  • City Park History Beatdown Part II

Eleven men came out to get fit and test the limits of our middle aged chassis.  Due to popular demand, another City Park history lesson was in store.  Each stop on the tour included the history behind different structures built in the park while using their significant dates for the rep count.

    The Warmup:

Quick mosey looping around the Great Lawn and back to the Peristyle.

Peristyle was built in 1907 so we started with 19 SSH and 7 Windmills all IC.  The Goldring/Woldenberg Great Lawn was dedicated in 2010 therefore we did 20 Hill Billies IC and 10 Burpees OYO.

Short mosey to the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden (Built in 2003) and lined up on the ledge for 20 Inclined Merkins IC and 3 Box Jumps, all will dodging the wine cups and debris from the previous night’s shindig.

    The Thang:

Mosey to oval pond in front of the museum which was originally built in 1911 as The Isaac Delgado Museum of Art.  That prompted us to do 19 Left Leg Step Ups and 11 Dips all IC.  YHC informed the PAX the in 1971 the name was changed to The New Orleans Museum of Art so we did 19 Right Leg Step Ups then lined up on the front step for 71 Toe Taps followed by a run up and down the stairs.

Mosey down the running path around the Big Lake and detour for some Mary.  The area was reconstructed and dedicated in 2009 so we proceeded with 20 Hello Dollys and 9 Pickle Pounders IC.  YHC then informed the PAX the the City Park Big Bass Rodeo started in 1946 and is the oldest freshwater fishing contest in the country.  That led us to knock out 19 Russian Twists and 23 LBC IC (46 total).  Then proceeded with an half mile Indian Run around the rest of the Big Lake track.

After planking and re-hydrating at the water fountain, quick mosey to the foundry on Roosevelt Mall. The workout included 5 stations with remaining PAX planking.  Working in a clockwise motion, alternating upper body and lower body, we knocked out:  10 Pull Ups, 10 Squats, 10 Dips, 10 Toe Taps, 5 Monkey Bar Pull Ups, and Planking.

Mosey to the beginning of Roosevelt Mall to discuss the many structures built the the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in the 1930’s which included Tad Gormely Stadium along many bridges, benches, sidewalks, etc in the park,  President FDR came to City Park in 1937 to dedicate the stadium and along with the oak tree lined street near the stadium that bears his name.  Therefore we created a new exercise called The 1937 which included pairing up and running down the sidewalk of Roosevelt Mall and stopping at a designated bench to knock out 19 Inclined Merkins while the other person pounded out Burpees.  Run the to the end and plank at the water fountain.  Repeated on the other side of Roosevelt Mall with 37 LBTs while the other person does Squats (originally I planned to do IPW but was woosy at this point.  This routine could be modified for future workouts to include an array of exercises.)  After running to the end near the foundry, there was just enough time left for the PAX to knock out 10 more Pull Ups each.  Mosey back to the flag.  Total running distance was right under 3 miles.

Circled up at the flag and prayed for those with major life changes (Rev and Yuengling) along with those of the PAX that are injured.

    Thanks for letting me lead.

  • 610 Stomp #4 – BBQ&Brew Burnoff

Five men came out for a post-Labor Day 4.5 mile run/walk/burpee fest.  Modified in the first minute with a sudden change to accommodate one of the PAX pulling in hot.  Once the crew got back on track, several of the PAX agreed this run may be tuff given the amount of BBQ’d meat and brew indulged on the day before.  Stayed on course with the usual route, running for 6 minutes, then burpee and/or walk for one minute.  Rinse and repeat till done.  The usual, lone Indy 500 driver in the silver 4-Runner graced us with a fly-by again on Filmore.  Luckily the keen senses and ultra quick reflexes of the PAX have been able to avoid being a speed bump by this guy.  Two groups finished the run a minute or two apart with approx a 10 min per mile pace.

It was YHC’s bday so the COT included giving thanks for another year of health, strength, and the will to get up in the am to make ourselves better.  Asked the big guy upstairs to give us many more bdays and F3 workouts.

  • City Park & Bayou St. John Landmark Tour

Eleven PAX came out this am for a sweat filled fix.  T-claps to the two FNGs.  YHC planned a bit of a different theme to the workout by incorporating historical landmarks and significant dates of each to determine rep counts for each exercise.

    The Warmup:

Quick mosey to Popp Grandstand (built 1917) near the Casino Building (built 1912). All IC:  SSHx19, Merkinsx17, IPWx19, Smurf Jacksx12

Mosey across the bridge (Bayou Metairie) to the Allard Plantation Sign.  The 100 acre plantation was the original park which was proclaimed a public park in 1854.  All IC: Squat Jump Turnx18, Arm Circles x54 (27forward, 27reverse)

    The Thang:

Mosey to the banks of Bayou St. John which was given that name in 1803.  This called for 18 burpees OYO and 3 Chuck Norris Merkins IC.  Sweat was dripping at this point.

Mosey to the Magnolia Bridge which was built in 1897.  Lined up for 97 touch touches OYO, run across the bridge to complete 18 dips, run back and plank.  Rinse and repeat.

Quick mosey to The Pitot House on BSJ built circa 1800.  This called for 18 burpees.

Mosey along the bayou back to City Park.  Lined up along the Great Lake track and proceed with an Indian Run to the water fountain.  Bumped into two prospective FNGs jogging that plan to come out next week.  T-claps to Amnesty for recruiting hard.

Mosey to the new foundry near the festival grounds pavilion.  Actually built as a youth outdoor gym and music spot but the coast was clear so we proceeded by pairing up to complete two rounds of 5 exercises:  peek-a-boo pull-ups, dips, incline merkins, climp up and down the rope tower, and running around the two building which was our timer.  YHC may have botched this up a bit but sweat was still flowing.  There may have been some decline planks in the mix.

Mosey to the water fountain and over to the back of Christian Brothers School for some Mary. Originally built in 1919 as the McFadden Mansion, then the mayor’s mansion, then the school.  Nineteen was our number so we knocked out IC: Hello Dollyx19, Pickle Poundersx19.  The next significant date was 1989, the year the YHC graduated from 7th grade at that school.  We finished off I.C. with:  Flutter kicksx19, LBCx45(89+1 for lagniappe).

Mosey back to the flag.  Name-o-rama for the new guys and the usual announcements.  Talked about striving to be better men and also striving to make a positive impact in someone else’s life.  Prayed for those with sickness, special needs, and major life events on the radar.

It was a good way to start the day.  Thanks for letting me lead.

  • Easy Like Friday Morning

    Pre-Thang:

Nine men came out in the steamy gloom to get their sweat on.  This was YHC’s first full Q.

    The Thang:

    IC:  SSH x 25, Arm Circles x 15 x 2, Squat Jump Turn x 15, IPW x 15, Smurf Jacks (SSH in squat position) x 15

Quick Mosey to Touchdown Jesus lawn and split in two alternating groups.  First Round:  group 1 Bear Crawl to statue, sprint back while group 2 does Burp and Merks (Burpees w/increasing pushups).  Second Round:  Lunge Walk to statue, sprint back  – burp and merk.  Third Round:  Backpedal around statue, sprint – burp and merk.  (looking back, round three would have been better suited with another bear crawl)

Mosey to garage, backpedal and sprint first ramp with a pitstop at the top of each incline to knock out LBC x 15.  Plank at the top to wait for the #6.

    IC:  Hello Dolly x 15, Russian Twist x 15, Flutter Kick x 15, LBT x 15, Superman x 10, Rosalitas x 10

Mosey at your own pace back to the flag.

Circle of Trust included Spillway Classic announcement along with the usual rundown of who’s Q’ing upcoming workouts.  YHC thanked the PAX for pushing him through three good months of F3,  resulting in 15lbs shed and much better shape than just running alone.  Prayer shout outs to the victims of the Tennessee shootings and to the Big Man above for giving us the health and will to do these workouts and become better men.

Thanks for letting me lead.  I will strive for more of a beat down and “bullshits” on any future Q’s.
