  • Good Friday

Good Friday.  I didn’t plan anything special.  I get a big fail for not including anything Good Friday related.  Mid-workout Sandbar had an idea for a Stations of the Cross workout!  I hope that happens next year.

A very cool 60 degrees – wet ground but no rain.

I brought back the CLassic Tinkles Blimps on the Avenue.  Here we did Burpees-Lunges-Imperial Walkers – Merks – Plank Jacks – Squats  – increasing by 5 at each intersection.  A very visible advertisement for F3 NOLA.

From the Avenue we rain straight to the top of Wolfpack Mtn.  Once I realized how wet it was up top – we came back down to the 6th floor which we used as a base.  Here we did SSH x 20, Mtn Climbers x 20.

From here – we ran down the stairs and up the far stairs.  Once back at the top we did  Dying Roach x 20, Dying Bug x 20.

Another LAP.  We did Peter Parkers, and Parker Peters.

Another LAP.  (3.5 total laps)  Back on the 6th floor we did Hip Dips x 12 each side, Bird Dogs x 20, and Monkey Humpers x 20.

After that 3rd lap we ran back down to the bottom – and did Merks around the clock.  Each pax grab a concrete barrier for cars, DO 10 Merks facing 12 o clcok, 10 merks facing 3 oclock, 10 merks facing 3 oclock hand on the concrete barrier for a staggered effect, 10 merks facing 6 oclock decline effect, and 10 merks facing 9 oclock .

A quick scramble over to the alley of benches.  Here we did 40 dips OYO.  Then we decline planked and waited for the 6.

Finally we hustled back to the FLAG for COT.  A Good Friday prayer .

Peace and See You in the Gloom.

Always a pleasure to lead.  Reluctant Yankee

  • Slow & Steady Up The Mountain

“It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” – Sir Edmund Percival Hillary

12 men were ready to go at 5:30. After a brief stop on the lush Loyola grass, 10 MCs & 10 MCMs, we headed to the base of the mountain:

Two Line Indian Run to the 3rd level – nice of El Wire, YSR & Yank to join us – followed by 10 MCM (3rd floor)

SSH Jumps up the mountain followed by 10 Burpees

Lunge Indian Run then 10 MCMs (4th floor)

Plank Broad Jumps then 10 Burpees

Slalom Al Gores then 10 MCMs (5th Floor)

Indian Run Bear Crawls while LBCing then 10 Burpees

Slalom Al Gores then 10 MCMs (6th Floor)

    Indian Run Backwards Crab Walks

Lastly after a quick peek at the skyline we finished with 10 Burpees (top floor)

2 minutes to spare, down the stairs and back to the flag

    Count-off, name-o-rama & some brief thanks

    Good times…

  • The bear went over the mountain

The PAX gathered at the AO in the refreshingly cool morning gloom, and as Brown Bag was not wearing a parka, YHC knew it must be just above 50 degrees.

Standard disclaimer and mosey around the track with a hard right turn across Magazine St, through the bollards and around much standing water to relative high ground in the oak alley.

    Warm up COP

5 burpees OYO , SSH x20 IC, Peter Parkers x20 IC, 5 burpees OYO, Sealjacks x20 IC, ParkerPeters x20 IC, 5 burpees OYO, Smurfjacks x20 IC, Mountain Climbers x20 IC, 5 burpees OYO, plankjacks x20IC

Mosey down magazine to the field in front of the zoo, which was looking like a lake. Much mumble chatter about puddles and wet shoes. We modified to the parking lot, using it as a large rectangle for cycling through BLIMPS at the corners. 5 Burpees, 10 lunges (2 legs is one), 15 Imperial Walkers, 20 merkins, 25 Plankjacks, 30 squats.

PAX then assembled in two lines for Indian run across the levy to the ‘fly.  One large pool of water disrupted the smooth flow of the indian run formation with PAX tacking starboard and port to avoid it, except for Sea Man, who would not be deterred by mere water and kept his line straight down the middle of it.

PAX assembled at the molehill at the end of the soccer fields.

We then bear crawled up over and down the other side of the mountain, to see what we could see.

On the other side we did 30 LBCs, then moseyed back around the mountain and reassembled.  Up and over the mountain again, but the second time we planked until all assembled, then Jack Webb 7s (merk followed by 2 air presses, to 7 merks) . Bear crawl back over the mountain to Jack Webb’s meaner brother, the Iron Hulk 6s. (merk followed by 4 air presses to 6 merks). Bear crawl back over the mountain.

4 trips over the mountain and we were out of time.

fast mosey back to the flag, COP, announcements and intentions.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  • The Other Mountain

Fun time in the gloom this morning with a great turnout.  Obviously inspired by Hawg’s presence, the PAX amped up the mumblechatter to near-Metry levels and kept it going throughout the workout.  After a quick disclaimer, we took the traditional stroll up and down the Avenue and set up in front of the Tulane sign for warmup (all IC):

    • SSHx25
    • IWx25
    • Merksx15
    • LSSx25

Short mosey to the Loyola music building for BLIMPS, starting with 10 burpees and increasing in increment of 5.   Hard run from there down Calhoun to Freret.  At mini-WPM, alternate sprint/jog up the parking deck, stopping at each level for a different exercise OYO until Q says halt (about 30-35 reps each):

    • Level 2: Mountain Climbers
    • Level 3: Plank Jacks
    • Level 4: Peter Parkers

At the top of MWPM, we partnered up for some core work.  Partner 1 ran down then up the stairs, while Partner 2 did the prescribed exercise, then flapjack:

    • V-Up
    • LBC
    • Russian Twists
    • Box cutters
    • LBT

Short on time, we hurried back to the flag for the count, name-o-rama, and prayer.

    -Mulligan

  • Uptown Buttercups

It was a lovely morning for 20 men to meet in the gloom to grow and improve themselves.  DISCLAIMER!  Let’s mosey… circle up in front of the Tulane sign:

    -SSH x 30 IC

    -IW x 30 IC

    -Mt Climbers x 30 IC

-Arm Circles x 30 IC (ea dir)

    -J-Lo’s x 20 IC

Let’s head to the bottom of the mountain.  Column of twos and Indian Run to the top.  It’s time to bring 11’s back…we just don’t do them anymore.  On your own, run to the bottom of the incline, do 10 crossfit merkins, run back up and do 1 WWII sit-ups…run back down and do 9 crossfit merkins, run back up for 2 WWII sit-ups, and keep going until reversed.  After a couple of the young studs finished and planked, the rest of us stopped where we were and headed down the mountain to the lawn in front of touchdown Jesus for some Mary.

Plank Challenge: Front plank 1 minute, Low plank 30 secs, low plank left leg up 30 secs, low plank right leg up 30 secs, left arm up plank 30 secs, right arm up plank 30 secs, low plank 30 secs, front plank 1 minute.

That was fun and we still have time for more Mary:

    -LBC x 20 IC

    -Flutter kicks x 20 IC

    -Hello Dolly’s x 20 IC

    -Wife Pleasers x 20 IC

Hurry up to the SF so we’re not late and RY chews us out….coutoff, namerama, announcements, shoutouts and a prayer.  Welcome FNG-Shanewego.   It was a pleasure to lead.  I look forward to the next time.

HEY UPTOWN!  SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP!!!

  • Credit Due!

Better late than never on the backblast but between the Friday before Mardi Gras and today I had to reconnect some neurons.  But it was said Friday when 11 strong kicked the weekend off right.  We were short some rolling Elvi, Muses groupies, and flambeau carriers but those that showed were rewarded with a beatdown.

Granted it had been a while since I q’d so naturally I forgot this disclaimer and promptly warmed up with 20 merkins IC.

Mosey to St. Charles and Walnut for BLIMPS on St. Charles (F3 PR). Brought us to in front of Holy Name.  Encountered some displaced (ie lost) Navy ROTC students looking for another Seaman but we had to disappoint.  We did point them in the right direction.

Mosey through Loyola to Tulane quad (plenty of Seaman here) (an ROTC breakfast perhaps) for some 4 corner abs. Russian twist x 30, LBCs x 30, LBT x 30, WW2 sit-ups x 20. Plank and wait in the center.

3 peak challenge commenced: Mosey to Yulman garage and Mosey to the peak on your own pace down the stairs.  Long Indian run down Calhoun to Loyola Rec garage.  Indian run to the top and Kong ran like he was being chased- he was – so the pace was aggressive. Down the stairs and Mosey to Wolfpack mountain.  Indian run to the top with a lot of heavy breathing.  Down the stairs and hustle to the flag!  3 minutes overdue but a good 4 mile run once it was all done!

Count off, name o rama, and intentions. Ball of man with prayers for a safe and fun Mardi Gras.

  • That’s Right, One More Time…

Pre Thang: YHC arrived a little early in case the rumors were true and it would be necessary to work out the logistics of dragging around a news crew, but alas they never showed up…  However, the pax seemed to never stop coming. At 05:30, after the disclaimer we moseyed out and around to the front of TU where the last of 23 pax joined us.

The Thang: Warmup COP– SSH, Mtn Climber, Imp Walker, Peter Parker x 25 and 10 Burpees OYO. Mosey to WPM.

BLIMPS to the top — Stop at each level : 5 Burpees, 10 Lunges each leg, 15 Imp Walkers, 20 Merkins, 25 Plank Jacks, 30 Squats. Plank and wait at the top. Mosey down the stairs. Since it was ground hog day, as an homage to the movie of the same name,  we did it all over again. #crowdpleaser At the top we did 6 minutes of Mary: RT, Hello Dolly, Real Freddie, Flutter Kick x 20, LBC x 25. Mosey back to the flag for COT w shoutout by YHC.

Welcome FNG’s I Love You Man and Medulla Oblongata!

    Good Times!

  • Merkin Madness and Frozen SeaMan

Bartman informed the Pax halfway through the gloom that frozen Seaman will last forever. True. Strange, but true. I’m not sure what question lead to this strange revelation, but true. So, anyway… YHC was a little nervous for my virgin Q at Wolfpack Mountain. Then I rolled in 1 minute late to a Pax of 16 men anxiously awaiting their beatdown in the gloom. Aye-yi-yi. Sorry to keep you waiting, my brothers.

But safety first! We made time for the usual disclaimer, and off we go. We made a slow-mosey loop down St. Charles Avenue to end at the beautiful lawn in front of Loyola. Even after the freeze, it’s still some of the best grass Uptown. Circle up for the first COP:

    SSH x 20 IC
    Imperial Walkers x 20 IC
Low slow squats x 20 IC
    Windmills x 10 IC
Arm Circles 10 forward, 10 backward IC
    Mountain Climbers x 20 IC

Next we mosey to the bottom of Wolfpack Mountain for Animals Up the Mountain. What better place for Animals on Parade than Wolfpack Mountain??? Well, this was met with several groans, and as it turns out, there may be better places for this than a parking garage. But we must press on!
We ran up the garage, and did animal walks at each end of each parking level.
    Floor 2: bear crawl
    Floor 3: crab crawl
Floor 4: plank walks (OK, OK, not an animal, but whatever)
    Floor 5: duck walks
    Floor 6: frog jumps

The top of Wolfpack Mountain is the best part of this location for YHC and many of the Pax. On this day, we will use this beautiful spot to alternate between Mary and Merkins. 2nd COP:

    Merkins x 10 IC
    Flutter kicks x 20 IC
    Left-arm staggered Merkins x 10 IC
    Hello Dolly x 20 IC
    Right-arm staggered Merkins x 10 IC
    Single-leg V-ups x 10 IC
    Left-leg cross-over Merkins x 10 IC
    Penguins x 20 IC
    Right-leg cross-over Merkins x 10 IC

Down the mountain we go to the park benches on the Quad. Everybody grab a bench.
    Left-leg Power-Ups x 20 IC
    Dips x 20 IC
    Right-leg Power-Ups x 20 IC
    Decline Merkins x 10 IC

Mosey back to the great lawn and partner up. One partner lunges across the lawn and back while the other partner holds a regular plank, left arm plank, and right arm plank. 2 sets, and we are out of time.

Run back to the flag. Count off, Name-o-rama (apologies to Sandbar for calling him the wrong name in my oxygen deprived sate), announcements, intentions, and a prayer. A shaky start and a shaky ending, but we got it done in the middle! Thank you for letting me lead!
