  • Spartan Redux Adieu

After finishing the Spartan Super in Alabama last Saturday, I had a great deal to be thankful for. Although I didn’t train enough for the mileage and obstacles, the base of fitness that I gained through F3 was exceptional. Given that most of the beatdowns are 45 – 60 minutes, I was surprised at how well Hokie Pokey, Fracsac and I did for this grueling race. 8.5 miles and 25 obstacles. We all missed at least 6 obstacles and which comes with a pleasant 30 burpee penalty. That’s right, 180 burpees for me and I believe 240 burpees for Fracsac and Hokie Pokey. Although, on paper, it seems impossible, we were all thankful for the F3 NOLA Pax that kept us accountable in our training.

    THE THANG

No warmup, just grab a rock and three (3) water buckets (35 lbs) and proceed around the park on the path. We walk briskly around the park and do a series of exercises at random intervals.

30 SSH IC, 30 Mountain Climbers IC, Lunge Walk x 2 on the ramp by the baseball stadium, 30 Burpees, a flow exercise to stretch our hip flexors in a lunge position and the bottom, mid and top floor elevator. As we get back to the rock pile, you guesed it….30 burpees and 15 Red Sun / Yellow Sun Supermans IC.

Countoff, Namerama and COT. Encouraged to see all the new Qs leading and I encouraged the four PAX members (Fast Tax, Scantron, Vanilla and Grimace) who haven’t Qed a workout to plan on it in the near future.

  • One Last Winter Morn

8 Pax. Upper 40s. Dry. Still winter at the time of the workout.

Mahatma was kind enough to allow YHC to take the Q this morning, since I missed my recent Q at Popeye’s. After a disclaimer warning the pax (especially those from Uptown) about the diverse wildlife roaming the park, we headed toward the jogging track on the north end. We gave hurried instructions to Mahatma as he rolled in hot and eventually circled up in the NE corner

    Warm-up
    • SSH x 20 – Rev Sox noticed a tempo change at the end
    • Peter Parker x 33
    • Imperial Walkers x 25
    • Merkins x 10 – tried to keep it nice and slow.
    The Thang

1st Soccer Field (burpees for the six) – Bear Crawl length (120 yards) Sprint back (100 yards)

    SE corner (planks for the six) – 10! (10 merkins, 10 Squats, 10 WWII Sit-ups, 9 merkins, 9 squats…)

Southside – lunges for the six

Outdoor Gym (planks for the six) – 8 Stations. 45 seconds with 15 second rest

    • Burpees
    • Dips
    • Squats (T-claps to War Eagle for pointing out the deficiencies in my form) #TShiftEffect
    • Flexed Arm to Dead Hang
    • Box Jumps
    • Flexed Arm to Dead Hang
    • Dying Cockroaches
    • Flexed Arm to Dead Hang

Mosey back toward the flag and circle up for Mary (LBCs for the six)

    • Flutter Kicks x 20
    • Keep the feet off the ground
    • Hello Dolly x 15
    • Keep the feet off the ground
    • Flutter Kicks x 10
    • Keep the feet off the ground
    NMM
    • T-claps to Darkwing Duck on his second post.
    • T-claps to JV for finding Lafreniere Park. We were shocked to learn that this was not only his first trip to this AO, but his first trip to the park. #ClassicUptowner
    • T-claps to Triple for completing the Spartan this weekend and continuing to post
    • I didn’t notice nearly as many feral cats this time, but did see a nutria, one roster, and 3 geese. Minimal amount of wildlife today.
    • There seemed to be some mumblechatter concerning the length of the bear crawl, but the pax pushed through and performed admirably.
    • When I visited San Antonio they kept they did not let their feet touch the ground during Mary. I thought implementing this idea was good, but it seemed to meet some resistance, as in most everyone’s feet hit the ground. Maybe I didn’t explain the idea well enough. We were on concrete so maybe concrete was considered ok? Not sure. There were also a few pax complaining about the weight of their shoes. That has a simple solution.
    • Much prayer for those facing cancer.
  • Don’t Say B.O.M.B.S in an airplane…

But saying B.O.M.B.S at Popeyes means a great beatdown.

    Warm-Up

    Hillbillies X 20

    Mountain Climbers X 20

    SSH X 20

    Peter Parker X 20

    Arm Circles X  20 (10 forward, 10 backwards)

    Abe Vigodas X 10

    The Thang

Today, YHC decided to consult the F3 Exicon for an optimal beatdown. The best beatdowns are those where you are intentionally pushed by the man beside you so partner up for B.O.M.B.S.

As a group/pair complete the following:

    Burpees X 50

    Overhand Claps X 100

    Merkins X 150

    Big Boy Sit-Ups X 200

    Squats X 250

1st PAX runs to the corner of the walking path while the 2nd PAX works on the exercises.

Two observations from Popeyes this morning. First, at some point during a week Rev Sox must complain about a workout–today was that day. Second, Popeyes is the only AO where a real chicken may join the workout. They are friendly, resilient, and completely harmess so just keep working.

    Post-Thang

Mosey to the wall at the entrance of the dog park.

    Dips X 25 in cadence

    Irkins X 20 OYO

    Dips X 15 in cadence

    Irkins X 10 OYO

    Mosey Back to the Flag

    Counterama

Namerama – Welcome FNG – Darkwing Duck (He is a private investigator by trade.)

    COT

    -prayers for those fighting cancer

As always, it was a pleasure to lead. SYITG.

  • 43 going on 44

23 PAX posted in the the dark at Rock City. The effects of the time change were felt as I tried to wake up and get ready to make the trek to Metairie. • RED Friday – The Crouch

Today’s RED Friday was in honor of Cpl. William Crouch from Zachary, LA. Cpl. Crouch was killed by a roadside bomb in June of 2007 in Hadid, Iraq. He was a Calvary Scout for the 2nd Squadron, 1st Calvary Regiment of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division of the United States Army.

Cpl. Crouch was a sci-fi fan so we did Imperial Squat Walkers and Peter Parkers. He enjoyed kickboxing so we did Chuck Norrises, Floyd Mayweathers, and Donkey Kicks. He was in the Army so we did WWII sit-ups.

We book-ended these exercises with burpees because they are hard. Cpl. Crouch had many normal interest. In addition to sci-fi movies and kickboxing, he enjoyed pizza and hanging out with close friends. But one thing set him apart and that was his decision to do the hard thing and serve our country. He lost his father at 13. His father was a policeman and Cpl. Crouch wanted to honor him by joining the military. This was not an easy way to honor his father. It was hard and that is what he chose to do.

We started each round with a 400 meter run, since as a Calvary Scout, it was his job to run recon ahead of his fellow men. We did 21 reps of each exercises as a reminder that he gave his life at the young age of 21.

    The Thang
    • 400m run
    • Burpees x 21
    • Imperial Squat Walkers x 21 (2 is 1)
    • Peter Parkers x 21 (2 is 1)
    • Chuck Norrises x 21
    • Floyd Mayweathers x 21 (2 is 1)
    • Donkey Kicks x 21
    • WWII sit-ups x 21
    • Burpees x 21

We stuck together and made it through 3 rounds. Scantron sealed the deal for us by leading us in 15 dying cockroaches

    Naked Man Moleskin
    • One of the great things about Pontiff Playground is that it serves as a flood control reservoir for the surrounding neighborhood. This means that it gets sloppy when it rains. Not sure if you have noticed, but it has been raining a lot lately. Conditions were perfect this morning for testing our physical and mental toughness by getting down and dirty and really wet. Just one of the reasons why F3 is so much better than other workouts.
    • T-claps to Scantron for leading us in a little Mary at a moment’s notice. He did a great job.
    • 126 burpees. Good work.
    • A few of us got in some post workout isometric exercises as we pushed in vain against Mahatma’s truck trying to free it from the hole of mud it had succumbed to. One by one we all left Mahatma on his own to figure it out. Within 10 minutes, he had it freed on his own.
  • King Kong Escaped Audubon and Found His Way to Rock City

Filled with excitement, YHC grabbed his passport this morning and went on a Metry field trip to Q his very first Rock City. YHC got to the AO about 15 minutes early and spotted Kuch, YourMomandDem, High Rise, and Abacus getting a head start by running a lap around the park to get some miles for the Run Ranger Run. T-claps for that!!! 22 strong Pax showed up on a cool, dry, windy Monday. YHC gave his standard disclaimer and told the Pax to mosey to the rocks, to pick up a decent size rock and mosey straight to the middle of the football field. Mumblechatter from Rudy telling YHC that Metry folks don’t lift up the rocks before warm-ups. Well… too bad. Off went the Pax.

    Warm-ups

Circled up in the middle of the football field and did the following in cadence

    SSHs x 20

    Windmills x 10

Hill Billies x 20 (YHC was trying to stay focus with his cadence count while Rudy was doing Imperial Walkers instead. Rudy claimed that Pax in Metry don’t do Hill Billies.)

    Seal Jacks x 20

    The Thang

Pax lined up in the middle of the football field with their rocks facing the field goal. Pax did the following exercises in the following sequences without stopping except in the middle of the workout where Mahatma gave us a 20 count.

Moseyed toward the field goal and performed 10 slow merkins IC.

Moseyed back to the middle to the rocks and performed 10 manmakers OYO.

Moseyed toward the other field goal and performed 20 plankjacks IC.

Ran back to the middle and performed 15 low slow squats with the rock IC.

Ran back toward the field goal and did 10 Cat Wine Mixer IC.

Ran back to the middle and performed 15 thrusters OYO.

Jogged toward the other field goal and did 20 Peter Parker IC.

Jogged back to the middle and did 15 rows IC

Jogged to the field goal and did 10 genuflects IC x 2 (10 on each leg).

Moseyed back to the middle and muscled up another 10 manmakers OYO.

Moseyed toward the other field goal and did 20 Parker Peter IC.

Moseyed back to the middle and did 20 chest press IC. (With a serious tone, Mahatma said to the Q “lets do 100 of these,” and YHC knew that was not going to happen.)

Ran to the field goal and did 15 lunges IC.

Ran back toward the middle and muscled up another 15 thrusters OYO.

Ran to the other field goal and lined up by the goal posts and bear crawled back to the middle and ended with last 10 manmakers OYO.

To sum up the workout, Pax did 20 merkins, 30 manmakers, 30 thrusters, 40 plank jacks, 40 Peter Parkers, 40 Parker Peters, 15 low slow squats with the rock, 30 rows, 40 chest presses, 10 Cat. Wine Mixers, 20 Genuflects, 30 lunges, and about 1.6 miles of running in between.

    Round of Mary

Everyone stayed in the middle of the football field and did the following exercises in cadence:

    LBCs x 20

    Flutterkicks x 15

    Hello Dolly x 15

    Dying Cockroach x 20

Brought our beloved rocks back to their home and moseyed to the flag. While waiting for the Six, Pax planked and did 5 Nolan Ryan IC on each side.

    COT

Ended the day with Count O Rama, Name O Rama, announcements and intentions. No FNGs. We prayed for all the mentioned intentions and also a safe Mardi Gras season for all of us. YHC is very grateful to be able to lead the workout. Always an honor to workout with my F3 brothers. Thank You for accepting an Uptowner at a Metry AO. SYITG.

  • Get Your Kicks On Route 66

The notice came in late Tuesday evening on Mummblechatter that a Q was needed for the newest AO — Popeye’s. YHC graciously volunteered for the opportunity to lead the PAX. The forcast late Tuesday said there was a 70% chance of rain. What do they know? Fear of the flu had some Sad Clowns bailing out on the fun before it even began. YHC thought what a solo workout would look like–not expecting 7 PAX to post this fine morning.

Lafreniere Park is an endless opportunity for fun. Thoughts of the hills, the running track, and the workout equipment all raced through YHC head on the ride over. “Maybe 11s over the hills” “Maybe a run around the track” “Maybe some fun on the monkey bars” and if it rains “Maybe a full workout under the gazebo.” The conclusion…who am I kidding…let’s make this up as we go.

    DISCLAIMER

I’m War Eagle. It’s dark. Be carful. Push yourself, don’t hurt yourself.

Then Cruiser (from F3Houston) noted that I was not a professional trainer.

    WARM-UP

Mosey around the gazebo and over the bridge.

    Hillbillies X 20

    SSH X 25

    Peter Parkers X 20

Arm Circles 10 forward, 10 backwards

    THANG 1

Mosey from the warm up area to the nearest walking path. Route 66 squats at each light poll until we arrived at the east side of the park. It became Route 55 (only ten light polls).

    THANG 2

We finished squats on the east side of the park walking track. We moseyed north on the walking track until we arrived at the first light poll.

    Route 66 – Merkins

Completed the 11th light poll right in front of the dog park where they had conveniently placed a brick wall.

    THANG 3

    Channing Tatums X 20

    Dips X 15

    Tatum Channings X 20

    Irkins X 20

    Derkins X 10

    THANG 4

Indian Run to the workout area on the north side of the park for shoulder work.

    Shoulder taps X 10

    Rocky Balboa X 10

Right Side Plank X 10 seconds

Left Side Plank X 10 Seconds

Mosey to the next light poll

    THANG 5

    Rout 66 – Jump Squats

    THANG 6

At this point, the PAX asked, “Where are we going?” YHC couldn’t handle the lie any longer. “Guys, I am completely making this up as I go.”

Mambi suggests heading back to the workout area for some Mary.

Right after that my official Team Mothership RunRangerRun Apple Watch informed me we had hit the two-mile mark on our excursion. Team Rock City members were adamant that we were only at 1.5 miles. Suggestions for cheating and asterisks were suggested, but we all know the truth.

COT – Count off, Name O, Intentions, Prayer of Thanksgiving.

  • The Three Caballeros

    The Three Caballeros

Three Pax came out in the gloom on a comfortable Wednesday morning for a beatdown. The Pax was dressed in hoodies and jackets like they were at an F3 in Michigan or Ohio, but this is the South so the layers of clothes were quickly discarded as the Pax made our way around LaFreniere on this beautiful southern 50 degree morning.

    The Warm-up

The Pax moseyed from the flag to the large gazebo in the middle of the park for a standard warm-up routine.

SSH – 27 (it’ll be 28 in October when the Yanks win another title, at least this is what War Eagle told me)

    Hillbillies – 20

    Michael Phelps – 20

    Smurf jacks – 20

    Rocky Balboas – 20

    Imperial Walkers – 20

    The Thang

The Pax moseyed around the pond and stopped at some open grass for a series of plank exercises when they were encouraged to hold the plank the entire time.

    Merkins – 20

    Plank Jacks – 20

    Annies – 20

    Nolan Ryans – 10

Stay in plank for a low hold and then a high hold

The Pax continued their mosey around the pond to the exercise equipment on the Napoleon side of the park and only to discover that some nice man set up cones on the lawn, although the line wasn’t straight they would make for wonderful suicides!

The Pax ran a standard suicide and then went to the equipment for a trip across the monkey bars ending with 3 pull-ups and then a rotation of incline merkins, step-ups, and hanging leg raises. 15 merkins was the count.

The Pax repeated the same routine but this time the suicides were animal suicides. We moved down to each cone with a bear crawl, followed by forward a crab walk, then a booboo baby bear crawl, and finally a reverse crab walk.

After two rounds of suicides and exercises, the Pax ran one more standard suicide and grabbed the cones before running back to the flag.

    Mary

    O Dolly – 15

    Hello Dolly – 15

    Wife Pleasers – 20

    The End

Count-off, Name-o-rama, prayer…we tried to EH a fellow gloomy exercise fan mid workout hopefully we will see him one morning for some Popeyes.

Thanks for the discipline and the opportunity to lead,

    RevSox

  • Keep It Simple Stupid

The Uptowner was greeted with 14 fiends this week itching to get their Friday fix. Although YHC had been voluntold to Q weeks ago, he slacked on working up a fancy workout with a cool theme, laminated weinkie, or pre-arranged cones. Therefore, back to basics for the PAX with 45 action packed minutes of good old-fashioned exercises and circuits, with hopes of leaving stronger than when we came. As the PAX rolled in, YHC gave the usual discalimer along with second disclaimer and warning that his sharpness as a playcaller may be hindered by the aftereffects of the evening beatdown and IPA fuelled F2 hours earlier. Here’s what went down:

Warmup: IPW, AC, WM, LS Squats, PP, Plank Roll, LC Crab, all various reps IC, followed by a Bear Crawl approx 40 yds to the rock pile.

The Thang: Countdown circuit with 4 exercises, all IC and same rep count, to be varied up along the way. These tend to be tough but the descending count provides some light at the end of the tunnel.

    • First round consisted of: Curls x15IC, Low Slow Squat w/rock x15IC, Shoulder Press x15IC, Mary/Rosalitas x15IC. Rinse and repeat x14, x13, x12, x11 all with varying Mary exercises at the end. YHC enlisted the help of the PAX to share the cadence duties.
    • Break for a bear crawl around our circle of rocks followed by a Alabama-cousin-marriage joke complemets of War Eagle.
    • Next round: Curls x10, Lateral Lunge x10, Shoulder Press x10, Dealer’s Choice Mary x10, rinse and repeat x9, x8, x7, x6.
    • Final round: Curls x5, Front Lunge w/rock overhead x5, Shoulder Press x5, Mary x5. Not much time left to keep working our way down so we had to cut it short and deposit the rocks.

Last 90 seconds included Hip Flexors and Plankorama.

COT to seal the deal. Welcome to our FNG who gace us lots of info on himeself but not much nickname material…hence the name Vanilla.

T-claps to the PAX for pitching in on the never ending cadence.

    Tool
