d down the street.  It goes like this: burpee with the standard 1 merkin, but on the jump up do a broad jump forward.  2nd burpee has 2 merkins, followed by 2 broad jumps, 3 x 3, and so on, down the road.  It was fun.  Even better than I imagined on paper.

At about this time a few 10 counts were needed (in espanol for Cinco de Mayo), and then we moved over to the playground for a few stations.

P1 holds a wall sit and does air presses while P2 hits the three padded stations: Sister Mary Katherine’s x15, hand-release merkins, and LBC’s, all single-count x15.  After 2 reps each, P1 does heels to heaven while P2 hits the stations, flapjack, 2 reps each.

Next up, formed two lines to indian run back to the flag.  Finish up with Hello Dolly’s x25 IC.

Countdown, nameorama, naming of our two FNG’s  (welcome Doolittle and Vel-Vito!!), and Splice prayed us out.  The only thing that would make this beatdown more complete would be a drive-by from Choppa…

On to the Coffetería, which looked to have a little more action than usual with the table dancing, but you’ll have to check the groupme for that report.  A sincere thanks to this great group of men – despite my body’s response, YHC had a great time out there this morning.  Keep posting, keep the FNG’s coming, and hey, let’s try to get some of our missing comrades (ahem, Turtle and Bubba) back in action.  See you guys out there.

EDIT: One (hopefully) final edit on this unusually long backblast: this was likely Carpool’s final posting as a Northshore resident.  As his family makes the trek over to the Woodlands, we wish them nothing but the best.  He’s been a great addition to the F3 family over here, and Houston will be lucky to have him.  Stay tuned for info on Carpool’s Woodlands launch (potentially mid-July?), would be great if a couple of us could make it out there to support him.

  • An easy beatdown

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”
“The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe 100 percent.”
“It’s simple, if it jiggles, it’s fat.”
“Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer.”
“The best activities for your health are pumping and humping.”
