  • 5 has to be a record – from Russo

Simple and effective this morning. Much like my high school gym teachers, when YHC limits time spent on coming up with a plan, it devolves to “just run.”

Odds were Pelican would show, but much to YHC’s delight, the Splashpad was graced with 3 other HIM looking to brave the heat and move and shake: semi-regular Hammer, a semi-returning Akbar, fresh off either traversing the country (“What’s a traverse?”) or recuperating from said traverse, and a returning Splash Godfather Quarterpipe ™, who YHC can only assume has finally decided at around 80 degrees it’s not too cold to post.

    Warmup (all 10x IC)
    – Good mornings
    – Toe touches
    – Self love
    – Sealjacks
    – Imperial walkers
    – Cherry pickers
    – High knees

    Thang
Traverse to the tunnel, stopping every 60 seconds for 10 merkins and 10 squats.

    At the tunnel:

11s – donkey kicks and shoulder tap plank jacks

Mosey down, “sprint” through, mosey up.

Recovery walk/mosey back, where COT, Name-o-Rama, and prayer closed us out. Prayers for Steve’s mother-in-law, all our brothers hurting and healing, and that we’re strengthened with the Spirit to guide our day.

Tomorrow is Pickaxe’s birthday Q to celebrate his 12th trip around the sun.

Thank you to each of you for posting / reading. You all keep pushing me to be better and I’m grateful for it.

  • Recover – from Akbar

1 month since YHC’s last post. It was great to be back out in the gloom again despite the weather. Waterpik returned as well to the gloom to a heavy modified beatdown – meaning no upper body – running one of the regular routes down to the Lakefront wall, Rips, and back.

Nothing better to start the week than a run with Monday morning Mumblechatter.

Warm Up – SSH, IW, Grass Grabbers, Self Love, continuing warm up on the jog to the
Lakefront stopping for 20 Merkins and 20 Squats mixed in with other stuff.

Lakefront Wall: x20 IC – Freak Nasty, Dirkin, Squat, Step Ups, 1-2 sets

Lungewalk to Rips for 3 rounds of 1 exercise at the bottom, run the stairs, 1 exercise at the other side. Merkins, Squats, Rocky Balboa’s, Shoulder Taps, and something else.

This is when we saw a sea of cars heading toward the Lakefront. We have seen some strange things at the Marsh over the years, but this was something different. Turned out to be a FHS get together before the first day of school.

Head back to the Marsh, stopping again for 20x Merkins, Squats, and other stuff.

Returning to Moby Dick and Turbo Dog at the Marsh. Realizing with the short warm up, we missed Moby by a minute. He stayed and did 5, 10,, 15 reps on the pull up bars paired with squats and abs waiting upon our return.

Backward lunge walk to the other side of the court, front lunge walk to return.

Circle up for Mary of Little Manny Crunches, LBC’s, Hello Dolly, Rosalita, and time was called.

  • The M Beatdown – from Akbar

    Monday Morning
It was one of those days, starting out in the wee hours of the morning, sleepless, after a wonderful Father’s Day with the family. One part of Wonderful usually means overeating in some form or fashion, (pork nachos was the culprit) which kept YHC up all hours of the night. As we know, nothing usually goes to plan, and this gloom was no different.

    Muggy
Conditions, 82 degrees, muggy, not much different from last time, horsefly was still there

    Milestone Marsh
This is where the beatdown is held every Monday morning at 5:15am. If you ever want to come, we’d love to have you. Recently, the naming of the AO was explained that the first workout was a run to the Lakefront and back with exercises peppered throughout – which is
a mile. And, it is basically in a Marsh

    Motivation
As in, there was none. 5:15am, alone, where most of us have been at some point in time. It’s happened to me at least 4 times. After mentally battling myself, the lackadaisical mindset had settled in and the QIC would be in back in bed in 10 minutes.

    Moby
Until Moby showed up, and it was a go. With his sidekick Turbo Dog, there was no turning back.

    Missing
Waterpik had an excused absence, everyone else is unexcused. Was it Grundy’s beatdown Saturday? A Father’s Day Hangover? Juneteenth?

Make Ready – AKA Warm up
X10 IC, SSH, IW, Hillbillies, Grass Grabbers, Toe Touches, Windmills

    MARSOC Short Card
The planned beatdown. United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), basically the baddest of the bad, are formed straight from the Recon Marines. A beatdown with a mixture of bodyweight exercises, interspersed with calisthenics for a breather, Burpees, and a 4-mile run at the end. This is done for time. 10:13 (without the run) was the fastest YHC could find, we didn’t even think of coming close.

    Mosey
We took it slow, with a warm up run to the second mailbox to start off, and added a couple of more little runs in between. Nothing close to 4 miles.

    Modification
This would not be done straight for time, but more in a leisurely manner with Mumblechatter in between. This modification helped with the mugginess, but didn’t make it that much easier. All Burpees were deconstructed or modified in some form or fashion to our liking.

    Main Event
We headed to the playground for 30 Merkins, 30 Squats, 30 Crunches, 10 Burpees, and 10 Windmills. Then to the court for 30 Merkins, 30 Mountain Climbers, 30 Flutter Kicks, and 10 Burpees. Brief reprieve of 10 Cherry Pickers IC, then 30 Merkins, 30 Star Jumps, 30 Superman’s, 10 Burpees, and 10 Grass Grabbers (IC).

We then took another mosey to the first mailbox, swatted bugs, and finished up with 30 Merkins, 30 Lunges IC, 30 Hello Dollies IC, 10 Burpees, and a Max set of dead hang pull ups.

    Mary
Mindblank – but we did a couple of things.

    Mop Up
Counterama, Nameorama, and YCH closed us out in prayer.
Thanks for showing up Moby Dick, and saving me from the fartsack.

    SYITG – Akbar

    Moleskin and Mopeds

Great to have Moby and Turbo Dog out this morning. There were modifications, but we still did close to 400 reps and some light running.

As usual, we got a good start on fixing the worlds problems, mainly focusing on the Mandeville/Covington area. Improvements to infrastructure on Sharp Rd, 190, and other areas are in the works, which hopefully will help with bikers.

Will electric bikes become the new Mopeds? After the second World War, as Europe begin to rebuild, people needed cheap, reliable, forms of transportation. This could be the modern day Moped, an affordable solution to so many of those in our area who actually cannot afford a car.

  • The Fly – from Akbar

5 strong this gloom. The humidity registered at 86%, but it had to be a lie. The Horsefly gave us some trouble. It is said that they are fast, strong fliers that most often attack moving and dark objects, especially in wooded areas. They are most evident on hot, windless days. They require a blood meal before they can reproduce effectively. Their bite can be quite painful because their mouthparts are used for tearing and lapping. They are persistent and generally continue biting until they either succeed or are killed.

We were sitting ducks, and 1 Fly took on 5 grown sweaty men. Would it be weak to bring a fan to the beatdown as a prevention measure? It took some coordination to swat flies mid exercise, but we pushed forward, regardless.

PAX: Moby Dick, Hammer, Waterpik, Onion, Akbar, Turbo Dog

    Conditions: 79, 86% Humidity

Warm up – SSH, Grass Grabbers, Windmills, Self-Love, Arm Circles F/B, High Knees, Butt Kicks, Imperial Walker

    Mosey to the Trace bridge
25/25/25 Merkin, Squat, Abs – run bridge in between
    Repeato x 3

    Return to Playground, stopping at 2 corners for 25 Calf Raises, 25 LBC’s x 2 50/50 total

    Playground
2 sets of 10 pullups, 2 sets x10 of Deconstructed Burpees: Merkin IC, Groiner and Squat Jump OYO

Head to the picnic tables for Irkins and Bulgarian Split Squats x 10 IC, 2 sets. Then Freak Nasties x 10 IC and something else x 2 IC.

Full court Lt. Dan walk before Mary: 3 lunges, 1 squat, repeato

    Mary
Flutter kicks, Hello Dolly, Rosalita, Jane Fonda x10 IC
Hold Plank until time was called

  • Murph at the Marsh on Memorial Day – from Jose10k

It’s as simple as the title: we had a Murph at the Marsh on Memorial Day. You have to love the alliteration. 26 total showed up for the annual event. Hogsbreathe began with a history of the workout, his own personal experience, which we greatly appreciated. It was fun watching Zoo’s face as each car pulled up. He so graciously offered up his beautiful outdoor kitchen for breakfast afterwards. A huge shout out to his wife for helping prepare breakfast for a bunch of smelly men. Warm-up followed by the murph. COT, 2 FNG’s, (welcome Pole Dancer and Flex Seal), followed by Hammer praying us out. Thank you all for posting and the fellowship as always. Happy Birthday Pick!

  • Efficiency – from Akbar

YHC has been working with Whacker helping cut yards for the past month. One thing that I’ve learned is the efficiency in which he works. Active, productive, profitable, skillful, decisive, effective, valuable, proficient, organized. It’s not like when we cut our own yard: chilling to tunes, stopping to talk with the neighbors, maybe looking forward to a cold beer afterward. This is an operation to get finished as soon as possible.

For example, tight and wide. You cut the smaller spaces first toward the street, then the larger ones working back toward the house – this makes clean up more efficient. Don’t cut other people’s grass, even it’s a patch of grass the size of a shoe box. If you do, you’ll get yelled at by a screaming man running toward you with a weed eater. Snake mow only when the grass is shorter, box cut when it’s growing to make clean up more efficient. Mow the edges of the yard first, watch out for protruding or non-protruding items in the yard (stumps, toys, power lines). Don’t wear dark sunglasses.

Drive fast in between jobs – rolling stops are permissible at stop signs. Blow grass with the wind. Eat something, drink lots of water, and don’t use the bathroom until the jobs are finished.

In pondering these recent adventures, efficiency was on the mind. What kind of beatdown covers all the bases without being too complicated? 7’s and 11’s

PAX: Akbar, Wicket, Jose 10k, Hogsbreath, Zoolander, Russo, Minnow, Maverick, Bird, Grover, Hammer, JV, Trucoat, Waterpik, Sogo, Brexit

    Warm up x10-20 IC:
SSH, Mountain Climbers, Mummy Kicks, Grass Grabbers, Windmills, other stuff

    Thang:
Mosey up and down the Lakefront, stopping for 7’s, then 11’s, rinse and repeat. All exercises started on the wall, with a 60 foot mosey to the sidewalk to perform exercise #2, then a mosey back.

7’s Dirkin, Army Crawl, Mountain Climber
11’s Freak Nasty, flying nun (lunge walk with arm circles), Twinkle Toes (Al Gore calf raise)
7’s Wall Jumps, Bear Crawl, Hand Release Merkins
11’s Stone Mountain, High Knees, Renegade Row

    7:19 am, Lightning round
    7’s Bouncy Squats, run, Superman’s
11’s Al Gore Shoulder Clap, run, Scuba Steve’s

Indian run back to the flag for Mary

    • Great to have Brexit join us again
    • One thing YHC loves about 7’s and 11’s is the Mumblechatter. There was a whole group on the far side that quoted movie lines pretty much the whole workout. Gives you a chance to catch up with everybody, like switching conversations on a speed date, but you aren’t trying to date the other dude.

Thanks for following my lead. SYITG – Akbar

  • Flicker Ball 2023 Installment – from Zoolander

15 proved fit for the 2nd flicker ball installment in 3 years on the North Shore. The game warm-up included two rounds of a lung-busting core medley (mountain climbers, V-ups, supermans, squats with jumps, and side-touches) and some soccer ball Merkins. Teams were arranged based on age with Wicket and Barely Legal captaining a Juniors versus Seniors match-up. The game went back-and-forth, needed instant replay at one point to dispel a goal debate as heated as Crystal or Tobasco, and even a flawless Scissors Move was sighted within the Junior’s ranks (Zoolander). Fancy moves were no match for Akbar and the Senior’s stiff defense. In the end, Dangerfield’s Zioned shoe was all it took to unleash his barefoot speed with Senior ace’s Bird and Waterpik on his flanks. The Senior’s long-range shooting, including Jose 10k’s Steph Curry range peppering, bested Cowbell’s golden cleats and the Junior’s fancy playmaking, leaving the Juniors bent over gasping for air and petitioning for a re-match. The work-out ended with the introduction and naming of the newest member of F3 North Shore, “Brexit.”

  • Rock & Roll with Upchuck – from Akbar

7 PAX this morning on a rainy day, we welcomed Upchuck downrange from Birmingham to our gloom. On the pain menu for today was a Thor inspired, IronPaxish beatdown with compound exercises and a run up the stairs in between for a short reprieve of the impending doom.

Conditions: 73 degrees with light to steady rain

PAX: Akbar, Bushwhacker, Einstein, Dark Wing Duck, Fletch, Moby Dick, Upchuck (Birmingham)

Warm Up: SSH, Grass Grabbers, Arm Circles, Self-Love, High Knees, Butt Kicks

Mosey to the rock garden, pick a rock, and roll to the Courthouse

Thang: Pick your rock carefully, do all 5 exercises x 10 reps each, run up the stairs for 15 calf raises, rinse and repeat. 5 rounds = 250 reps

    1. Blockee Curl Press
    2. Squat Curl Press
    3. Alternating Reverse Lunge Curl
    4. Curls
    5. Standing Shoulder Press

Most of us got 5 rounds in, the rain was welcomed as it cooled us off.

    Mary
LBC and Little Manny Crunches x 20 IC

Count, name, and YHC prayed us out with thanks for Upchucks visit and safe travels home, the opportunity for us to do this crazy stuff each week, and the bond that builds because of it. And for people to sign up to Q. Amen!

Thanks for pushing me guys. SYITG- Akbar

    NMM
The original workout is done with dumbbells with a 60s rest in-between sets. Much more manageable than a rock, even cinderblocks would be better. YHC gave the disclaimer to pick your rock carefully, and YHC did not. It was oblong and pointy, which made it hard to hold onto, but added a degree of difficulty. Heaving breathing ensued, with short bits of rest to gain composure.

There are curls in 4 of the exercises, shoulder work in 4 as well. Adding up to almost 40 reps of each per round. We’ll feel that tomorrow

Of course, Whacker overperformed, seemingly breathless, talking the whole time as usual, with comments reminding YHC he had shoulder surgery recently – but didn’t seem to phase him.

Einstein was not far behind, smiling the whole time. It amazes me how resilient and strong these old guys are, and I am officially an old guy too. But they’ve got 10+ years on me – amazing.
